Chapter Sixty Four

The visit towards Harry's mother's grave had been an emotional one. Evee didn't let go of her boyfriend's hand the entire time. She had met the Spencer family and thought that in particular Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, was very kind and charming. He had shown the couple some of Harry's mother's favourite places on the property. Where she spent her childhood, her favorite tree, her favorite room. The man really took his time to inform Eveline about her. At the end of the day, Evee felt like she knew Harry's mother a lot more and it made her more than happy that Harry had a smile on his face when they left the property.

Since the engagement ring took over a month to make and the prince wanted to show the ring to her parents, her mother had agreed on him visiting them in March. He had told her he wanted to discuss something important, not revealing his true plans towards her parents. The days before actually travelling up to Belgium had been to worst in his life. He spoken in front of a thousand people, had been publically sent to a rehab by his dad and embarrassed by the newspapers a million times before but when it came down to asked his girlfriend's father for her hand, his heart didn't seem to handle it quite right.

The Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge tried to calm him down, giving him some advice on how to handle the situation. They instructed him to just open his heart towards her father, talk about the consequences of being married to him and why he loved her so much. William spoke about how he did it with Kate's father but they soon had to realize this was a whole different situation.

Evee and Harry hadn't been together for a number of years and Michael Middleton was nothing compared to Danny Delamane. Showing a picture of Evee's dad took them both a little back. William couldn't help but make fun of his little brother. It was quite unfortunate that his soon to be father in law was the size of a buffalo.

The drive from the airport towards Sint-Niklaas, Evee's hometown was one filled with prayers. Harry had purposely left James at the airport, this was something he had to do himself. His sweaty handpalms had gripped the steering wheel too forcefely the entire ride and even the radio couldn't pull his mind out of it. He had told her parents not to mention anything to Evee and Harry himself had told her his grandmother asked for him in Balmoral, so he would be gone for two days.

She didn't make a big deal out of it and didn't think twice.

When he pulled the black range rover into the long driveway, he mumbled to himself, "Mom, stay with me for this one." Patting his jacket one more time, making sure that the little box was still safely with him, he opened the car door and marched towards the front of the house. It still looked the same since almost a year ago. "Right, you can do this Harry. You've got this." He spoke quietly, pushing the doorbell.

The door was opened by Ingrid, Evee's mother who had the biggest grin on her face. "Harry! It's so nice to see you again!" She immediately took him in her arms, the smile never leaving her face. "It's a shame you didn't bring my daughter. Is everything alright?" She took a step back, her hands still on his upperarms.

"Everything is fine, Mrs Delamane." He smiled at the blonde lady who looked so much like his girlfriend. The same green eyes were staring right through him.

"Well, let's come in then. Can't be waiting in the hallway." She closed the front door. "Isn't James with you?"

"No, no. He's still at the airport." Harry shook his head.

"Would you mind taking off your shoes? I just cleaned up in here." Ingrid spoke, a little embarrassed herself.

"Oh no, it's okay." Taking off his shoes was the last thing on his mind. Crunching down he opened his laces and took them off, revealing his black socks. He prayed to god he didn't have sweaty feet.

"It's a shame you didn't bring James, he's quite the looker." Her mother spoke, holding back a friendly grin. "Don't tell my husband I said that though."

Harry chuckled, she always made him feel so welcome, "I won't, I promise."

Remembering the story Eveline told him a month ago about her childhood, he couldn't help but watch the woman in front of him. She was a really pretty lady and she had always been so kind. He didn't seem to understand why Evee's father would do that to her. Then again, he never really understood his own father's commitments either. His own mother had been really pretty and kind as well. "Let's get you into the living room, Danny's been waiting for you."

As soon as Harry stepped into the cozy living room, he saw her father sitting in one of the couches. Was it even possible that the man gained more muscles since he saw him last summer? "Mr Delamane." Harry smiled, sticking out his hand for her father to shake.

"Harry." A small smile formed upon the older man's features, he gladly accepted the handshake but couldn't help his gut feeling. When the man heard that his daughter's prince would be visiting, not to mention on his own, he knew something was up. He had called his own daughter just days ago, of course not mentioning anything about her boyfriend's visit, but just to make sure she was happy.

The blonde nurse just arrived home when her cellphone went off. She knew the ringtone all too well. It was their song. The one her father and her had danced upon a million times when she was still at home.

"Hey papa."

"Eveline, hoe is het?" (Eveline, how are you?) Her father questioned.

"Nog altijd hetzelfde als eergisteren, toen we gefacetimed hebben." (Still the same as the day before yesterday, when we facetimed.) She replied, chuckling.

"Ik mis je gewoon, dat is al." (Just missing you, that's all.) He smiled hearing her voice.

"Ik mis je ook papa." (I miss you too daddy.) She sighed, placing the phone in between her left ear and shoulder and putting the groceries she just bought in her fridge.

