Chapter Sixty Eight
When the plane touched land the next morning, the couple made sure no one spotted the big rock on Evee's finger. Harry didn't want her to take the ring off so it was necessary for them to keep a low profile. Thankfully the ride from the airport towards Kensington Palace didn't cause any problems. Apart from the 57 missed calls and 32 text messages, Evee didn't have anything on her mind. "Right. Parents or Chloe first?" She mumbled to herself.
"My father just send me a message that Camilla and him are eagerly waiting on our arrival at Will's."
She nodded her head, silently thankful that she had been able to get a little sleep on the plane. The car ride had passed fairly quickly since Evee had to call her parents, whom insisted that she also called her brother to tell him the news. Even though Eveline had nearly really seen her brother as the emotional guy, she thought she saw his eyes welling up through their Facetime conversation.
"Congratulations, sis." Alexander beamed when he saw the big smile upon his little sister's face. "Congratulations Harry." He also added when the ginger shoved his face into the screen with an equal grin on his face.
"I'm going to have to get me a really expensive suit now, aren't I?" He joked towards Harry.
"All in time mate, all in time. No need to worry about that just yet." Harry spoke, waving at Andreas who new stepped in front of the cellphone's camera.
"Andreas, je meter gaat trouwen met een prins, ze gaat nu ook een prinses worden. Je weet toch wat dit wil zeggen? Veel dure cadeautjes als je verjaart!" (Andres, your aunt is going to marry Harry, do you remember him? He's a prince, she'll be a princess then. Do you need what that means? A lot of expensive gifts when it's our birthday!) Her brother spoke in Dutch, teasing his sister.
"Alex!" She cursed, thanking her lucky stars that Harry couldn't speak Dutch nor understood him. "Right, we need to go. We've arrived at Kensington."
"That's where you'll live now right? When can I visit?"
"When you stop being a pain in my ass!" She hushed towards him.
"I'm kidding sissie, I love you. Harry's a lucky man, Britain's a lucky country. I know people will lose their minds over here. A common Belgian marrying a British Prince. Have you told Mathias by the way?"
"No I haven't, you're the second person I've called. I'll will call everyone important up before the palace lets the public know." She spoke.
"He's going to lose his mind."
"I doubt he'll be the only one." Evee replied, knowing fully well how much Mathias and Chloe would go nuts. "I need to go now, okay? Talk to you later."
"Okay, congratulations again." Her brother and Andreas waved at her as she did the same, finally closing the call.
When the car finally pulled into the secured gates and stopped in front of the courtyard, she opened the door and stepped out. It was a typical London day, it wasn't too cold or too hot. Harry opened the trunk to carry their suitcases inside of Nottingham Cottage but was interrupted by some screaming. "Uncle Hawwie! Evee!" George was sitting on his little tractor, racing towards them.
"Hi little man!" Harry immediately dropped the suitcase on the floor to pick up his little nephew from the plastic vehicle.
"Hey Georgie!" Evee grinned at the sight in front of her.
"Grandpa is here!" The little blonde man grinned, throwing his arms around Harry's neck. "Wants to see you two!"
"Harry! Evee!" She immediately recognized William's voice from a far. He marched towards them with his long legs. Kate wasn't far behind.
"So? So?!" The duchess looked nice in her white summer dress and cardigan. Her eyes immediately adverted towards Evee's fingers, releasing a little squeal when she noticed the rock on her left hand. "Aaaah! Congratulations! I'm so excited! Do you like the ring, do you like it?! I helped picking it out!" She proudly spoke, ignoring Harry's proud grin and the slight rolling of his eyes. "It looks so good on you though!" The brunette grabbed Evee's wrist, looking closely at her finger.
"Right, Kate, can I actually congratulate the couple as well and then scold them a little for turning off their phones for two weeks? I've been waiting to do that you know." William spoke, looking at his wife.
"Oh! And you're so tan!" She spoke, looking at Evee's skin. "You're practically glowing! You guys look so happy."
"Kate-" Evee tried holding back laughter, when she saw Kate rolling her eyes at her husband.
"Fine go ahead." She spoke, going over towards Harry for a hug.
William's scolding face immediately turned into a grin, which made Evee even laugh more. "Congratulations, both of you. I'm very happy. God, I'm looking forward to see you cry so much." William told his brother, wrapping his arms around him. "At one point in life, I thought you were just going to be an old, drunk man with fifty cats but look at you." Evee had to giggle at Harry's red cheeks, "Evee, welcome to the family. We're all very happy that you've decided to marry the spare."
"It's the least I could do, William." She joked along, stepping into Harry's brother's hug.
"I hate you two together." Harry mumbled, watching his fiancée and brother joke.
"Come on, we're funny and you know it." She was about to tease him more but when she saw her future father in law stepping into the courtyard along with his wife, she thought it was best to keep her dignity.
"Harry! I've been trying to call you for ages!" The Prince of Wales spoke. "I was quite worried. Evee, you look astonishing as always." Charles leaned in to peck the girl's cheek. His eyes carefully turned themselves towards the ring on her finger. "I think congratulations are in the order."
