Chapter Forty Five
"Stop looking at me like that." Evee whispered, noticing the side glances and the held back smiles Harry gave her. He looked like a kid being caught in a candy store.
"Like what?" He mumbled as the priest kept talking through.
"You know what I'm talking about." She could feel people staring at them, she knew it was because of Harry but somehow she also knew it was because they were spotted in public, together.
Somehow, people couldn't wrap around it their heads. One month ago those horrible pictures came out, they honestly thought Harry didn't deserve a second chance. One month of radiosilence, not one picture spotted of the couple together, not one word of the palace and now suddenly, they were there at Skippy's wedding, like nothing happened.
"No idea." He replied shortly with a grin on his face.
She tried holding back laughter herself but failed and it came out like a snort, receiving angry glances from the people around them.
Harry looked at her in fake anger and shushed her. "Yeah shhh." Evee her mouth widened at him as he grinned and turned his attention towards the couple in the front.
Lara did look stunning. She wore a simple, satin white gown. Something that really fit her and her personality. Her shoulders held it up with just two small spaghetti straps. The ceremony was short (although Evee thought that was because they were late themselves) and soon they were standing outside throwing rice at the couple. Harry kept aiming it at Skippy's face and at one point he just walked up to him and poured the bag of rice over the poor man's head. He only received a, "Wait until it's your turn!" Threat. Harry and Evee congratulated the couple, laughing the comment away (although Harry had a touch of fear in his face).
The church wasn't on the private property so the wedding party were brought there in a a few oldtimer busses. Waiting outside to step in, she couldn't help but notice one person taking a picture of them. Ignoring it all together (she knew Harry had seen it already, his eyes were way quicker than hers in that department), she saw her boyfriend waving shortly at someone. Evee's green eyes followed his as they landed on a familiar blonde she had now seen way too many times in the papers.
The South-African beauty that was famous because of her dating history.
Harry's ex.
Just smile, Evee. She hoped the woman wouldn't come over, they were still in public and Evee knew how many eyes it would attract.
She was pretty in her long yellow dress. She looked older than the pictures Evee had seen her in. The blonde's eyes fell on Evee and she could see Chelsy giving her a smile. Evee nodded her head back, silentely trying to hold back the urge to go up to her and ask her what actually happened that night.
Calm down, Evee.
Right.
How the hell could she calm down when Harry's ex was making her way towards them?
When she finally stopped in front of the couple, she had a big smile up on her face. Bigger than Evee's anyways. "Hello!"
"Hey!" Harry smiled, a little concern holding his features. "I want you to meet someone. This is Eveline, Evee, this is Chelsy."
"It's so nice to finally meet you! Harry's told me so many lovely things about you." She grinned, leaning her head forward and pressing a kiss on Evee's right cheek.
Evee had to admit, she was a little taken back. She at least thought the girl would ignore her for the first fifteen minutes but she didn't. She went straight up to them. "Nice to meet you as well."
"It was a good ceremony, wasn't it?" Was Evee the only one noticing the attention the crowd was giving them? She knew she couldn't be.
"It was beautiful." The blonde nurse agreed, feeling Harry wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her closer.
She obviously wasn't the only one seeing the cameras.
"We should actually go inside the bus. You're coming to the reception, right?" Harry spoke. The wedding's reception was going to take place a little later, the wedding party itself would be tonight.
"Of course, of course. Wouldn't miss it in the world. Can we have a chat, later on?" Chelsy her eyes fell on Evee's with a questioning look.
"Sure" Evee nodded her head, forcing a small smile.
When the South-African blonde left, Harry whispered in her ear. "That went well."
"I didn't expect her to just walk up to me." Evee spoke, stepping into the bus. "Definitely not in a public place."
"I honestly was surprised myself. I think she really wants to sort this out. She'll want to talk about the pictures." He mumbled, placing himself next to her on a seat. "Maybe it's not a bad thing that people see us three in public."
"Yes." Honestly, she didn't really know how to reply to that. She was still taken back.
Part of her wanted to make things right with Harry, they were so good together and he had really shown regret. It was that simple, she loved him so much, if he would walk out of her life, he'd take a piece of her with him. She honestly didn't know how she would have to begin to cope.
The other part, the self respecting woman, the one that never let men mess with her, was cursing. Shouldn't she have a say in all of this? Shouldn't she be the one who could decide when she was ready to talk to Chelsy? Shouldn't she be the one who could say if she wanted their pictures to be taken in public? In some circumstances, she really felt like a puppet, being dragged into this show without an actual string to play for herself.
She was so confused.
"You'll be alright, then?" Harry was a little concerned. She seemed calm now, a little too calm. His girlfriend was a lot of things but being predicatable wasn't one of them.