"We babbelen nooit meer zoveel, gewoon wij met ons twee." (We don't really that as much anymore, just us two.)

"Papa..." (Daddy...)

"Ben je gelukkig?" (Are you happy?)

Evee stared at her kitchencabinet for a while, why was he making this phonecall? This was odd. "Papa, ik ben nog nooit zo gelukkig geweest." (Daddy, I've never been this happy in my life.)

"Maakt hij je gelukkig?" (Does he make you happy?) Evee frowned at his voice, he seemed troubled.

"Ik zie hem doodgraag. Ik ben nog nooit gelukkiger geweest." (I love him to death, I've never been happier)

"Goed. Ik hoop dat je mij liever ziet, toch?" (Good, I still hope you love me a little more.) Danny chuckled, being pleased with his daughter's response.

"Je weet dat je altijd nummer een blijft, papa." (You know you'll always be my number one, daddy.)

Swallowing his proud, Danny watched how his wife brought his daughter's heart a glass of water. The prince was seated right in front of him. The retired cop could see how nervous the boy was. He had seen it throughout his entire carrier, Harry had every symptom in the book. He was wiping his hand on his thighs, his ears were turning red, he swallowed too much and his breath was deep and uneven.

Harry stared at the couple sitting in front of him, he knew all too well that her father knew what he was doing in their home. Her mother was looking a little confused. "The reason why I came here today-" He swallowed the lump in his throat. "You know I love your daughter very, very much."

Danny nodded his head, not wanting to interrupt the boy.

"I've been searching for someone like her my entire life and I was told that when you finally find the one, you would know. And I don't know a lot of things, but I do know that for me, your daughter is the one."

He could hear Ingrid take a deep breath, the realization finally hit her home. "Oh mijn god." Harry heard her mumble underneath her gasp.

"I've never been more happier than I am when I'm with her. I see her as my future wife, as the mother of my children. I see her as the person I want to love and cherish for the rest of my life. I understand the seriousness of this commitment and spending the rest of my life with your daughter would make me the happiest person in the world. I understand that you want the best for you daughter but I will always honor, respect and cherish her. I will do everything in my power to protect her." Harry tried to ignore Evee's mother sniffling in the background.

"It would mean the world to me to have your blessing and support to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage."

Danny tried to look mean, he really tried to make to boy as uncomfortable as possible but when he saw Harry sitting in front of him, shaking hands and shaking voice, he didn't have the heart. He thought the prince was going to faint any moment now if he didn't open up his mouth. "Harry, my daughter loves you very much, I know that." Danny spoke in a thick accent. "But I do hope you realize that by being who you are, this isn't very easy for me. I always wanted to keep my daughter close and in some sort of way, I always failed to do that."

Harry looked at the man from underneath his eyelashes, he was already relieved that the big man didn't punch him for just asking. Danny actually seemed quite emotional and Evee's mother was now a blubbering mess.

"With you and her being in the newspapers all the time, don't think I forgot what happened in South Africa." Danny eyed the young man. Harry didn't dare to speak, he was too embarrassed. "But Evee did everything in her possibility to show me what kind of a man you are. She explained the situation and I noticed, unfortunately through pictures and videos, how ridiculously sick in love you two are. She always has a smile on her face when she's with you."

Harry just wanted him to say it.

"Do I think this is a little too soon? Yes, I do think it's a little too soon, Harry. But I know my daughter, I know how she feels about you and I can't deny the fact that you make her happy. I know you're a good kid, I might not show that to you, but you're a good kid, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If you want to marry my daughter and she'll have you, then you have my blessing."

The prince couldn't help but grin. Relief fell off his shoulder as he watched his future father in law stand up and opening his arms. It was the first time both of them would hug and it meant a great deal to Harry. "You promise to protect her, right?" He heard Danny speak in his ear in a thick accent.

"Always, sir." He mumbled, being a little red eyed himself.

"Welcome to the family, Harry." He heard Ingrid speak when he released Evee's father. Turning towards her, he quickly took her into his arms. "Do you have a ring already?"

Harry grinned and tried to do his best to ignore Danny's tears. The man tried to wipe them away with his thumb as quickly as possible. "Yes. I've brought it along actually, to show you." He managed to grab the little black box from inside his jacket. Quickly opening it to show the ring to her parents, he watched as both their mouths fell open, "Harry, she'll love that. It's beautiful."

"I do hope so. Chloe and Kate helped me with it, we've designed it ourselves."

"I bet Chloe was excited." Ingrid spoke, eyeing the many diamonds in the little box. She knew it was probably worth a fortune and didn't dare to touch it.

"She cried a lot." Harry chuckled, carefuly watching how Danny's eyes scanned the ring.

"Wait until the wedding." Ingrid smiled, "When are you asking her?"

"If everything goes well, next month."

"Are you happy, Harry?" He heard Danny speak with a smile on his face.

"Ecstatic."
