Chapter Sixty Six
It was after another long car ride on day four that Harry and Evee arrived near the Bokong mountains. Harry had informed her they would be staying at Katse Lodge. Just when the nurse didn't think Africa could get more beautiful, she was mistaken when she met Lesotho's highlands. They had their own cottage with a little kitchen, living area and a gorgeous view over the Bokong mountains along with the lake in the middle. They even had their own little deck. "Jesus Christ, Harry, this is beautiful." Evee mumbled, stepping outside to admire the view.
She felt him wrap his hands around her neck from behind and the only things she could hear was the nature surrounding them and his slow breath against her ear. "Do you like it?"
"Like it? Can we just stay here forever?" She mumbled as he pressed his lips against her neck.
"Life would be quite amazing here, wouldn't it?"
"It definitely would be." Evee spoke, enjoying his chest pressed against her back. She could smell his cologne and feel the stubble of his beard against her cheek.
"I'm thinking about having a lazy day today and maybe we can hike through Bokong's Nature Reserve tomorrow. It's 60 kilometres from here."
"That sounds wonderful." The blonde turned around, facing Harry. He was still wearing his Ray Ban's. "Thank you for sharing this with me. I know how much Lesotho means to you."
"I wouldn't dare sharing it with someone else." He replied, wrapping his arm around her neck.
"I love you." Evee smiled, lifting her head to close the gap between them. Her hand pressed firmly against his cheeks, she eagerly kissed him. "I love you so much."
She could feel him smile against her lips, "I love you too."
The kiss quickly got heated and they managed to find their way towards the bedroom. It didn't take long for them to strip down to their bones and make love until the sun set. When the sky finally turned black and filled itself with stars, they sat in one of the loveseats outside, sharing a blanket and sipping from a glass of wine.
Evee could hear the sounds of animals howling in the background, carefuly lifting her head to look up at Harry, she noticed he was in deep thought. "What are you thinking?" She quietly questioned, not wanting to interrupt their moment.
"Just how much things have changed the last year." He replied, adverting his eyes towards the beauty laying in his lap. He carefully ran his fingers through her hair. "How fortunate I was to meet you."
She couldn't help but stare through the darkness into his blue eyes. Tonight was perfect actually. The weather wasn't too cold, the stars were shining. Every once and a while she could even spot a fallen star. Her head was laying down in the lap of the man she loved. There wasn't a place she would have rather been. "I think I was the fortunate one." She smiled. "You've changed me. In more ways than I could possibly imagine. I like the way I am when I'm with you."
His eyes never left hers, "Yeah?"
"I used to go out a lot, drink a lot. Apart from the hospital I didn't really have a purpose in life. You've changed that for me." She confessed, spilling her heart out. "These past days... This past year actually... It has been the best one of my life. You make me really happy."
He tried to swallow the lump in his throat. It was really everything he wanted to hear. He was going to do it tomorrow, on the hike. He wanted to have a good background, a beautiful one to represent everything she meant to him. He had a good speech, he had practiced it for days. But in this moment, he realized he didn't need all these things. He didn't need the waterfall in the background, he didn't need his speech. Staring into her green eyes was more than enough. The stars and her would be the only things witnessing the most important event in his life and it was more than enough for him.
Evee felt him move underneath him, confused she looked up, she was so comfortable in his lap. "Harry, what are you doing?"
"I wanted to do this tomorrow- but, tonight... Tonight's so perfect."
Evee thought everything went in slow motion and time stood still. She watched how his hand made their way towards the inside of his jacket. When she finally noticed his fingers wrap around a small black box, her thoughts finally hit home.
This was actually happening.
She hadn't thought of it for the past days, she had so much fun that her mind actually slipped from it. How was it possible that she forgot about his plans? She had lost nights of sleep because of it at home.
Harry tried to catch his breath, ignoring the painful lump in his throat. He watched as her eyes adverted from the little box to his own. Her mouth widened and he could swear that he saw her eyes watering up already. He shrugged, hoping that he would still have the voice to speak. His knees shook as he slowly crunched down on one knee. "The moment I laid eyes on you, I knew you were perfect. I knew I wanted to get to know you. For some reason, I was drawn to you and your silly escapades. I had everything written down what I was going to say, I wanted this to be perfect.-"
Evee watched through her own tears how Harry's eyes turned bloodshot red. She knew he was holding back himself. "Turns out I don't need the perfect location nor the perfect words, I just need you and the stars."
She couldn't help but chuckle, wiping her tears as she stared at the man on one knee in front of her. "I love you. You make me smile. You make me want to be a better person. You make me look forward to the next day."
Realizing those were the exact same words she had spoken to Chloe when she described him, took her back a little. They made each other look forward to the next day. To the future.
"This past year has also been the best year of my life, Evee. I can't imagine being with anyone else but you. I don't want anyone else but you. I want to wake up next to you for the rest of my life. I want to hear you moan on plane rides for the rest of my life. I want to bicker about jars of Ben and Jerry's for the rest of my life." His trembling fingers opened the little box, revealing one of the most stunning rings Evee had ever placed her eyes on. "Eveline Paula Leonie Delamane, will you please marry me?"
Evee watched him nervously biting his lip as she felt her heart beat in her throat. She could feel her own tears rolling down her face. She carefully nodded her head, a grin spreading on her features. "Yes, I'll marry you Eddy."
And for once, she didn't have a doubt in her mind when she saw the biggest grin she had ever seen form on Harry's face. For a moment she thought her legs were going to give out when she stood up and tackled him, wrapping her arms around his neck. A sob escaped her lips when she felt him pull her against his own body with all of his strength. "I love you so much." He mumbled against her hair.
"I love you too, god I'm such a crybaby." She sniffed once again.
"I don't care." He whispered, pulling back his head to look her into the eyes. "Fiancée of mine."
"Come here." She wrapped her hand around his neck, pulling his lips against hers forcefully. When they finally managed to break apart, Evee had the biggest smile.
"The ring! You haven't even seen the ring properly. Let me put that on your finger." Harry beamed.
"Okay." She sniffed once again, pulling out her left hand. "Harry... This is... This ring... Jesus... Do... Do we have insurance? It's so big." She was lost for words. It was really the most beautiful piece of jewelry she had ever seen.
Harry chuckled and when his fingers finally managed to put all three pieces of the ring around her fingers, he sighed. "I'm so glad it fits."
She didn't dare to ask Harry how much it cost. "There's three of them." She stated.
"You can combine. The two outer parts have yours and mine name engraved in them. I thought it fit you. For press, you can actually take them off to have more of a clean cut." Harry spoke, still trying to wrap his mind around the fact that he was now engaged. The beautiful woman in front of him had agreed to be his for her entire life.
"I love it. I love it so much. God it's gorgeous." She stared at it, holding out her hand to look at it from a far.
"You're gorgeous." Harry replied. God, how did he manage to get this lucky?
Looking up at the stars for a moment, Harry couldn't help but mumble a silent thank you. He knew someone was staring down at him with a smile upon her face.