"Of course." She smiled, trying to shake out all her thoughts, resting her handpalm on top of his knee.
Harry wasn't so sure himself. He watched her stare through the window the entire ride, obviously deep in thought.
When the bus arrived at Thomas his former home, Evee was astonished, the house was almost the size of Kensington Palace for crying out loud. Did Harry even have normal friends?
The property was beautiful though. The driveway was long with trees on either side of it, leading them up towards the mansion. If her eyes didn't betray her, she could see a lake in the distance. "Wow. Harry, this house is gorgeous."
It really was, it had an old fermette style but it still looked rich. The lawn was huge and there were flowers everywhere. "Do you like these kinds of houses?"
"How can you not like this? It looks perfect." She always had a thing for the old classics, never liked the big white blocks at home that many 'modern' doctors now lived in. It looked cosy and homy. "A little on the big side but I like the vibe."
"It's been in his family for centuries. I think they restored it 26 years ago. You'll have to ask Skippy."
"They did a good job."
"Would you like to live in a house like that? Maybe in the future?" He couldn't help but ask. He noticed how her eyes stared at the flower beds.
"What are you talking about?" She turned her face from the window towards her boyfriend and looked at him in confusion. "I could never afford this with my nursing job." She chuckled.
"Not now... But maybe later on... Maybe we can get one of those in the future. Live in the country." He shrugged but still looked dead serious. He decided to not get into the whole money, quit your job to be my wife talk just yet.
She chuckled, "You're mental."
"Maybe. Maybe not." He smiled at her, silentely hoping that one day it might actually happen. God, he couldn't wait for it. He silentely counted the windows, he was sure he could story plenty of kids in a home like that.
When they finally stepped out of the bus, Evee was still in awe. Around the house, at the back, there was a big white (quite expensive looking) tent. Two hundred feet away, there was a huge swimming pool, around it were high top tables and a bar. The reception was obviously going to take place in the outdoors. The party itself, tonight, was in the tent.
"They did good." Evee spoke, noticing people in tuxedos going around with champagne. "Oh! I see Emilia!" Finally, a familiar face, she couldn't be happier.
"William and Kate are also coming tonight." Harry spoke, following his girlfriend. They couldn't make it this afternoon because they had some appointments.
"Really?" She replied with a grin. "It's been a while since I saw them. I've missed them. Oh, I'm dancing with your brother!"
"Good luck with that, the man has two left feet." Harry spoke, laughing at Will and how she'd regret her request in a couple of hours.
When Emilia spotted Evee and Harry, a smile formed on her face. She knew they'd be alright in the end. "Look at you guys! Happy and smiling!" Evee knew she already had too much champagne, judging by the way she spoke. She had already seen the woman drunk twice, she knew the drill.
"And look at you, pretty and slightly drunk!" Evee grinned, teasing the brunette.
"I love Tom and Lara but man I hate weddings." She mumbled, "Expect the champagne, I like the champagne."
"We notice." Harry grinned at his friend, taking a sip from his own glass.
"So Chloe's Harry-is-an-ass-but-we're-still-looking-fly-mission worked?" Emilia ignored Harry and turned her attention towards Evee, who now had a shocked face and wide eyes.
Harry was not supposed to know about that.
"The what?" Her boyfriend looked at the both of them with a confused expression.
"Nothing." Evee quickly gulped the remains of her glass in her throat, looking anywhere but at Harry. "I'm going in search for a restroom and then I'm going to talk to Skippy's dad, ask him about the house." She managed to pull herself away from the group, having a hard time holding back laughter at Harry's suspicious face.
She was about to enter the house when she felt someone tapping her shoulder. Confused, Eveline turned around. In front of her stood Chelsy, once again. It seemed as if she just couldn't escape the girl. It was worse when she seemed genuinely friendly, there was a smile upon her face. "Hi." The girl managed to give her a shy wave.
"Hello." Evee gave a slight nod, not sure how to behave.
"Can we talk?"
"Sure."
"I can beat around the bush for minutes but we both know about these stupid pictures and the drama involving them." The girl sighed, a little intimidated by the short nurse in front of her. She did not look happy. "But I swear, Harry and I. There's nothing, absolutely nothing going on."
"That's good. I would appreciate it if you kept your hands to yourself then, if nothing is going on." Evee couldn't help herself. She knew she had to be friendly but it came out way too quickly. She didn't want to be mean but everytime she looked at the woman she could see her wrapped around her man.
She knew that Harry was the main character. She shouldn't be mad at her, Harry had the girlfriend, not her. Plus they had worked everything out, it was all a misunderstanding. But god, it was hard standing in front of the woman and Evee had never been the best actress.
