Chapter Seventy
On Wednesday May Third 2017 the world was informed about the engagement. It was Kensington Palace who sent out the first tweet and officially announced it on their website.
Kensington Palace is delighted to announce the engagement of His Royal Highness Prince Harry to Miss Eveline Delamane.
The wedding will take place in the Spring of 2018, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.
Prince Harry and Miss Delamane became engaged in April 2017 on a private holiday in Lesotho. Prince Harry has informed The Queen and other close members of the family. Prince Harry has also sought the permission of Miss Delamane's father.
Following the marriage, the couple will live in Nottingham Cottage, where Prince Harry and Miss Delamane will continue their royal duties.
Soon Buckingham Palace and Clarence House followed with their congratulations on Twitter.
Her Majesty is overjoyed by the news of Prince Harry and Miss Eveline Delamane's engagement and is eagerly anticipating towards the upcoming wedding.
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall send their congratulations to the happy couple. They are looking forward to welcoming Miss Delamane into the family.
And with these statements, the world lost its mind. The news had taken over newspapers, television- and radio shows all over the globe.
Kate Middleton might have been a common girl in the upperclass, but Eveline Delamane was one of them. She was the girl who knew what a hard working job was. She was the one who didn't go to an exclusive school. She was the one who seemed to have charmed the prince by just her smile and laughter. In Belgium, they had made many unofficial documentaries about the girl, digging deep in her past and speculations on how both of them met. They would put it on repeat the whole day.
When they heard that BBC would broadcast an interview the following evening, everybody in the country changed their channels to see the happy couple on screen. The couple had always been very private so it would be the first time that they would hear their story. Everybody was curious on how the girl managed to sweep a prince off his feet so quickly.
The couple had decided to give the interview in the gardens of Kensington Palace, the weather was on their side. Underneath the Cherry Tree where Evee had thrown Harry his surprise party stood one graceful bench, ready to be seated on. There were many cameras and lightening equipment surrounding it. They would do the interview in the afternoon, when the sun shined brightly against the neatly kept green lawn.
"Right. We have gone over these questions. You'll do great, sweety." Harry smiled, rubbing his hand over her upperarms.
"I'm so nervous though." The blonde spoke, trying not to bite her lip. The make-up artist would kill her if any of her lipstick got stuck on her teeth.
"If it helps, I am too. That and the fact that I am literally sweating my balls off." Harry mumbled in her ear. Evee couldn't help but laugh, throwing her hand in front of her mouth. The weather was quite hot and he was wearing his signature blue suit. "You look breathtaking by the way."
"Thank you." The blonde smiled. She and Kate had watched William and hers engagement interview that morning and noticed how their hair looked similar. Kate had given her some advice, pointing out the mistakes she had made. Six years later, the duchess wished the interview would have been a little less forced.
Evee tried not to dance on the balls of her feet. She had to keep her weight on her toes, so her heels wouldn't sink into the grass. Her light pink dress hugged her skin perfectly and with much grace. She wasn't really into it at first, but when she put it on, she knew why the designers wanted her to wear that dress. It really fit the ring remarkably.
The palace advised her to only wear the center of the ring for now. She was going to save up the other parts for the photoshoot. Evee smirked a little at how the people would react. It would be quite a surprise.
The couple shook hands with Tom. He was the official interviewer for the palace. Harry had known the man for quite some time, he even did William's engagement interview. He knew Tom would be able to calm them both down a little. A familiar face was always welcoming.
"Miss Delamane you would do good to cross your hands and lay your left hand upon your right, so the ring is visibly throughout the entire interview." Tom spoke, gently guiding her towards the bench. "Legs closed, slightly turned towards His Royal Highness, hands upon lap and left hand upon your right." He instructed.
Evee tried nodding her head, ignoring the finishing touches of make-up and hair adjustments. The crew was terrified there would be too much wind outside but the couple insisted on doing it underneath the tree. She made contact with Harry, giving him a small smile. "You'll be good." He nodded his head in encouragement, ignoring his own heart beating in his throat. He never liked this part. He gently sat himself down, placing one hand over hers and gently squeezing it. Harry tugged on his vest, making sure it looked good.
"We'll start with where you proposed Harry and why you choose that particular place. We're already rolling." Harry shrugged with a smile upon his face, adverting his eyes to his future bride once more with a smile.
