A Short Story Told from A-Z

After years of intense study, Jade became an archaeologist.

But the field was not everything she thought it would be.

Copying notes and writing up papers was one thing.

Digging up bones and artifacts, on the other hand, was much harder to do.

Everything she studied seemed worthless and unhelpful.

Frustrated, Jade considered quitting in favor of a simple desk job.

Going back now, however, seemed like a waste of her time and money.

Holding on to her values, Jade decided to keep on keeping on.

Itching for something worthwhile, she applied to every open dig-site she could find.

Jade looked and looked for an interesting job opportunity.

Katie, Jade's sister, finally directed Jade to an organization based in South America.

Little did Katie know, Jade had already seen their advertisement and thought about it.

Much to Katie's delight, Jade decided to follow through.

No one except Katie thought Jade was making a good decision.

"Operating in South America will not be comfortable or fun," some said.

People Jade did not even know tried to convince her into taking the simple desk job.

Quick to defend her sister, however, Katie rushed to support Jade's decision.

"Really, guys?" Katie would say, "No one said you had to go."

So the naysayers soon backed down.

Thanks to Katie's support, Jade finally felt confident in her chosen career path.

Under the warm South American sun, months later, Jade made a groundbreaking discovery.

Very old bones, still intact, could be found in large deposits beneath a popular lake.

Whether it was luck or determination that helped Jade find the site, she could not tell.

Xenophobia and fear of the unknown didn't get in her way anymore, though.

Year after year, Jade kept finding new artifacts.

Zero traces of anxiety remained about Jade's decision to be an archaeologist.