"I know it looked a little odd." Chelsy had to admit one thing, the girl was fierce. She did not hold her tongue but she could understand why. If she were in her shoes, she'd probably do the same, with a less scarier stare.
"A little odd?"
"Okay, it looked like we were doing stuff. I admit it. But we didn't I swear to god, there's nothing between Harry and I, we're just good friends. I wish him all the best."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything." Chelsy answered in all seriousness.
"Tell me exactly what happened and how they were able to get those pictures." Evee looked around, making sure nobody could hear them or take any pictures themselves. They were on a private property.
"The fact we ran into each other was pure coincidence. We had mutual friends and by surprise, we both ended up in the same cafe. I wanted to go light a cigarette. Harry was under a little stress, he was really anxious of leaving you in England to fend for yourself with the paps..." Chelsy spoke, Evee didn't think she was lying. By the tone of her voice she seemed to speak with honestly.
"I asked him if he wanted a cigarette as well, just to calm him down and he went outside with me. After a while I started to get cold, but I didn't bring a jacket. I didn't want to disturb Harry, he was actually talking about you. Telling me how great you were and how well you get along. I told him I was genuine happy for him."
Evee swallowed roughly, letting the girl continu.
"He saw me shivering and put the jacket on me. Harry chuckled, said come here, being his friendly self, I stepped into his hug, which only lasted 10 seconds. It didn't take long for me to get warm plus honestly, it felt a little odd. I didn't want anyone to get the wrong picture." She chuckled at her words. "Boy, I didn't think hell would freeze over right then and there. The "kiss" pictures was just because I didn't understand a sentence Harry spoke and I got closer to hear him better. The music was actually quite loud. There is actually nothing more to it. I think someone was in the bushes taking those pictures... We didn't see anyone with a cellphone or camera around us. I don't understand it myself how they got them."
Evee nodded her head, somehow she believed every word the girl said. It all made more sense now.
"I really wish I would have brought my jacket with me." Chelsy spoke, looking deeply sorry. "I am very sorry you had to go through all this crap just because I didn't. And out of all the people, I know exactly what it's like the chased and yelled at."
Eveline sighed, her fingers subconsciously rubbing her temple. "Yes. It's... It's, I can't even describe it. Is that the reason you guys broke up?"
"I'm not cut up for this life. I don't like people following me around and I hate all the royal crap involving around it." She didn't have to think twice to reply. "Harry's a good guy but we didn't think on the same line on many subjects."
Evee nodded her head, surprised that the girl actually opened up to her. "Harry's all for family, I'm a career woman. I don't want to have four kids and I can't even take care of my plants at home for crying out loud."
Evee had to laugh, holding her hand in front of her mouth to silence it a little. She noticed Chelsy laughing along. When she felt the girl's hand on her upperarm, Evee looked up at her. "I know how much these pictures sucked for you. I've been there Eveline, seriously. But they're not what they seem and they will always find something to talk about. Harry loves you very much. He told me himself. I don't want you to ever feel like you're not good enough. I've felt it for seven years and I'm finally in a happy place now." She smiled at the nurse. "Are you happy with him? Does he make you happy? Does this life make you happy?"
Evee didn't have to think twice to reply, "I love Harry. He definitely makes me happy. The life involving it... I honestly- I think I'd be able to endure it, if it means I can be with him, yes."
"You're doing a way better job than I did then. I hated every single moment of it. They're not making it easy on you, I've noticed." She looked at the Evee in concern. Chelsy had seen the attention the blonde nurse got in England and it made her sick looking at the footage. Flashbacks immediately came up, people shouting, pushing their cameras in your face.
"No. It definitely isn't easy, no." But Evee thought she handled it as well as could be expected.
"You're doing good."
"I try."
"Don't let him go, Evee- can I call you Evee?" Chelsy looked at her with a smile on her face.
"Yes, of course." Evee gave a smile back. Maybe the girl wasn't as bad as she thought she'd be.
"He'd be heartbroken. I'm pretty sure he has the whole family and house shit already lined up in his head." Chelsy laughed. "You sure you're ready for that?"
"I'd like to think I do... Not sure if one person can actually be totally prepared for it. I just know I wouldn't be dating him if I didn't love him and not see a future."
"Good. Good." Chelsy grinned. "Want to grab a glass of champagne then? This is a party to celebrate love."
"Well, I actually really need to take a piss first."
The tall blonde laughed at Harry's girlfriend, "I'll wait, you go."
She was dreading this conversation this morning, but was glad it happened. The fog in her mind was finally clearing out.
