Chapter Forty Two

It was Sunday morning when Evee woke up around ten o'clock. Chloe was lying on her stomach next to the blonde in bed, snoring the day away. Rubbing the sleepiness out of her eyes, the nurse groaned. She had a slight hangover. The boys and Chloe had spent the night, not wanting to leave her on her own. Throwing her feet over the edge of her bed, she stood up, ignoring the slight pounding in her head. They hadn't done anything bad, just watched some tv-shows with a couple (that was a lie) of beers.

The nurse hadn't heard from Harry the entire night (even though she never picked up her phone, she was silently glad he had kept trying). At one point, Chloe took away her cell, giving her another independent woman speech. Evee was an independent woman, she was sure of it but she was also in love with her lying boyfriend (Or was it ex-boyfriend now? She hadn't decided yet).

Dragging her feet towards her living room, she noticed Jared's sleeping form on the sofa. Rolling her eyes, she made her way towards her kitchen. Evee was surprised when she saw Fred, wide awake sitting at her kitchentable with a bowl of cereal. "You're up already?"

"I think I'm getting old, the bad tub's not doing it for me anymore."

"You do realize that your apartment, which includes your bed, is in this building?" She smiled, opening up a cupboard to take her own bowl.

"I know that." He mumbled. "I just like your place better, it's cozier." The blonde chuckled, quickly pushing her messy hair in a knot on top of her head. "Are you alright?" Fred looked at her closely as she added some Cheerios in her bowl.

"When I try not to think about it too much, yes then I'm alright."

"It'll get better in time." He spoke, stuffing another spoon of cereals in his mouth.

"What do you mean?"

"It might hurt now because the wound is fresh. Once you guys are officially finished, this whole storm can pass." Eveline looked at him in confusion. "You are... Planning on dumping him, right?" Fred noticed the way she didn't respond and adverted her eyes. "Are you actually joking? You're planning on keeping the idiot after what he's done?!"

"Look Fred-"

"So we're all just here until he does his best to show up and then you'll swipe us out of the picture once again?"

"Stop that. Stop that right now. I don't need another drama. You're creating a story in your head. And I have never swiped you, or any of you guys for that matter, out of the damn picture. Chloe has always been here, just as Jared. It was you who decided to stay away when I was with Harry."

"I didn't want him to get angry." Fred spoke, standing up straight to walk towards the kitchen sink.

"This isn't even about Harry anymore, is it? It would have always been something with ANYONE I would have brought home. You just can't stand the fact to see me with someone else. That's it, isn't it?" That was it, Evee realized. He's jealous. He was jealous of Harry. That's why he never came over. That's why he's being so supportive right now. She hadn't seen it before but things were clearing up. It's why he hated Harry so much.

Fred laughed at his neighbor in an unnatural way. "Sure it is Evee, haven't you heard? I'm unconditionally and irrevocably in love with you. Please let's get married and have three children, we can name one of them Henry." He spoke with loud sarcasm, dropping his dishes a little too roughly in the kitchen sink.

"Are you mocking me right now?" She stared at him in awe from the kitchen table. "This is typical."

"What's typical?"

"You! When we had sex, you never wanted a relationship, ever! You wanted to be free but still enjoy the candy and I fucking gave that to you. I gave everything until I met someone else and I fell in love with him. And then you fucking realized, shit it's too late."

"You're speaking nonsense."

"You know what- I just, I don't have the time nor the energy to do this. I have other things on my mind. Important things." Evee stood up, leaving her (nearly untouched) bowl of breakfast on the table and marching towards the bathroom.

"Very important  things, like in what position your boyfriend is screwing his ex for  instance." Fred knew he shouldn't have said it. He knew he was in the  wrong the moment he spoke those words.

It was worse because Evee didn't even get angry at him. Something she usually always did. She would throw a book at his head or shout. But not this time, when he spoke that sentence, she was walking towards the bathroom and when she finally heard the words, her feet abruptly stopped. Slowly turning around, Fred could see the tears in her eyes.

Shit, he had made her cry.

"Congratulations Fred. Are you happy now?" Her stilled voice spoke, making him cringe.

"Shit, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You know I'm an asshole. And you're right, I am probably jealous." He couldn't believe he was actually admitting it. "You know me more than anyone, I get into this defensive mode because I've always had a hard time showing my true feelings. I push people away because of it."