"Oh it looks marvelous on you, Eveline." Camilla spoke, kissing Evee's cheek as well.
"Congratulations, both of you. I look forward to another wedding, especially if I'm gaining another pretty daughter in law." Charles grinned, receiving a hug from his son as well. "The world will lose their minds once again. I'm so very proud of you, son."
"Come on, let's get inside, I've cooled some champagne." Kate spoke, slapping her hands together.
In the last hour Evee had told everything about her trip towards Kate and Camilla, speaking about the beauty of Lesotho, how everyone was so excited for their arrival, how good Harry was with the kids, how much fun she had hiking and of course, about his proposal. She told them that it was absolutely perfect. "He cried, didn't he?" Kate grinned, sipping from her champagne. She didn't even care that it noon.
"A little, yes." She beamingly replied.
"William did as well." The brunette nodded.
Their conversation was interrupted by Harry, who sat himself down next to her on the couch. "Are you guys having fun gossiping about my amazing proposal?"
"We are actually having a lot of fun, yes." Camilla grinned at her stepson.
"I'm sorry to interrupt this little meeting then, but my father called in the press supervisor so if I can kidnap my fiancée for a little while." Kate could spot the grin on his face when he spoke the word fiancée.
Evee quickly said goodbye to Kate and Camilla and stretched her legs, following Harry's lead when he managed to grab her hand. They walked through the corridors of Kensington Palace, finally stopping at a wooden door. He turned around towards the blonde, "This is just to plan everything a little. It won't take long."
The nurse nodded her head, following him as he opened the door. Evee thought there would only be one person in the room, sitting at the round table. She was mistaken, the room was filled with people, every single one of them looking at the couple with smiles upon their faces. Evee was sure she looked a little taken back when everyone congratulated the both of them and even bowed their heads at her. A middle aged man who had kind eyes, gently did the same. "Congratulations. We're very excited for the both of you."
"Thank you, Oliver. Let's get to business then." Evee watched as Harry pulled out a chair for her and helped her in. She ignored everyone's sweet looks as she blushed. She didn't really like being the centre of attention.
"We need a date." Oliver spoke. The blonde was a little taken back at how straight forward they were. She noticed half of them were typing on their computers, she didn't even know what they were doing. They hadn't even spoken two words.
"Spring 2018, March Fourth, right Evee?" Harry turned towards her for acknowledgement.
"That is a Sunday, sir."
"Is that a bad thing?" Evee questioned, not really sure.
"No, we can make a Sunday work." Oliver spoke, "We just have to make sure people won't judge. If you keep in mind that every employee will have to be paid in double time. We will need thousands of security men and police officers and everyone one of them will have to get payed. The costs would rise and we do not want any trouble with the government."
Evee was a little taken back. Thousands of employees? Just for their wedding? "We can do it on March Second as well, Harry. That's a Friday. I don't mind." She looked at her fiancée. "We can still have the weekend to celebrate."
Harry looked a little troubled, March Fourth was their day. "Only if that's alright for you."
"We don't need an exact date right now at the spot. We understand that it's still a little early, but just a timeframe would be nice."
"Tell them March 2018 then." Harry replied, letting go of the subject for now.
"We would advise to do an interview and a photoshoot as soon as the press statement gets out. You would both have to clear your agenda for that. Your father advised me to do it as soon as possible before anything leaks."
Evee gently nodded her head, letting the words sink in. Harry replied, "The day after tomorrow then?" His eyes adverted towards the blonde sitting right next to him. "You would still have time to resign from work and contact everybody. Plus fix you up with a stylist and a dress for the interview and photoshoot."
It was in that moment Eveline decided to just go with the flow. She could feel her mind getting cramped up with all the things that had to be done. The severe lack of sleep didn't help either.
She slightly nodded her head at Harry, who gave her left hand a little squeeze. Oliver looked up at the both of them, "Okay Wednesday May Third 2017 at noon we will inform the world of your engagement."
That night Evee had bickered with Harry over where she would sleep, she knew she would have to move soon and she wanted to say goodbye to her apartment on her own. She had always loved her flat, it was cozy and it always made her feel like home. He had finally agreed on her staying on her own for just one more night. He wanted her to have a goodnight of sleep, he knew he wouldn't be getting any. There were tons of more meetings to arrange everything, from Evee's security guard, to the plan of finally giving her a decent vehicle to drive (he hadn't told her that one though), to making sure his in laws in Belgium were just as safe as she was, to calling personal friends of his as well to inform them.
It was almost ten o'clock when she arrived at her apartment, exhausted as hell. She had called Chloe, who screamed in delight when she told her the news. The girl wanted to come over but unfortunately, Evee was still at Kensington's too busy getting her measurements for the ideal fitting of the dress that night. She felt really bad for Chloe, but the brunette seemed to understand.
Evee had promised her they would catch up soon. She had told Chloe that she was going to come to the hospital tomorrow and they would see each other there.
As soon as her head hit the soft pillows of her bed, she fell fast asleep.
