Chapter Sixty Nine
The next morning Evee drove towards the hospital in her little Vauxhall. The fact that it probably would be her last drive from her own apartment towards the hospital didn't make it easier. Thankfully, she didn't cry but it seemed as if every time she changed the radio station, another emotional song came on. When Taylor Swift decided to join her with 'Everything Has Changed', she just cursed and turned it off.
She quickly badged herself into the hospital parking, making sure there were no cameras when she stuck out her left hand to do so. She should've just left the ring at home, it was ridiculous. Finally finding a close parking spot, she took the big envelope which contained the resigning papers and her purse along with her.
Keeping her eyes down and her left hand in her jeans pocket, she took the stairs towards her department. She knew today would be the last day she'd walk this route. For a moment she tried to remember the day she met Harry. She knew these were the exact same stairs she hurried herself upon more than a year ago. She was already running late then. Instead of a big rock on her finger, she had a massive bruised left eye and a hangover.
Pushing the same white doors, she entered the hallway. A few colleagues were surprised to see her, Evee was supposed to be on her annual leave, not here. She nodded and smiled at them. "Tracy, hi, do you know where I can find Janice?" The nurse asked the middle-aged brunette.
"Hi Evee! Stunned to see you here. She's in her office."
"Thanks." Not spotting Chloe anywhere, the blonde dragged her feet towards Janice's office, gently knocking on the door.
"Come in." She heard the red head speak from behind the door.
Gently pushing it open, she saw her head nurse sitting behind her usual desk. The same chair, in which Evee scolded Janice last year in when she told her she had to go to that polo match, was still placed in front of it. "Eveline! What a surprise!" The redhead immediately wore a frown and a slight smile on her face.
"Janice, sorry about coming by unannounced."
"It's fine, it's fine." She waved Evee's comment away with her hand. "Sit." The blonde immediately followed the older nurse's instructions. "To what do I owe this pleasure?"
For a moment, Evee was a little lost for words. She was going to tell the nurse that she was engaged, meaning that she couldn't come to work anymore and had to resign. Resign on a place that was already understaffed. A little frightened that Janice might not take this well, she carefully placed her left hand on the desk.
Janice eyes immediately adverted towards the big shiny rock on Evee's left ring finger. "Is that-" She couldn't even say it. The last person she thought to ever get engaged in her team was Evee. Janice never thought she would be the one settling down so quickly. She knew the blonde was good with kids, remarkable even, but Janice always thought that was because Eveline was still very much a kid herself. She had always seen her as the rebelled, young one in the family. Because in some sort of way, the team was family.
They had to treat each other like family to survive in this working area.
"Harry has asked me to marry him in Africa and I said yes." She tried to speak in one fluent sentence, hoping she didn't stumble upon her words. Eveline had always respected Janice, she had always looked up to her as a second mother at work.
The head nurse her mouth opened in an O as she still stared at the beautiful rock on her employee's finger. "Oh, wow- I don't- I'm a little loss for words. Wow."
"It's fin-" Evee tried to understand but was interrupted by Janice.
"No, no, congratulations. Jezus, Eveline. I can't believe it." The blonde had never seen her head nurse in this state. She was always the calm and collected one. Even a little cold at times.
"Thank you." She smiled. "I wanted to do this before it leaks out in the press."
"The press... Right. Right. You're marrying Prince Harry." The head nurse still couldn't wrap her head around it. She had seen Evee in the newspapers a tons of times but still, Evee had always been the shy girl who came to this department three years ago. The one the kids favoured, the one who fought pirates. She was going to see the girl marry a prince. Her employee was going to be a duchess.
How in the world had this happened?!
"I want to thank you for every opportunity Janice. I want to thank you for showing me the way in this department. To be the guide I needed. I have learned so much in this building. I have learned so much about myself." Shit, she had promised she wouldn't cry. She couldn't even see Janice anymore through her tears. "This place means so much to me but, Harry... Harry means the world to me." Somehow Janice knew where this was headed. "I will not be able to work here any longer as soon as they announce it to the public. I will need to be next to Harry." Evee sniffed, pulling her resigning papers out of the big envelope. "I'm so sorry Janice. I am. I know how understaffed this place is, I feel terri-"
"Hey, hey, hey." The head nurse placed her hand over Evee's trembling one, carefully not touching the expensive looking ring. "Don't be sorry, Eveline. It's alright, I know you love him very much. I don't want you to feel guilty for being with the person you love."
"I can't help it, I feel terrible for leaving this behind but it's something I have to do."