"I love Harry." Evee quickly wiped away her tears.

"I know you do, I know you love him. But he's a douchebag and an asshole. He screwed  you over. Big time Evee, you're in all the newspapers. People all over the  world are talking about this. He was in public when he kissed that ex of his, forgodsake!"  He marched towards her, putting his hands on her upper arms. He didn't blink once as he looked  right into her green eyes. "I'm not going to do that. I swear. I'm not going to screw you over."

"You've screwed me over a year ago, Freddy."

"No! I just. I didn't know what my true feelings were. I liked you. Of course I did, else I would have slept with other people, but I didn't. Come on, we can do this. You and me." He looked at her with a hopeful glance.

"Fred, I love Harry. I love that man. I can't just erase my feeli-" She didn't want to lie to him. She didn't. He was one of her best mates. She wanted to continue talking to him, get these ridiculous thoughts of them being together out of his head but there was a knock on her door.

She mentally counted the people in her apartment. Her family was still at home (god, she hoped they were). There wasn't anyone else... Unless it was one of Harry's friends.

"I'll get that for you." Fred spoke, leaving her in the middle of the living room. Jared was still dead asleep on the couch, he hadn't heard a thing. As soon as Fred's fingers touched the door handle and opened the door. He had to let it sink in who was standing right in front of him. He definitely didn't expect that. Fred also didn't expect to be met by a flying fist. Right in his left eye.

James, immediately turned into action, grabbing his friend and employee around the waist. He dragged him back in the hallway, trying to prevent any further damage. The security guy prayed to God that no one saw the prince attack the young man opening Evee's door. "You fucking son of a bitch." He heard the prince yell in his arms.

Harry had heard most of their conversation standing in the corridor. He had heard the guy trying to convince his girl to dump Harry, to be with him instead. It was that one sentence that Fred yelled at Eveline, the one  about her thinking in what position Harry would be 'fucking his ex'. It was  then that Harry knew he was going to punch that guy and he wasn't going  to regret a thing.

In the meantime, Evee heard the deafening noise coming from her hallway. What the hell? She immediately ran towards the door to find Fred on the floor, his hand covering a red and already swollen eye. Her eyes adverted towards two people struggling in the hallway.

Realizing who it was, Evee's eyes widened, "Harry?!"

"Eveline, can we please enter before anyone sees this spectacle and starts taking pictures?" James begged, still holding on to the angry ginger.

"Shit. Fuck. Yes, yes, come in." She immediately stepped out of the way. When they finally made it inside, Evee could hear James telling Harry to calm down. She crunched down to Fred. "Are you alright?!"

"That's the guy you're so in love with? Seriously?!" Fred was angry, it happened so quickly it totally caught him off guard.

"Calm down. Don't hit back, you would get into a lot of trouble." Evee tried to be the mature one, even though she was the victim.

"I want him to fucking pay. I want to hit him." The nurse looked over her shoulder to see Harry staring at the both of them. Even she had to admit that he looked like absolute crap. His eyes were bloodshot, he obviously hadn't slept these past days. The bags underneath his eyes said so as well.

"I will do that for you. Don't worry." She ignored the stares as she stood up and walked towards her freezer in silence. Evee's heart was pounding in her chest. She might have looked calm but there was rage and sadness inside of her. She was so mad at both of them. Quickly grabbing a bag of frozen peas, she made her way towards Fred. "Keep this on your eye."

"Evee... Can we talk? Alone? Please." It was the first time she heard his voice in almost a week, it was clammed up. He was pleading.

"You've hit my friend. You've cheated on me. You've humiliated me in front of the whole world." She stared at him, not once backing down. Her voice was strong, she didn't want to be the victim anymore. "Now you come here, uninvited, ignoring the fact that there might have been a chance that I do not want to talk to you. If I wanted to talk, I would have picked up the phone those 300 times you've called."

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. There's an explanation. I swear to god, I didn't cheat on you. Please, hear me out. Please. I love you, I love you so much." Harry's eyes were watering up. It was the first time she saw him cry. God, she hated when men cried.

Evee heard Fred chuckle sarcastically in the background as Harry begged. "Fred, get out and take Jared and Chloe with you."

"Evee-"

"I said get out. This is none of your goddamn business." She was done with their stupid territorial behavior. She didn't need anyone to save her. She was doing fine on her own.
