Chapter One Hundred - Part Five

After the speeches, dinner was served. Evee thought it was absolutely delicious. The menu started off with a Jerusalem artichoke soup with chestnut. She remembered her past strategy that when she was actually at a restaurant, she shouldn't eat that much soup. She would already be full before the real thing actually started. The soup was good,  excellent even, but she only had a small cup. The lobster linguini pasta with truffle was amazing, the seared scallop with trumpet mushroom afterwards even better.

The best part however, was a dish she would never get tired of. She absolutely adored beef wellington, so when the wedding party didn't think it was 'that sophisticated' Harry and her seemed to gotten along instantly when it came to the main course. It wasn't as if the guests couldn't choose themselves, the  choice was beef wellington with parsley mashed potatoes and bone marrow or braised halibut with Dorset crab.

The classic floral, white wedding cake was the top of the bill though. The chocolate ganache  filled vanilla cake was so rich, it was unlike any other cake she had ever tasted before. As tradition held, the top of the cake wasn't cut as they gracefully swooped it up and placed it in an elegant looking golden box. "You know why they do this, don't you?" Harry spoke with a  twinkle in his eye.

"I can take a good guess, yes." She grinned,  eyeing the top layer being taken away. She knew the top layer would be stored for when their first child would be christened.

The cutting of the cake held a lot of symbolism. Harry and Evee posed for  pictures as she gently held on to the knife, cutting into the bottom piece of the cake. It was already 10.30pm and the party only had to start. Evee knew most of the elderly group of Harry and her family would retrieve themselves. It had been a long day after all. She also knew, merely by the fact that Mathias and Margot had that familiar blush upon their cheeks, the younger party was far from going home.

She couldn't help but be deadly exhausted already. She never stood in the way of a festivity but today had been a wonderful, but tiring event. For the first time in her life, Evee wanted to abandon this party, take her  husband home, make love to him and then fall asleep in his arms.

After eating the dessert, she knew she had to say hello to the people she hadn't spoken to yet. Her own feet dragged her towards the table where Chloe sat with her own friends from home. "Are you having fun?" Evee  cheekily asked, looking at everyone around the table. Harry was talking to her cousins across the room, eyeing her with a sheepish grin.

"Yes,  yes we are." Mathias grinned, throwing his arm around Chloe's chair.  "And it's only getting started. Excellent meals by the way."

"I'm glad you liked it." Her eyes scanned the table, stopping at that familiar patch of blonde hair. He looked happy, a content smile upon his face. Her green eyes registered the way his hand rested upon a pretty brunette. The young woman seemed to notice Evee's presence and couldn't help but be nervous.

Melanie's reaction to her boyfriend  announcing that they would be invite to the royal wedding was mainly laughter. She did not believe him. He had always joked that he knew Eveline Delamane, that she used to be a close friend. That she still was his friend.

Jared had always been protective of the blonde, he would not toss around private pictures of the past. She was practically his  little sister. So no, he did not tell his new girlfriend about Evee and her escapades. He joked about it sometimes, but he knew the petite brunette laughed it off. It wasn't until he placed the invite underneath her nose that her  mouth widened in realization.

He had not been kidding.

"Did you like the menu?" Evee smiled politely, looking at the brunette. "I didn't catch your name, I'm sorry?"

"Evee!" Jared grinned, eager to introduce his girlfriend. "This is Melanie. Melanie, this is Evee."

"Thank you for inviting me, Your Royal Highness." The brunette stuttered and Evee couldn't help but awkwardly avert her eyes towards Jared, who threw his head back in laughter.

"Please, it's Evee." She gave Melanie a beaming smile.

"I'm never going to get used to the fact that you're royalty now." Jared  laughed, shaking his head. The blonde grinned, almost ready to throw a  piece of cake at her old friend. She took the nearest seat, planting herself next to Jared and his girlfriend, slowly sipping from her champagne. "You have a husband now." Jared scrunched his nose in a playful matter. "A little weird."

"Bet you didn't think that was going to happen soon, eh?" Evee grinned at the brunette still nervously smiling at her. "We used to be wild childs, Jared, me and Fr-" She  realized she hadn't thought of him the entire day. She shrugged, forcing a smile. "Freddy."

"Your friend Freddy? We sat next him to at St Paul's." Melanie politely spoke.

The blonde couldn't help but raise her eyebrows, her heart beating in her throat. Freddy was at St-Paul's? She hadn't seen him in over a year and a half. She invited him, purely because she also invited Jared. She did  not think he would come. The cathedral was packed, she did not see him.

But apparently, he saw her.

"He was there." Jared spoke, eyeing Evee who nodded her head. "He thought it was a beautiful ceremony."

"Yes." She shook her head, "Yes, of course."

"He wishes you the best. You know he cares." Jared mumbled, placing his hand over Evee's.

"How is he?" She wondered in interest.

"He's well." Jared slowly nodded his head. "I don't see him as much but Melanie gets along with Lisa quite well so we get together sometimes."

"Lisa?"

"Fred's girlfriend. He's been seeing her for about eight months now." Jared spoke, taking a sip of his beer.

"I'm glad he's finally settling down." Eveline spoke, "He deserves someone who makes him happy."

Jared carefully let his eyes roam across the blonde's face, searching for any kind of emotion. He didn't see any jealousy, nor disappointment but there was underlying sadness there. He knew her too well to not see through her poker face. "Give him a call, alright?"

