Chapter One Hundred - Part Four
Author's note: It's because of all the nice comments. Thank yourself for this one.
"How have you been doing today?" Anna spoke, eyeing Evee sitting in front of her. The blonde searched for Anna's glance in the mirror, giving her a friendly smile.
"It's been... Amazing, overwhelming, wonderful..." Evee answered, watching how her stylist carefully grasped the Cambridge Lover's Knot and placed it upon her hair. It felt heavier than the Strathmore Rose, it was bigger even so but it actually fit her quite well. She tried not crook her head in astonishment.
This was how Harry's mother felt every time they placed it upon her hair. "Did you have time to rest a little while?" Anne spoke, her eyes glued upon the tiara, trying to put it on Evee's head as best as possible.
"Yes, we did. It was nice, just the two of us, only if it was just for a couple of hours. I'm going to be really glad when we're actually off to our honeymoon. Away from all this... Attention." Evee smiled.
"I can see how it gets overwhelming sometimes and definitely today." Anna spoke, "I think we're all set."
Evee nodded her head, "It's easier without the veil."
"Hey..." Anna said, placing a hand upon the now new Duchess. "This is the part where you already relax. These are your friends and family, this is a private party. It's your wedding. Your private wedding. Enjoy it, don't hold back here. You owe it to yourself. You've done marvelous today."
Evee couldn't help but smile appreciatively, "Thank you, Anna." She nodded her head. "I'll see you in a half an hour in the ballroom, right?"
"Wouldn't have it any other way." She squeezed Evee's hand one more time before the blonde turned around. "Go have fun."
Eveline nodded one more time before she strolled out of the room, entering the hallway to see Bobby standing there, waiting for her. "Bobby, I thought you got the invite for the party tonight? Your shift ended a half an hour ago. Go meet up with your girlfriend, alright?" The man's eyes searched through Evee's in consideration. "I'm at Kensington now, I'll be fine. It's an order."
"Okay, Your Royal Highness, I wi-"
"Please, Bobby." She held up a hand, implying to stop his silly names.
"Okay, Evee." He slowly nodded his head, holding back a smile. "His Royal Highness is waiting for you in drawing room, you will enter the ballroom where the wedding party is held in half an hour."
"Thank you." She smiled. "I will see you later on?"
"Of course." He nodded his head. She smiled at him one more time before picking up the front of her wedding gown and walking towards the drawing room. Her knuckles made contact with the high, cream-coloured, detailed door and when she finally heard her husband gently say come in, she slowly opened it.
He was sitting in one of the futons, his hands crossed in front of him, his arms leaning on his thighs. When she finally entered, she noticed him registering her by the light in his eyes. His eyebrows raised and the curve of his mouth lifting. "Hi there." The blonde smiled shyly, "I like your suit."
Her own green eyes travelled over his expensive looking, dark suit. He had changed his Royals and Blues to a more comfortable attire. She couldn't help but think that he still looked as handsome as the first time she had laid her eyes upon him at St Paul's.
He stood up, his long legs stretching underneath him, watching how she closed the door behind her to give them both some privacy. "You look-" He wanted to continue his speech, tell her how beautiful he looked for what seemed the hundred time today but he stopped when he noticed the familiar headpiece resting on top of her hair.
He swallowed the lump in his throat, realizing this was the first time he had seen somebody wear it in real life after his mother passed away.
"Do you like it?" She timidly asked, watching his eyes roaming over the many diamonds and pearls upon her head.
"I-I, I don't know what to say for a minute. I thoug-"
"It was supposed to be a surprise. Your grandmother allowed me to have it tonight." She carefully scanned his expression, hoping he wouldn't be mad.
"Well, it, it's definitely a surprise." He shook his head a little bit, blinking at the image of his now, wife in front of him.
"A good one?" She asked uncertainly.
"An excellent one. You look- You look astonishing with it. It fits you." He smiled curving his arms around her shoulders. "Just when I thought I couldn't love you more." He mumbled, holding on to her, feeling the weight of her head against his shoulder.
She curved her arms around his waist, taking a deep breath. She could smell the same cologne she had smelled on their first date. Fire, wood, a hint of spice and something that now smelled like home somehow. "Are you ready for tonight?" She mumbled.
