Chapter Fifty Five

Evee had always thought that Fall, not Spring, was the time to clear  away dead leaves and branches to start new gardens. It was on one of  those perfect English November afternoons when the explosions of yellow  and orange against the blue sky made her feel like life was finally  settling down. Many dreaded fall, everything dying and shriveling on the  ground. She never did. Fall was one of her favourite seasons. The time  when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been  saving up all year for the grand finale. She had never been frightened  of it.

The boots on her feet dragged her through Hyde Park, every  once and a while kicking a fallen leave. People didn't really notice  her and the ones that did left her alone. She needed this walk. She  hadn't had a decent outdoor walk in ages. The hospital had been so busy  that she thought the permanent colour in her eyesight was white. She  needed the fresh air.

When her eyes finally rested on the many  tourists in front of Kensington Palace, she had to sigh. She had been in  there many times, too many to count now. She wondered if he were home,  he could look outside the window and see her. Smiling, she made her way  towards the secured entrance. It didn't take long for them to recognize  her. The staff had gotten used to the small blonde running around in  there. "Mrs Delamane, how are you today?"

"David, I've told you this before, call me Evee. I'm wonderful. Lovely weather, isn't it?"

"Very much so. Did you have a nice walk?" The young blonde man questioned.

"I did actually. Is Harry in yet?"

"His Royal Highness came home a half an hour ago. I told him you went for a walk."

Eveline nodded her head at David. "Thank you. See you later."

Pulling  her beanie firmly over her ears, she walked through the courtyard.  Finally reaching Nottingham's Cottage front door, she knocked. Surely,  Harry could open the door for her. After five minutes of waiting, she  turned around and headed towards 1A. She didn't have to wait long for  Kate to open it. "Hi! You wouldn't happen to know where Harry is?"

"Evee!  Hey, yes he's in here. Come in." The duchess, dressed in casual jeans  and a expensive looking knitted dark red sweater, stepped aside.  "Charles is here as well."

The nurse nodded her head, she had  already seen the prince of Wales many times so she wasn't nervous  anymore. There was a time her stomach turned by just the idea of sitting  with Harry's brother and father but it seems as if she was getting used  to the company. They had always been very pleasant towards her. The  blonde followed Kate towards the living room where she saw her boyfriend  sitting on the couch holding Charlotte in his lap. "Look who finally  decided to join us." Kate beamed with a smile.

Her eyes and  Harry's met and his face immediately lit up. He thought she looked very  cute in her Hunter wellies, beanie and black North Face jacket.  "Eveline! How nice of you to join us, how was that stroll?" Charles  asked enthusiastically.

"Marvelous, it's the perfect weather." Evee smiled, unzipping her jacket and taking off her beanie.

"It is. Camilla and I went for a walk this morning. Really enjoyed it. What quantity of fresh air can do, right?"

"Definitely."  She grinned, leaning in as Charles pecked her cheek. She quickly did  the same with William and then turned around towards the little girl on  her boyfriend's lap. Evee grinned as Charlotte raised her little arms.  "Hello. You want me to pick you up?" The blonde wrapped her arms around  the girl's body, lifting her into her arms.

Evee met Harry's blue eyes from a minute. He stood up and gave her a kiss. "Hello."

"Hi." She smiled warmly at him. "How was your day?" She had only seen him briefly this morning.

"Busy  actually. Glad to see you." She could feel his father, brother and  sister in law staring at them with lovesick eyes. It was getting a  little awkward now.

Nodding her head, she gave him a smile. "If I had known we were all getting together, I would've come earlier."

"Oh  no, it's just a coincidence we're all here. I had to give some  paperwork to William and father was already sitting in here." Harry  shrugged, mentioning to his girlfriend to take his spot on the couch  next to his father.

Evee sat down, placing Charlotte on her lap.  The girl was getting heavier each day. It amazed the nurse how quickly  she grew up. "Okay. Where's George?"

"He's with the nanny." Kate smiled. "You want something to drink?"