"Erh, I don't think so Jared. Things are good as they are. I'm leaving for Finland in two weeks, I have too many things to think of that I don't need this. " Evee sighed. "Plus Harry and him... You know and I love Harry, I love him so much."

"You almost sound like you have to defend yourself." Jared mumbled, leaning his head closer to hers so no one would hear.

"I don't have to defend myself for anybody." She shrugged, "I'm saying that if he's happy, I am."

"Good."  Jared slowly nodded his head. He tried to avoid the awkward silence. "Good. So... When can I expect an announcement on a royal baby?" He grinned, his eyes shifting towards her  flat stomach.

"Please." Evee rolled her eyes, happy to change to  subject. "One thing at the time. I don't want to rush anything, let's just take it sl-" The bride wanted to continue her speech but noticed Skippy making his way towards the stage, a little wobbly on his feet. He  grabbed the microphone and ticked it with his right ringer. Immediately the room stilled at the sudden loud knocks came through the speakers.

"I would like to invite the bride and the groom to be the first one to step upon this dancefloor." Evee knew Harry and her had to do their first dance now and when she watched him straighten his legs to walk  towards her, he offered her his hand. She beamingly smiled upon him,  placing her own manicured fingers against his. "Let's have a round of applause for the Duke and Duchess of Clarence and Avondale." Skippy  grinned as everybody seemed to clap.

She followed him swiftly towards the dancefloor, ignoring everybody's stares as soft music took over the dark room. When she heard the familiar sounds of the song she had heard a dozen times on the radio before, Evee couldn't help but grin. She felt Harry place his arms around her waist, gently resting them on her lower back. Her own were wrapped around his neck, touching the bare skin of his neck. She could feel him lower his head against the  crook of her neck, his own breath tickling her skin with every word  spoken through the song.

When your legs don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks

He closed his eyes for a minute, unconsciously smelling her strawberry  shampoo. It remembered him of their first date, the one where they climbed up that tree at Primrose Hill. The way she had so softly placed her own head against the crook of his shoulder. He had curved his arm around her neck in reply, it was the first time he smelled her hair. The  smell, the odor took him back to that very first date.

"What are you grinning about?" She softly whispered, holding back a wide smile. She could feel his lips against her collarbone.

"Just memories." He mumbled, through the music. Their feet softly slow  dancing. For a moment she felt like Audrey Hephburn, Harry was Fred Astaire and they were dancing by that beautiful pond underneath that oak tree.

And darling I will be loving you 'til we're 70
And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23
And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe just the touch of a hand
Oh me I fall in love with you every single day
And I just wanna tell you I am

"Good ones?" She questioned, feeling his heart against her chest.

"The best ones." He breathed against her neck. She was real. She was the sky. Her  thoughts and dreams so blue and bright as the day. She had the sun in her eyes and a heart bigger than the moon. Her inner strength so dark as the night, powered by the shiniest stars. Either way, she was the most beautiful mess that he had ever come across.

So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
Maybe we found love right where we are

"Is that so?" She whispered in his ear, feeling the touch of his fingertips against the satin of her dress. It didn't even matter that her mother was taking pictures in the background, trying the dry her reddened eyes.  He was hers. He was the man. She had ripped her beating heart out of her chest and placed it in his trembling hands. She had told him it was  his. It would always be his.

"I'm thinking about our first date."  He smiled, placing a soft kiss against her skin. He felt her react immediately as goosebumps appeared.

When my hair's all but gone and my memory fades
And the crowds don't remember my name
When my hands don't play the strings the same way, mm
I know you will still love me the same

"Really,  Harry of Snails?" She grinned, shuffling her feet along with his. He couldn't help but laugh softly, throwing his head back. A comfortable silence fell upon them as Ed Sheeran softly sang the lyrics in the  background.

'Cause honey your soul can never grow old, it's evergreen
Baby your smile's forever in my mind and memory

She softly hummed along the song, her voice barely above a whisper as she closed her eyes. "I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in  mysterious ways. Maybe it's all part of a plan."

"I can't wait to  get out of here." He mumbled, his hot breath against her skin. "I just want to have some time alone. You and me."

I'll just keep on making the same mistakes
Hoping that you'll understand

She smiled, gently rubbing the soft patch of hair above his neck. "Wouldn't mind dancing under the northern lights with you, you know?" Evee  mumbled.

"Teaching you how to ski." She could hear his teasing voice.

"That should be fun, right?" She smiled, looking into his blue eyes as he pushed his head off her shoulder, a held back grin upon his face.

"Checked the insurance policy just in case last week." He mumbled, biting his cheek when she threw her head back in laughter. His eyes scanned her face, taking in every inch of it. A mess of a girl with the face of a Leonardo da Vinci angel. She was his Mona Lisa, his pride, his masterpiece. A picture coloured without precision, but so endearing and  addictive that he could not help but let his eyes roam.

He would never get sick of her.

But baby now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are, oh

She wasn't beautiful for something as temporary as her looks. He had hoped that in fifty years they would still be standing there, the same green eyes staring at him with love and that oh so familiar twinkle he had gotten used to in these past years. She would have wrinkles and her hair might not be the colour of the sun anymore, but he would always have  her smile. He would always have her eyes. He would always have her laughter and her cheeky comebacks.

Oh maybe we found love right where we are
And we found love right where we are

The song softly stopped in the background as his hand carefully placed itself on her cheekbone, lifting her lips upon his.

And she would always have him.