Evee couldn't help but smile back, she knew how nervous he was. "It was about three weeks ago in the Highlands of Lesotho. We were on a private vacation. I wanted to show Evee the beauty of South Africa. Knowing how much Lesotho means to me, I knew I didn't want to do it anywhere else."
She nodded her head at his words, her eyes twinkling as she thought back at that one particular moment. "It was very romantic."
"And you said yes." Tom replied towards Evee, her hands still in her lap.
"Of course. It was absolutely perfect."
"And you knew you were going to propose to her from day one?" Tom questioned looking at Harry.
"I knew I was going to propose on that holiday, yes. I didn't plan it on that particular moment but it just felt right."
"When were you going to do it?"
"We were supposed to go on a hike the next day and I had one particular waterfall in my mind that would be the perfect background but looking back, I wouldn't change it for the world. We were lying underneath the stars, just talking and I realized I didn't need the perfect background. I just needed Evee and the stars."
Evee cursed internally because she bit her lip at his words. She just wanted to grab him and kiss him, but the only thing she could do was watch him with lovesick eyes.
"The world is quite surprised with this engagement, you haven't been together for that long. When did you decide you wanted to propose?"
"I've been thinking about it since Christmas, that's when I asked my grandmother for permission."
"And her majesty said yes, obviously."The interviewer spoke.
"My grandmother is quite fond of Evee. The first time they've met she was able to charm her way into her heart so she was happy to hear about my request." Harry replied.
"You've been able to get along quite well with the family yourself, Eveline?" Tom questioned, looking at the beautiful blonde.
"Oh yes, they're all very lovely and welcoming." She nodded her head, noticing how Harry was looking at her with a smile.
"From pictures we can assume that The Duchess of Cambridge and you are very close."
"I can definitely say that Catherine and I share a bond, yes. She immediately took me into her arms and guided me. We have a well formed friendship."
"Catherine and Evee's best friend actually took part in choosing the ring." Harry spoke.
Tom was surprised with that information, "It's a very beautiful ring. Can you tell us more about it?"
"It's actually a custom made ring by one of my mother's favorite designers, he came by my house in all secrecy to discuss the ring and one month later, the job was done."
"I'm very happy with it, Harry did an amazing job. It's beautiful." Evee smiled, releasing one hand from her lap and covering it with his.
Shit, she forgot she wasn't allowed to do that. She wanted to pull her hand back but was surprised when Harry covered it with own, firmly planting both on his left thigh.
"Let's have a look at it. What kind of a ring is it?"
"I'm definitely not an expert but I know it's a morganite with some diamonds." Harry replied, looking at the ring himself, still not letting go of her right hand.
"Well, it had so be said, you both look incredibly happy and in love." The interviewer spoke, loving the fact that they didn't let go of each other's hand.
"We are, we are." The couple grinned at each other, holding back some laughter. "I think we're very excited."
"Harry, it's not a secret that the world has been keeping an eye on you in terms with finding a wife. Are you happy with this new chapter in your life?"
"I honestly, wasn't really searching for someone when I first saw Evee. Everyone, apart from me, was looking to match me up with someone but when you know, you just know. I knew she was very special from the start."
"We haven't really heard any particular things about how you guys met, only that it happened on a royal engagement. Were you participating in that, Eveline?"
"I wasn't actually." Harry and her had talked what they would say about their first encounter, they wouldn't tell the whole story. He knew his grandmother wouldn't be happy with them talking about Evee's black eye and hangover, even though it was a funny story. "He was visiting the children's hospital, where I worked at the time. We just caught each other's eye there but didn't really communicate any further. It was when Harry invited the hospital to a charity polo match that we really spoke."
"Rumors say that you weren't impressed with his lines in the beginning." The interviewer spoke with a smile.
Harry interrupted immediately with some laughter, "I did have to charm my way around her, yes. She definitely made me work for it."
"I wasn't really used to the world that Harry lived in. I honestly didn't think I would ever stand a chance with him so imagine my surprise when he called me up on a Friday night."
"I was really nervous making that phonecall to ask her out."
"You did sound really surprised when I said yes, though." Evee turned towards him with a grin.
"You are sometimes very intimidating." He laughed, forgetting that there were cameras around and teasing his girlfriend.
"I am not!" She grinned, playfully slapping his upperarm.
"See?" He grinned at the interviewer.
She almost wanted to call him out but remembered the cameras in front of her. The interviewer laughed at them, loving their genuine happiness, "What made Eveline stand out from the rest, Harry?"