"I'm ready for tonight and all of the other nights to come." He closed his eyes for a second, just enjoying her warmth against his.
She smiled, taking a step back to look at him. All freckles and all teeth, he smiled and the world forgot to turn for a moment. Whatever souls were made of, she felt like his was made of the same thing as hers. "I love you."
"I love you too. So much."
The silence was tender as they smiled to one another for a moment or two. "You ready to say hello and get the party started?" She grinned, the light still evident in her eyes.
"I'd rather run away with you. Somewhere where our only responsibility is loving one another."
"Mexico?" She grinned, holding back laughter.
"Mexico sounds nice." He chuckled, throwing back his head.
"And sweety, loving one another may not be our only responsibility but it is our most important one. And the easiest one." The blonde grinned, wrapping her hand around his wrist. She pulled him in a brief kiss and wanted to let go but he stopped her. Curving his arm around her waist, pulling her closer. She felt herself groan underneath his touch and when he finally let go, her skin felt empty.
She heard him take a deep breath, his eyes once again travelling from the tiara on top of her head to that beaming, wide smile he had gotten used to in the past years. "They're probably waiting for us."
"Mmm." She batted her eyelashes at him, still holding on to his hand. "Let's go."
When they finally stepped back out into the corridor, she noticed James waiting outside the door to escort them to the ballroom. They walked in silence, which was comforting and spoke for itself. There were no words needed. It was peaceful in a way you could feel like home and no matter what happened, they were there with one another.
When their feet finally stopped in front of the door, Evee could hear the noise behind it. People talking animatedly, children laughing, soft music in the background. Her eyes turned towards Harry's once again as she felt him squeeze her hand. "We don't have to hold back here anymore."
"No." She agreed, a smile upon her face.
"Now everybody, let's give a big round of applause for the Duke and Duchess of Clarence and Avondale, Mister and Misses Henry of Wales, better known as Harry and Evee!" She heard a familiar voice shout through the microphone and immediately knew it was Skippy.
The door's opened in front of them and she couldn't help but laugh when she noticed everybody was throwing confetti at them. She tried to avoid the personal attacks made by Chloe and Mathias as best as possible, laughing in the meantime. "Stop! Stop!" She laughed, noticing that Harry got it way worse than she did. Guy and Thomas were actually stuffing confetti in his suit.
Her hands protectively made their way towards the tiara, making sure it didn't go anywhere. Luckily, Anna had placed it well upon her hair. When everybody eventually calmed down and they made their way towards the main table, she couldn't wipe the grin off her face.
There was a dancefloor in the middle of the room. Round tables were placed around it strategically. The centerpieces were beautiful, they were white with lilies. The room was dimmed and there were many candles. It held a romantic sphere. Her direct family sat at their table, it was the only one that wasn't round. Harry's father and Camilla sat on his side, along with his brother and Catherine and the kids.
She knew Chloe had asked to be seated with the younger group, along with Mathias, Jared, Emilia, Margot and Harry's close friends. When they finally approached their seats, she noticed William actually tapping his glass, shushing everybody in the room. He shrugged his voice and stood up, his gaze adverting over the whole room and finally stopping upon his brother's and his new wife. "I think it is time for us to first do the speeches and then we'll head on to dinner." William grinned.
Evee could feel Harry's hand resting over her thigh on the wedding dress. "I'm William. Harry's best man and also his older brother. I think it says a lot about a man when he chooses his brother to be his best man... Mostly, of course, it says 'I have no friends'.
As a brother and as supporting man, I am entitled to give the most embarrassing speech there is and I hope I will be able to fulfill this heavy- but pleasant task none the less." The room laughed at William, he tried holding back a grin himself.
"First of all, I just wanted to say, seeing the happy couple walking down the aisle earlier today, I'm sure we all agree that the bride looked simply stunning." William turned towards Evee with a kind smile and then he turned towards his brother. "The groom, on the other hand, simply looked stunned."
Evee threw back her head in laughter along with the rest of the room. "Harry was born on the 15th of September, 1984. My parents had wanted a girl... and let's be honest, they very nearly got one. Harry took his little brother role very seriously as a kid. He was determined to do what was expected of him. So he beat me up, blamed me for everything he broke, stole my stuff, sabotaged my plans and generally made life unbearable. Anyway, it's a great honour to be giving this speech today... or as I call it, payback."
