Paper Keys
"Good as always." An elder lady hummed with satisfaction while eating an eclair. She was one of the many usual customers who always enjoyed the fresh and sweet pastries of the shop you ran by your lonesome.
A few other customers dined and chatted amongst themselves in the small shop only consisting of eight tables. It was quiet and calm until a small and unusual ruckus from outside occurred. You were unwilling to leave your post behind the counter despite the consuming curiosity. You leaned and stretched over the counter to look outside on either side of the large window that spanned the front form of the shop, though still unable to see anything, you gave up settling with a sigh.
The commotion didn't faultier for the few minutes after though, it soon became apparent what exactly it was for as the mayor could now be seen outside the shop. He stood there, getting held up in a group of people asking him questions, likely because of the Straw Hat Pirate incident not too long ago and the fact some of his best workers in Galley La were fired.
You stared in amusement as he was pestered, practically ambushed, with questions. It was obvious he was uncomfortable as his eyes widened and lips frowned. In your heart you wanted to save the man but it's unlikely you could do anything to stop it. You simply enjoyed watching his suffering at the moment.
A few minutes later, when you weren't paying attention, the bell on the ship door chimed therefore gaining the attention back. In the door walked in none other then the mayor himself.
"Mayor Iceburg." You spoke with a surprised but light gasp. "What do I owe the honor of having you in my shop to?"
Iceburg scratched the back of his head, unsure of what to say as he looked at everything but you.
"Well...After this years Aqua Laguna I decided that I should look into the work of others to fully understand how to better govern the city." The mayor spoke up in a more refined tone.
"I'm not exactly sure what your getting at sir but, aren't you having auditions for a new secretary today? Shouldn't you be at Galley La?"
"Well... I canceled it for today. Didn't feel like doing it right now." He huffed childishly, arms crossed in the manner. With all of the movement a small mouse appeared from his breast pocket, surprising you.
"Is that a mouse?" You questioned sort of surprised.
"Yes. His name is tyrannosaurus, a quite fitting name. I should have realized that this is a food shop though-"
"I'll be right back." You chimed happily running into the back and soon coming out with a few available, already cracked open, walnuts in hand. You offered them to the mouse as he cheerfully accepted it.
"I think you found my weakness." You giggled, watching tyrannosaurus chew on the food. "Anyways what was it you needed Mr. Mayor?" You looked up at the man who watched contently with a smile until he noticed you saw him and blushed as if he wasn't a grown adult.
"Well I-uh wanted to help work here for the day. I only know about ships and stuff." He confusingly explained.
You were able to connect the dots from what he said earlier.
"The Mont Blanc is running low, they've been a bit hit today, so let's start there, mayor."
"Iceburg is fine."
"Iceburg it is. Though I'm afraid the cute little fella can't go in the kitchen with us." You pouted, referring to Tyrannosaurus and health codes to not serve customers food the has been prepared in the same room as a rodent.
"I can call Paulie to watch him for the day."
After Paulie came to pick up Tyrannosaurus, nicknamed by you Tyranny, Iceburg started to assist in making the Mont Blanc. Paulie didn't come without a fight though, somehow getting to the topic of how you could sully Iceburg in some kind of manner that made no absolute sense.
The next day was lonely and Iceburg was gone but, the day after he once again came back.
"Iceburg? I wasn't expecting to see you, what a pleasant surprise." You smiled cheerfully, happy the man came back for a visit.
"Hello, (Y/N). I came to ask if you'd bake a large batch of cookies for the interview tomorrow."
"You won't cancel it this time, will you?" You jokingly teased the mayor.
"Well... Depends, I might." He once again huffed like a child while simultaneously looking professional in the weird way he does that.
He came back early the next day to pick up the batch of cookies he requested, he undoubtably snuck one the second he grabbed the box. He came back often to order random things, you knew it was an excuse to see you but didn't let it get to your head. One day he visited with his new secretary, a young girl with dark hair, merely a child. It was entertaining seeing the child keep the adult child in line.
A few weeks after his first initial, and unexpected, visit he came back without his new secretary, suspiciously a hand behind his back.
"Welcome back Iceburg." You paid no unnecessary attention to the suspicious arm he held behind him, letting him have his fun.
"Well..." He awkwardly coughed in his free hand, going into a slight stutter and blush. "These are for you." The mayor revealed a bouquet of flowers that were once concealed behind his back.
"They are beautiful Iceburg." You smiled, accepting the bouquet and giving Iceburg a hug out of joy. After letting go you got a chance to observe the flowers, finding a note, flipping it open to reveal the contents.
'Would you like to go out with me?'
You assumed going out meant dating, which later presumed to be accurate when accepting his offer. He was a sweet man, albeit a bit childish. You couldn't deny that you liked the man as well.
A few months went by after you started dating Iceburg, on this day you sat on the mayor's desk humming a tune as your feet kicked slightly of the desk. This was one of the rare days when the secretary was sick and couldn't make it to keep Iceburg in check, she practically begged you to watch him in her place. At first you were unable to do it, having no one to watch the shop. Not too long after the first time she asked, you hired someone to help at the shop, giving you much more free time.
"Iceburg I bought you something, just remembered actually."
The man gave a questioning look, even more so when you pulled the item out of your pocket and could be easy concealed within one palm.
"Would you mind closing your eyes?" You asked as he did so with a raised eyebrow. He felt you placing two items in his hair, though even with his eyes open couldn't quite tell what it was. Iceburg grabbed a hand mirror out of his desk to see.
"Now you and Tyranny match." You giggled teasingly as Iceburg saw two mouse ear clip-ons in his hair.
A knock at the door sounded. Iceburg acted as if he was just as professional as ever before.
"Come in!" He spoke in a higher voice, slightly annoyed with the impatient guest who was none other then the amazing Paulie.
"Iceburg sir-" he only just got passed saying his bosses name as he saw the mouse ears atop Iceburg's head.
"Well, spit it out Paulie." Iceburg huffed, completely serious.
"What is on your head! You did this didn't you woman!? Get off his desk too! Shoo! Outta here!" Paulie once again went in an unnecessary protective mode over his boss.
After Paulie was done with his ranting you stole three things from the mayor's desk which included a pen and his paper and a pair of scissors that he was using to cut paper snowflakes with earlier, in which you allowed him to do pretending you saw nothing.
Iceburg finally gained the courage to speak up as you cut the paper, asking what you were doing. You didn't respond for a few seconds, waiting to finish cutting the paper.
You pointed a paper key you made at Iceburg to say some cheesy line.
"You are the key to my heart."
The End