"The first thing that I noticed were her green eyes, they just pierced right through me. Then I saw her playing around with the kids at the hospital. She was telling them stories about pirates and princesses and it made my heart swell from the beginning."
"So love at first sight then?" The interviewer spoke.
"I think I definitely knew she was very special. So yes, I guess you can say love at first sight for me." Harry nodded his head, smiling at Evee and squeezing her hand.
"I can imagine the surprise on your parents faces when you told them you were dating a prince, Eveline."
"Oh yes, they were very surprised."
"I think they always imagined you coming home with a rockstar, hens the disappointment when a prince shows up at their doorstep." Harry laughed.
"That's not true." Evee grinned, "My parents love you."
"You did ask her father for her hand?" The interviewer spoke.
"Yes, I travelled to Belgium in March to ask Mister Delamane for her hand. The drive from the airport towards their home was one of the longest drives of my life. I was very nervous for that but they were both very happy for us."
The interviewer nodded his head, moving on towards the next question. "You both had a little bump in the road in August." He stated, the couple knew that the pictures with Harry hugging his ex would come up. "What was that like?"
Even though she knew it was coming up, she was a little taken back by the question. "I think for me personally- I, I still needed to get used to everything. The paparazzi, the articles, the attention. It's not really easy to deal with. Harry did his best to guide me through everything but sometimes it can still go to your head and I think at that point, it really did break me for a few days." She spoke quietly.
"I think you shouldn't believe everything you read in the papers. There was quite a bit of miscommunication but I'm glad we sorted everything out." Harry spoke, hoping to end the subject. He didn't want to talk about Chelsy in this interview. This was their time. Not the time to reminisce old lovers.
The interviewer got the hint and moved on. "Obviously, people know that you're both good with children. We have seen many pictures of you both with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, are there any plans in the future for your own family?"
Harry replied with enthusiasm immediately, "Well, we both are really keen on having a family of our own but first things first, we need to get married and then, yes, I think there will be a lot of babies involved." He looked at Evee with a held back grin.
She tried not to laugh and roll her eyes at him. "Harry's been looking forward to that part for some time now yes."
"Come on, you have been too!" He grinned at her.
"Maybe a little." She grinned back at him.
"Harry, I have to say that you look the happiest you have been in quite some time now." The interviewer stated.
"I am very happy. I think I've finally found my place." The prince replied.
"It hasn't always been very easy for you, with your mother's passing..." Tom gently spoke.
"It's never easy for a young boy to grow up without a mother, so I did have my share of trouble. I didn't want to talk about it for the first 20 years afterwards. I thought if I wouldn't speak of it, the void would go away but it never does."
Evee swallowed the little lump in her throat, giving him the silence to speak. "Miss Delamane, it cannot be easy for you to be compared to his mother when it comes to your work with children."
"I'm not looking to replace her in any sort of way. She was a very remarkable woman. I truly look up to the work that she did and how she raised her children." She immediately spoke.
"Is that the way you would raise your children?"
"I think I would like them to be as normal as possible, yes. I would like to show them the world as it is."
"Harry, have you been able to speak about it more now? Does it get easier with time?"
"It does get easier in time, but it helps when you find someone who's willing to give you the silence when you want to speak. Someone who has the patience to listen to you."
"And Eveline does that for you?"
The blonde looked down a little embarrassed. It was a little awkward how they kept speaking of her like she wasn't there, definitely when it came to such strong subjects. "She definitely does." He slightly nodded his head, making eyecontact with his fiancée as she gave him a gentle encouraging smile.
"There are a lot of opportunities for you, to make a real difference in a lot of people's lives. Is that something you will take in mind?"
She nodded her head, "Yes, I really hope I can make a difference in my own way. Healthcare is something very close to my heart. I-I'm looking forward to step up the plate and be the best I can be for the people. To help as much as I can."
"I have complete trust in you." Harry spoke, putting his hand on her knee and giving it an encouraging squeeze.
"Well thank you very much for talking to us. You look, like I said in the start, both very happy. Congratulations again and good luck."
Evee and Harry both smiled at the interviewer, "Thank you."
When she heard the producer yell cut, Evee let out a big sigh. "Thank god, that is over. I was so nervous."
"You did really well." Harry grinned, throwing his arm around her neck to kiss her temple . "I'm proud of you."
