Chapter Sixty One
Harry knew Evee had to work the whole day but couldn't help and be nervous. What if she surprised him at his home? What if she got off early or they called her in the morning that she didn't have to work at all? He knew today was probably one of the most important days of his life. He was going to pick an engagement ring for his future wife. He couldn't ignore his sweaty palms, he had been rubbing them over his pants for the last hour.
This ring would be so important. It would be in all the newspapers, they would analyze it but more importantly Evee had to like it. He knew her style, he knew her flaws. He had a ring envisioned in his mind.
When he finally saw a man in a tuxedo, carrying a big black suitcase in front of his door with three security men, he had to swallow. "Are they here yet?" He heard his sister in law shout from the living room.
"They're here." He took a deep breath and opened the door. "Mister Collins, it's a pleasure to see you."
The grey haired man bowed his head, "Your Royal Highness, I am very fortunate that we could meet under these circumstances."
Harry couldn't help but smile as he stepped aside, letting the four men into his home, "It had to happen one day."
"We are very honored that the tradition of house Garrard will be continued in the family."
The prince nodded his head, "I wouldn't have it any other way. It was my mother's favourite after all." He closed the door behind them, instigated that they could follow him into the dining room. "You've probably met my sister in law, Catherine."
"Your Royal Highness, it's a pleasure to see you once again." The older man carefuly eyed the ring that the public had named the Commoner's Saphire on the duchess her finger. "The ring looks remarkable on you."
"Thank you, mister Collins." Kate smiled, carefuly touching her own engagement ring.
"And this is Chloe Jameson, my future fiancée's best friend. They're both here to help me out a little bit." Harry smiled, ignoring the empty feeling in his gut. If his mother was still alive, she would have been here. He knew she would have. She would have loved this.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Jameson." Kate giggled at Chloe's facial expression. She knew the girl was too excited and honored at the same time. It was the first time Chloe was in Nottingham Cottage and already she was picking out the engagement ring for a prince. The fact that that prince was actually going to propose to her best friend kept her up for days. There would be a royal wedding. She would be in it. Eveline was going to marry a god damn prince.
Her rascal, good hearted friend would be a duchess.
Chloe had always envisioned Evee marrying a rockstar. Not a prince.
But god, she was excited.
"Let's get to it, shall we?" The friendly man spoke, carefully placing the suitcase on the dining table. Harry placed himself next to mister Collins, Kate and Chloe on either side of them.
Chloe's eyes nearly bulged out of her head when she saw the diamonds inside. She had never seen anything so beautiful. "Are we thinking custom made, sir?"
Harry immediately nodded his head, "Yes, I have something envisioned in my head. I want something that fits her. Something sweet but still fun and quirky."
Kate didn't really understand how a ring could be quirky but didn't interrupt Harry, he seemed too invested in the rings and diamonds that she didn't have the heart to even slightly giggle at him. She knew how important this was. She watched how Chloe took a big gulp of her wine and had to hold back a smile, she could see how this was one of Evee's close friends. Even though they probably would never admit it, the two were quite alike with their antics.
Harry watched when the man took out a professional looking paper notebook and some pencils. "Tell me about the love of your life then." The man smiled kindly.
"Well, she's not easy to summarize." Harry laughed, looking at Chloe, who totally agreed with him, nodding her head.
"Well that says a lot as well."
Harry didn't want him to miscomprehend his words. "Not that she's a difficult person."
"Let me ask you another question, why do you want to marry her?"
"She makes me want to be a better person. She's always smiling."
"-When she's around you that is." Chloe mumbled in the background, remembering the multiple times her best friend had hung up on her when she had a hangover in the past. She did have to admit that the last time that happened had been a long time ago. Taking a moment or two, the petite brunette realized how much her friend had changed in a positive way by being with Harry.
Harry had to laugh, "Yeah, she always smiles when she's around me. That's true. She's just an overall good person, you know. Always wanting to make other people happy, very kind. A good heart. A good sense of humor, she's always making me laugh."
Kate couldn't help but grin at her brother in law. Even she thought he was cute right now. She didn't think she had ever seen the man so infatuated with another person. "She also a little bit of a nerd, even though she doesn't want to admit it. Always reading and listening to music. A creative soul." He nodded his head at the man. "She likes the simple things in life, but then again, she's not simple herself. Am I actually making any sense?" Harry looked at the two woman around the table.
"No Harry, you've managed to describe her quite well. I can relate to the words." Chloe smiled sweetly at the ginger.
"But then again, she's quite a classic beauty, judging from the pictures I've seen of her."
"Yes, she is, but she had a little edge to it, doesn't she Harry?" Kate smiled, looking at her brother in law.
He nodded his head, "Definitely. Another one of her is quite hard to find."
"That my friend, I can agree on. " Chloe grinned. "There are unquestionably no two Evee's."
"Unique then." Mister Collins smiled. "A classic but with an edge. I'm sure we'll find something perfect."
"I surely hope so." Harry replied, already feeling nervous by just looking at all these different diamonds.
"There are four important C's when picking out a ring. Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight. Let's just start with the cut. As you can see we have different cuts, we have round ones, square ones, oval ones, everything you can imagine can happen."