William paused a little, scanning the room with a smile and ignoring Harry's red cheeks. "From the outset, I was always the perfect son, while Harry was deemed to be something of a wild child. It's painful to admit, but if we hadn't been brothers, he was the sort of kid Mum and Dad would have told me not to play with."
The room laughed once again, listening intensely to William's speech. "As Harry's big brother, I've known him his entire life. Often it's the younger sibling who feels he has to live up to his older brother, but with us it's the other way around. Harry is kind, loving, loyal, hardworking and ambitious. He's the one I look up to... That's one way of looking at it, anyway. Another is that I was just trying to keep the bar low for him so he wouldn't feel pressured. No need to thank me, dude." William grinned at his brother who shook his head.
"We're very different people, Harry and I. He like comedies, I'm a reality film fan. He's impulsive, I'm a planner. I hate tomatoes, Harry doesn't know a recipe without them. We have been through so many things together; my little brother is my solid rock. The loss of our mother was one of the hardest tasks we've ever faced. Harry, I know mum would have been so very, very proud of you. Just as much as I am." The room silenced as Harry and William shared a meaningful look. William shrugged and turned his eyes towards the paper in his hand.
"But there's one thing we both agree on, though. Meeting Evee was the single best thing that has ever happened to him in his life."
"When Harry met Evee at that one particular engagement, I'm sorry but I have to do this." William looked at the couple with a held back grin and then turned his face towards the crowd. "Did you know she didn't even recognize him? She first thought he was Ed Sheeran." Evee's eyes widened, as she covered her blushing cheeks in her hands, shaking her head in embarrassment. "It was the beginning of change. Harry laughed more, seemed more content, he spoke of her with love in his eyes. Whether it was through her beaming smile or her odd- but hilarious sense of humour, it brought a new dimension of happiness to him that I hadn't seen before. But having got to know Evee's family a bit more in the recent weeks, I now understand where that happiness comes from.
In fact, tonight I see two very happy families coming together. Whether they are British or Belgian, it all revolves around the same thing; coming together for love and mutual respect. And I think you would all agree that there's a lot of that in this room today, and I think you'd also agree that there's a lot of that between Harry and Evee.
So let's all raise our glasses to the happy couple. I wish you nothing but the best.
Now, we really hope there will be ginger babies. I'm kidding, Harry told me to put that in there. Let's hope for any babies. Cheers!" The whole room laughed, raising their glasses at the crown prince.
Immediately after William hugged his brother and Evee, the blonde watched how Chloe ticked her own glass, looking around the room nervously. "Oh god, are they all going to do their speeches now? I'm not sure if I can handle it." The blonde whispered in Harry's ear, noticing his eager grin.
"My worst one is over, I'm excited to hear yours. This should be the best one." He teased.
"Shut up." She mumbled, grabbing her fork and poking it into his leg.
"Aw! You little-"
"Sshhh." She jokily grinned, turning her attention to her maid of honor.
Chloe grabbed the paper in front of her and eyed Evee, giving her an encouraging smile. "She's going to cry." Evee whispered in Harry's ear.
"Hello, everybody. For those who don't know me, my name is Chloe Jameson. You might know me as the one who gave Harry Evee's phonenumber. No need to thank me by the way." Chloe grinned, looking at them both. "Evee and I have known each other for a while now, we used to be colleagues before this knight in shining armour swept her off her feet." Chloe grinned at Harry. "If you want me to describe my best friend, I can only simply state that there are no two Evee's. She is unique. I was there the day Harry visited to hospital and saw those two interact for the very first time." Evee prayed to God, she didn't go into further details. "I remember the day I dragged her to that polo match as if it was yesterday. Let me tell you right now, she was not feeling it that day. I actually had to pay her money to actually stay longer." Evee ignored Harry's questioning eyes at her, biting her inner cheek. Okay, so she never told Harry that part. Chloe took a deep breath, trying to hold back the tears forming in her eyes. "I have known you, Evee, for a long time now and throughout the years, you've come to mean everything to me. We've been there through the hardest times of our lives at the hospital. We've had emotional and mental breakdowns and a whole lot of hangovers -but that was usually on your end -" The room laughed and the bride couldn't help but beam at her friend, holding back a grin and a small blush. "We've shared a lot of tears and a lot more laughter and I know I wouldn't be the person I am today without you, Evee. I am so proud of the person you have become. I am so proud that love always wins. Harry, I'm giving up a lot today. Eveline was my buddy, my colleague, she was my rock but she choose true love over the single life with me. I couldn't be more happier for the both of you. Harry better take care of her because she's special, so special."
