Chapter Eighteen

Evee got home around midnight. She knew she didn't have to get up early, so she grabbed the bottle of wine in the fridge, chucking the rest of it in a glass. Leaning against her kitchen counter, she took a sip, sighing as she closed her eyes. How did it go so fast? Sure, the girl had struggled with a little fever these last two weeks but she looked okay to her last friday. Did she overlook something? Could she prevented it from happening?

The nurse didn't know the answers. She'd probably never know them either.

She noticed the drawing she had placed on her kitchentable and picked it up, placing it on her refridgerator with a magnet. Looking closely, it was a good piece of artwork. Evee smiled, crooking her head, she knew Harry's hair wasn't that bright and he didn't have so many freckles but it was cute. She had even nailed the blue eyes plus the tiara . Maybe someone had helped her with the drawing...

She thought about calling Harry but decided against it. She didn't want to bother him. She hoped by leaving she hadn't messed up their relationship.

It wouldn't be worth it if he made a drama out of it.

He wouldn't be the right man for her. He had to understand. Somehow, deep down, she knew he would understand. She had noticed that he was a caring person. He knew her job meant a lot to her. Taking another sip from her wine, she took her cellphone out of her purse. She had a text message, "Call me when you get home xxx H"

Evee wasn't sure. Not because she didn't want to talk about it but she really didn't want to put any misery on his shoulders, plus it was already late. Deciding he was probably just worried, she dialled his number. It only took five seconds before he picked up. "Hey, are you okay?"

Evee shrugged, her throat burning, she couldn't cry anymore. "Okay is a big word but I'll pull myself together."

"I'm sorry."

"No, these things happen, it comes with the job. I should be able to proces it and move on." Evee explained, making her way towards the sofa and plunging down on it.

"Still, it can't be easy." Harry mumbled, surprised by how strong she sounded.

"It's not supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be worth it. If I just made her life a little better, it's all worth the pain." Evee knew she couldn't talk details but even though she hadn't told Harry it was Maja, she didn't have to. He had seen the look of worry in her eyes when she left. He had figured out the fact that it was indeed Maja by himself.

"I can understand. Will you be alright working tomorrow?"

"Yeah I should be fine, I've been through this before. I just don't feel like being alone too much, it makes me think about her. It's good that I have to work the next few days." Eveline explained, laying down on her couch, closing her eyes and enjoying his voice.

Now that she thought about it, it was the first time she had spoken (soberly) on the phone with him. It calmed her down immensely. He already seemed to have that effect on her. She had always enjoyed listening to the British community talk, the accent, the way the words flew out of their mouths; rapidly but still so sophisticated. Harry's voice wasn't any different, it was deep and caring, she could listen to it for hours. "When's your off day?"

"Friday, I have to work this weekend though."

"Can I see you then?" He asked, he actually had wanted to come over faster, but he didn't feel like pushing himself on her. He had wanted to stay tonight until she came back from the hospital, to hold her and comfort her and kiss her again but she had insisted he went to bed. He wouldn't have minded losing a couple of hours of sleep over her.

"Yeah sure, you can come over anytime you want. I have two late shifts tomorrow and wednesday. Thursday I have an early shift. You can come over thursdaynight if you want."

He couldn't keep down the enthusiasm in his voice, "That's good. I need to talk to you about a couple of things. I'm heading of to America next week, for the Invictus Games."

"The Invictus Games? The paralympic sports? With the soldiers?"

She knew about the Invictus Games? She didn't knew him but she knew of the games? "You know about that? I'm the founder of it."

"Really? That's amazing, Harry. My uncle used to be in the army, he told me about it. These games, they give so much back. It's not in London this year?" Eveline was impressed, she knew of the games, she called her uncle last year and he asked if she had spotted any soldiers in the London streets, she had asked why and he had explained all about it. He himself, wasn't wounded but he did want to go and support them.

"No, they're in Orlando."

"It must be so exciting for you." Evee explained.

"Yeah it is, we've worked hard for it. There's a lot of preparation."

"I can believe that. I hope you have a great time. How long will you be gone?"

"I'm back May thirteenth."

"That's almost two weeks." Evee mumbled, a little dissapointed. She had just met him and already, she had to miss him for quite some time.

"Yes, I know. But you know, there's a thing called technology. I can phone and text and skype."

Evee smiled, "You promise?"

"I promise" She heard the smile in his voice.

Then she thought about it, maybe being apart would be something good. She could overthink their relationship, she had to calm down and just think. Was this what she wanted? Being with a prince? Everyone knowing about her? There were a lot of responsibilities. She couldn't behave like she did in the past. If people knew who she was, she wouldn't be able to go to the pub on friday with her mates and get plain wasted. No dancing on tables, no barfights.

Eveline knew she had to grow up sometime. She was 25 for godsake, she couldn't keep cursing around, flipping people off. Would she throw it all away for him?

She wasn't sure honestly.

She didn't want to jump in, head first, just to lose her balance and fall flat on her arse. She would be heartbroken. It took her so long to get over Nathan. Damn, it took her moving to another country! How the hell would she be able to do it all over again?

"Maybe it will be good for us, just some time apart, to overthink things." Evee mumbled carefuly, she didn't want him to assume that she didn't like him because she did. It was only that what made her so scared.

"What do you mean?" Harry spoke with panic. Didn't she like him? Wasn't he a good kisser? Did that scare her off? Shit, he knew it was too early for that kiss.

"Nothing bad Harry, I just- this is a big deal, being with you. I wouldn't be only dating you, I'd be dating the rest of the world if word gets out."

Again, like many times before in his life, Harry cursed the media. "Look I really like yo-"

"No I like you too, Harry! That's not it. But I'm sure you want to be with someone who's prepared for this, mentally. I don't want to jump right in just so I can fall flat on my face. I want something real." Evee tried to explain.

"Don't you see that's exactly what I want. I've been waiting for this for almost 32 years." The only thing Harry was thinking was, don't blow me off, don't blow me off. He wanted her. He was interested in her the moment he saw her cursing around in that hallway and when he saw her in those blue scrubs, all embarressed, he knew how special she was.

"Don't you want to be with someone who knows what she's getting into then?"

"Of course." He couldn't help but agree with her. Someone who knew what he was about, someone that realized the impact of being with him yet still loved him, someone who was willing to give up a part of her privacy. It was all he ever wanted. Just for someone to love him the way he was. Someone to support him and be with him through difficult times.

"Then give me some time. Just to comprehend everything." Evee sighed, closing her eyes and rubbing her hands in them. She was tired, all these emotions had drained her out.

Harry couldn't do anything but swallow his pride. It was the first time a girl had asked him to give him time before they actually dated. Young Harry would have hung up. He would have banged another bird, just to forget this one. But he realized things had changed, he could give her time, if it meant she would be with him 100 procent, he could give her anything she wanted. "You're right. I can understand, this is a big deal for you. For us."

"Okay. Then I'll see you thursdaynight before you leave?"

"Wouldn't have it any other way."

"Okay. Sleeptight, Ed."

"Shut up Evee."

"Goodnight Harry."

"Goodnight Eveline."

With a smile she hung up the phone. She had a lot of things to think about.