"Kate, yours is an oval one, right? I like that one. I kind of want it to be similar to my mom's engagement ring, now yours Kate, but then again I don't want it too much, you know? Just a slight nod." Harry couldn't help but think how difficult he was being and he didn't want to copy Kate's ring either but he did want something of his mom in there.
Kate didn't seem annoyed at all, she could understand where he was coming from. The ring on her finger was actually Harry's first. He had given it to William when he told his brother he'd ask Kate for her hand. Who was she to tell Harry what or what not he could choose from? "Okay, we'll start with an oval one. Now the metal type, there are quite a few to pick from as well."
The three stared at the different types, the man wasn't kidding when he said there was a lot of choice. "What does she usually wear? Silver or gold?"
"She doesn't really wear a lot of rings, actually." Harry mumbled, already struggling.
"We can't wear rings on the job, that's why." Chloe explained, looking at the older man. "Harry, what about the rose one? I think she would actually really like that. It's different and soft, just like her."
"This metal type is Rose Gold, it's a 14K. We can actually pick a diamond that fits it perfectly." Harry nodded his head, watching how the man opened a black box. Inside there was a huge diamond, it wasn't white but then again, it wasn't pink either. It fit perfectly together.
"Oh! I love that Harry!" Kate stared at the band and the diamond.
"The main stone is a natural morganite. Morganite's subtle color is caused by traces of manganese. Because morganite has distinct pleochroism -pale pink and a deeper bluish pink-it's necessary to orient the rough carefully for fashioning." Mister Collins explained.
"This would actually really fit her. Not that we want to make the decision for you." Chloe rambled, still staring at the beauty in front of her.
"The diamond of course isn't polished and cut yet, the end result would be even better. This one would be an eleven for carat weight."
"This is great. Yes, let's start from these two. I love that." Harry grinned, still staring at the band and the huge stone in front of him. Chloe tried not to widen her eyes when she heard the ring would have eleven carats.
"This diamond has been in my case for quite some time. I only take it out for special occasions. I guess this is one of them. We make it up to an Sl 1 clarity. It would be perfection. " The jeweler spoke. "Let me just draw up the things we've got already and we'll go from there."
When he finally finished the drawing of a simple oval, light pink diamond and the rose band, he looked up. "Right, this is what we've got already. Most rings have accent stones, like the one the duchess has. They're the little stones around the main diamond. You can get them in different colours as well but I would honestly just keep them white. You don't want the attention off the main diamond. Plus it fits the rose. We can actually engrave them into the band aswell. Let me show what that would look like. It's a halo setting. " He added the stones around the ring and into the band.
"Holy crap, Harry." Chloe's eyes widened. She couldn't believe she just cursed in front of Kate Middleton "Sorry about that."
"No, it's fine. I know what you mean. This is gorgeous, Harry." Kate spoke, staring at the drawing.
"That's perfect. I knew I made the right decision calling you." Harry grinned, looking at the perfect drawing of the ring. That man was an artist.
"It's going to be so beautiful." Chloe sighed.
"This is quite clean cut though. It would be perfect for the press but you can actually personalize it as well. If you add 2 diamond bezel half eternity rings to it, it gives you an entire different look. It's a little more vintage now." The man took an oval ring out of the box and added more complicated rings to it. One above and one underneath.
"Just when I thought it couldn't get more beautiful." Evee's best friend stared at it with her mouth wide open. "I know this will cost you a lot of money, Harry, but this screams Evee to me."
"Money's not the issue, Chlo." Chloe couldn't help but stare at the prince. He used Evee's nickname for her and he said that money wasn't the issue.
"You can customize these as well. I would never recommend to engrave something in an engagement ring but it would be perfect to do in these eternity rings. If one of them is missing, it doesn't fit. See? The picture is more beautiful when they're both there." Mister Collins smiled. "One of them can have your name on it, the other hers."
"That is so romantic, Harry." Kate stared at his brother in law.
"You do have a way of selling these things, don't you?" Harry laughed at the older man.
"Just trying to find something perfect that matches your description of your future wife, sir. Let me add these to the drawing and then we can see, alright?"
"Yes, add it to the drawing!" Chloe squealed, not being able to hold her enthusiasm.
Kate laughed at the brunette, "I bet you were glad it was your off day at work, right?"
"What are you talking about? I called in sick for this. There is no way I would miss this." She grinned, taking a sip of her wine. "Evee called me an hour ago. She was concerned. I'm quite sure I could be the next Jennifer Aniston with that little show I did on the phone."
"Make sure you're home when she's off, she'll be there with chicken soup." Harry replied, holding back a smile.
"Oh I know, I've already strategically placed tissues all over my apartment. I'm prepared." Kate laughed, shaking her head.
"Picture wise, this would be the end result." Mister Collins finally spoke, putting the pencils down and showcasing his design.
"That's... Very Evee. It's gorgeous." Harry grinned, carefully running his eyes over the drawing. He heard a sniffle in the background, turning his head he could see his sister in law and Chloe both red eyed. "Are you guys crying?"
"I'm not even sorry." Chloe rapidly spoke, taking two tissues out of her purse and handing one to Kate.
Harry shook his head, a grin still formed on his face. It was hard not to get caught up in this as well, he had always been an emotional man. Mister Collins smiled, "Do you like it?"
"It's breathtaking."
"Just like your future wife."
"Yes, just like my future wife." He spoke, ignoring another quiet cry from Chloe in the background.