Evee tried to whipe away the one solo tear escaping her right eye as quickly as possible.
"Evee, you know I'm a little tainted about relationships right now, but you guys give me hope that when two people really love each other, nothing can keep them apart. I read somewhere that love is a friendship that has caught fire. May your fire stay strong and bright and filled with love and laughter for the next 50 years or so." Chloe raised her glass at the couple as the room applauded.
Evee stood up, holding her arms open so Chloe would know that she was asking for a hug. The girl immediately walked towards her, throwing her arms carefully around her neck. "You know I wish you nothing but the best." The blonde heard Chloe mumble in her ear.
"I know. I love you." Evee nodded her head, "You've probably made my make-up run."
Chloe took a step back, watching her friend's face and replied with a held back smile, "Her Royal Highness' make-up is still very much intact." The blonde couldn't help but roll her eyes, "Although I doubt it will be when your husband finishes his speech."
"What?" Evee looked a little confused and finally noticed Harry standing up, looking at her with an expecting, sweet smile.
"Sit." Chloe instructed pushing her friend back towards her seat.
Evee managed to do so and look up, watching how Harry cleared his throat. "This is the last one for now, I promise." Harry joked, looking around the room. "First of all, my beautiful wife and I want to thank everybody for sharing the most wonderful day of our lives with us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
Evee smiled, a little taken back when Harry finally turned his blue eyes upon hers, noticing how they adverted quickly to the tiara upon her head and then back to her own green ones. "Evee-" She swallowed roughly when he bit his lip, "I'm at loss for words at how beautiful you look today, although that is even a severe understatement. You are beautiful because of that sparkle in your eye when you talk about something you love. You are beautiful for your ability for making other people smile, even if you are sad. I laugh harder with you. I feel more myself with you. I trust you with me- the real me." He swallowed the lump in his throat, never breaking eye contact when he saw her tearing up. "When something goes wrong, or right, or I hear a funny joke, or I see something bizarre, you're the first person I want to talk to. When I think of you, it literally makes me smile. When you speak, it's always so genuine. Everybody can feel how sincere you are, how sweet you are."
He took another deep breath. "However when you laugh, something incredible happens to me, as if my heart warms up. I want to always be there when you tell a cheesy joke. Let's not forget, that I just want to be there constantly when you need someone to talk to. When you need that shoulder to cry on at 2am in the morning. I want to be that best friend for the rest of our lives. Because you are mine. You are my best friend, you are my wife now, my companion, my soul. "
The room silenced for a minute when Harry took a deep breath, taking her hand in his as she gratefully smiled at him, at loss for words. "I feel so honored to be your husband. So grateful that you're by my side. Thank you for marrying me and making me the happiest man alive and for loving me as much as I love you. I know this is the start of many, many happy years together and I honestly, this is the most exciting I've ever been in my entire life. The thought of starting this journey, with you next to me, God it just... It's just wonderful. I can't believe I got to be so lucky.
I'm so glad I had the nerves to pick up that phone and ask you on a date. I'm so glad I've never stopped fighting for you. So glad I always, always thought you were the one. I know there's someone up there, with a smile upon her face, telling me I'm one lucky man." The room got quiet as Harry seemed to pause, swallowing a lump in his throat as his wife searched for his hand and gave a comforting squeeze. "My mum would have adored you." He nodded, speaking a little more quietly.
He smiled, shaking his head, trying to catch his words back again. "Thank you for everyone who has supported my incredible nerves this morning, in particular you, Will, your comforting banter means more to me than you could ever imagine." Harry quickly made eye contact with his brother, both understanding each other through merely eyecontact.
"So Ladies and Gentlemen, please be upstanding, for the most important toast I'm ever likely to make, to my Wife, my bride and my absolute world, to Evee. I love you Evee."
She quickly whipped away the solo tear escaping her eye and stood up, her arms wrapping around him in a tight embrace. "I love you too." She whispered before finally crashing her own lips against his, not caring about one single person watching.