"I'll  just have some water, thank you." Evee watched as the brunette turned  around, making her way towards the kitchen to fetch a glass.

"How's  Camilla, Charles?" Evee spoke, turning around towards the man sitting  next to her. The nurse had heard from Harry that his stepmother was sick  last week. Apparently a bad pneumonia.

"She's better now,  thankfully. Couldn't keep her in the house no more, she was losing her  mind. That's why we went for that walk this morning."

"Ah well, a  little bit of fresh air won't harm her if she's dressed well enough."  The blonde watched as Kate brought back a glass of water for her. She  mumbled a quick thank you and took a sip. Watching how Harry managed to  plant his ass on the bannister of the couch right next her, she listened  how William spoke about his stepmother.

She thought once again  how nice her boyfriend and his brother were. She had been thinking these  past months about them both, about their history. Their mother, their  families. Harry hadn't spoke to her about it and she didn't want to  pressure him either. It was really none of her business. Yet she  couldn't help but think how good they were with their stepmother,  despite all of the things they had been through.

Evee loved his family.

But she sure would have loved to meet his mother.

She  wondered what the princess would think of her. Would she feel like she  wasn't good enough for her son? That she was maybe a little too much of a  rascal? She could sense that everything Harry did, was actually to make  his mother proud.

Evee couldn't help but think how difficult it  must've been for him. To see his father happy with someone who once made  his mother unhappy.

She wanted to listen to him and hear every  single story about his mother. She wanted to be that person he could  turn to. But he hadn't done that. Could she actually tell him that she  would listen to him? That she wouldn't tell a soul? That she wished she  would have been able to have met her?

Maybe.

When the time was right.

"Now  that we actually have you two together, we wanted to ask you guys a  question." William spoke, turning towards Evee and Harry.

Harry  looked a little confused at his brother. "You guys know that we're going  abroad to go to Scandinavia this winter and we actually wondered if you  were interested in watching the kids for us." Kate smiled, making eye  contact with Evee.

In response Evee tried to hide her scared  expression. How long would they be gone? Sure, she absolutely adored  George and Charlotte but having the full responsibility of the two was a  different story. She did not want anything to happen to these two.  "We're sure they will be in safe hands. Evee, I know you'll take care of  them like they're your own and you're a nurse so everything will be  alright."

Her boyfriend right next to her had a massive grin on  his face. "Yes! Yes! Of course, we'll do it! How long will you guys be  gone for?"

"Only five days, so it wouldn't be for that long."

"Only five? Can't you guys include a tour of Russia or something?" She watched how Harry scrunched his nose.

William  rolled his eyes, he knew his brother would be too excited. "Are you  alright with that Evee? We can still ask Kate's parents if you don't  want to."

"Oh no, I definitely want to! I'm just a little scared  I'll do anything wrong." She looked at William with a frightened  expression. Charlotte was actually playing with the nurse's beanie on  her lap.

"Eveline, you should be fine. Have some confidence,  these kids adore the both of you." Charles spoke, placing a hand on her  right shoulder.

"The nanny would still be around at daytime as well, Evee. It's just so they would be around family." Kate nodded her head.

Family?

They saw her as family?

Harry was family but she surely wasn't. Right?

"We don't need a nanny, right Evee? We'll do good. When are you guys leaving?" Harry spoke.

"It would be from December first to the fifth." William spoke, a smile forming on his face from seeing his brother to excited.

"We're  only doing it if it's okay with Evee. I'm not leaving these kids with  you alone. Someone needs to be responsible and feed them a decent meal."  Kate spoke.

"I can cook, you know. Plus, we have chefs and stuff around here." Harry rolled his eyes at his sister in law.

Kate  ignored Harry and turned her head towards the blonde, "We trust you. If  we didn't think you guys were up for the challenge, we wouldn't have  asked."

Evee smiled, ignoring her dry throat. "I'd love to help watch these little ones."

"Then it's settled then." The duchess clapped her hands together with a grin. "They'll have the time of their lives, I'm sure."

The blonde nurse took a big gulp of water, it didn't help her dry throat whatsoever.