"I know that, we know that." Janice smiled, carefully grabbing the papers. "I will send these through to the CEO. If it makes you feel any better, I think they will like you marrying a prince. It's good advertisement for the hospital if once a duchess worked here."
Evee let out a sad chuckle, "Thank you. For everything, I mean it. For introducing me to Harry, for demanding me to go that polo match. If it wasn't for you..."
"I am allowed to feel a little special, aren't I?" The blonde laughed when Janice scrunched up her nose. "I just, can I say something, Evee?" It was the first time her boss had called her Evee. In all those years Janice always spoke to her in her full name.
The blonde just nodded her head, a little surprised at her namecalling. "If ever in your life, you think that you're not good enough for a prince, I want you to remember every single smile you have brought upon these kids' faces. I might have not always told you how good you are, nor complimented you a lot. Let's face it, I was behind your ass all day." Janice chuckled. Oh there it was again, Evee's waterfalls running over her cheeks. "This royal family, they're god damn lucky to have you. Prince Harry should kiss both of his hands. You're a good person. You have a big heart. You should be proud of yourself. I am so very much proud of you. You might marry a prince and turn into a Duchess but remember, you have reigned these hallways for the past three years. These kids will always consider you as their queen."
Evee nodded her head, still thankful for every opportunity the older nurse had given her.
"I will be watching that wedding, that's for sure."
"Janice, if you think you're not invited then you're delusional." The blonde smiled, wiping the tears from her eyes and stretching her legs.
"Really?"
"You made me go to that polo match, it's time I return the favor." Eveline grinned.
"We will miss you around here, you know." Janice spoke, coming from behind her desk and gently guiding Evee towards the door. "And can I just say one more thing?" She spoke, opening the door for the blonde who just nodded her head. "I made some of those sex coupons for my husband as well."
Evee coughed at Janice who just laughed at the nurse. She knew about that?! "Let's just forget you said that." The blonde mumbled, trying to disguise her red cheeks by bowing her head a bit. Evee was just about to step into the hallway when she saw Chloe running down towards her.
"EVEE!?!"
"Hi Chloe."
"LET ME SEE IT. LET ME SEE IT." The brunette frantically grabbed Evee's left hand.
"OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD."
"Janice, is it possible that I could use your office for just two minutes." Eveline adverted her eyes towards the hallway, praying to god that none of the patients nor relatives heard the brunette screaming.
Janice laughed, already marching towards the infirmary. "Go ahead. My lips are sealed."
Nodding her head, the blonde grabbed Chloe's wrist and dragged her into the office. "Please don't cry, Chloe."
"I'm not crying." Evee had to chuckle when her colleague eagerly looked at the ceiling, trying to stop her eyes from over spilling. "Congratulations." She spoke, immediately throwing her arms around Evee's neck and burying her face into her shoulder. "I'm so happy for you."
Nodding her head, she replied quietly. "Thank you."
"So I guess you won't be coming back, right?"
"I'm sorry." Urgh, there Evee was again with the tears. She didn't think she had any left.
The two girls sobbed in each other's arms for a minute or two. "I'll miss you so much."
"Hey. I might be leaving this hospital but you won't get rid of me so quickly." Evee spoke, taking a step back and looking at Chloe. She looked like a hot mess.
"No?" She replied in a tiny voice.
"Of course not. I'll always be Evee. Plus, we have a wedding to plan, you know?" Eveline smiled, looking at Chloe's confused face. "I hope you don't think I would just put you in the audience, right?"
"What?"
"This might be a little too soon but I was actually wondering if you wanted to be my maid of honor. I mean, I know royal weddings technically don't have one, but let's just pretend."
"What?"
"Chloe. Maid of honor, you. My important go to girlfriend."
"Me?"
"Yes, you. Of course, I don't see anyone more cut out for the job than you, in all honesty."
Chloe looked a little shocked at Evee, "You want me to be your Pippa?"
"What the hell are you on about?" Couldn't the girl just say yes? It would make things a lot more easy.
"You want me to be the Pippa to your Kate?" She questioned timidly and shockingly once again towards the blonde. Chloe just couldn't digest the words.
Evee couldn't help but laugh, "If that's what you call it then please Chloe, be my Pippa?"
Sobbingly the girl nodded her head, "I would love to be your Pippa, Evee."
"Good. Come here, silly girl." The nurse took Chloe in her arms once again, ignoring the fact that there would be tear stains all over her blouse.
Oh well, she still owed Chloe a Calvin Klein sweater, it didn't matter.
