Chapter Twenty-Six
Chapter Twenty-Six
And did you know that letting go
Is sometimes easier than holding on?
"Thanks for watching the kids Liam... Normally I would take them with us but there's for of them and well... it makes it hard to go places with four kids." I smiled at Liam the next day, already shoving the kids into the house. Liam hadn't even really woken up yet, a pair of sweats and an oversized t-shirt hanging off him. He scratched his stomach as he arched an eyebrow at me.
"Can you please remind me why the hell you guys are here?" Liam asked, yawning as he stretched.
"Long story. I'll be back around noon to pick them up." I patted his cheek before walking away from their house. I could hear Liam shouting out words of protest but I didn't care. Niall was sitting the car, greeting me with a small smile once I climbed in.
"You okay?" I asked, still somewhat worried after yesterday. Niall hadn't said much about what had happened and he had acted as he usually did.
"I'm fine."
"You sure?"
"Positive. Now cmon, were gonna be late." Niall smiled again, rolling his eyes as I kissed his cheek.
"Love you."
"Idiot."
--------
We pulled up to the hospital about fifteen minutes later. I got out of the car first before running to Niall's side and opening the door for him. He gave me a grateful smile before grabbing my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine. We walked in together, greeting the hospital staff with smiles. We went straight to the pregnancy ward, knowing exactly where it was.
"Niall, long time no see!" Sarah was the first to greet us, her smile just as bright as it was the last time we saw her.
"Hi Sarah." Niall waved at her.
"How have you guys been? How are the kids?" She asked, speaking so quickly that I almost didn't catch what she asked.
Luckily for me Niall did.
"We're all doing great." Niall smiled back, and then the two of them chatted for what felt like ages. I walked up to the receptionist while they talked, grabbing the paperwork that we needed to fill out. I sat down next to Niall as he kept talking to Sarah, the two of them catching up.
It wasn't until they called us back that they finally stopped talking. He grabbed my hand again as we walked down the familiar hallway. They did their mandatory tests, taking for what felt like forever. After he changed into a hospital gown, the nurse lead us to a room.
"You nervous?" I asked him, noticing that he was shaking a little.
"Yeah..." Niall answered honestly, sitting down on the small hospital bed once we reached the room. I gave him a reassuring smile, patting his knee as he rolled his eyes at me.
"It'll be fine Niall. What's the worst that can happen?"
"Please knock on wood."
"You can knock on my wood." I winked, earning yet another eye roll. He went to retort, but was interpreted by the door opening. Doctor Caplow walked in with a smile and a clipboard, a pair of glasses perched on his nose as he shook our hands.
"Boys, it's been a while."
"It hasn't been long enough." I said, bobbing my head. Niall smacked my arm before smiling at Jack.
"It's great to see you Jack." Niall said, still glaring at me. Jack looked down at the chart in his hands, clicking his tongue as he did.
"Well your blood and urine test did come back positive for pregnancy, so I guess congratulations are in order." Jack said, but he wasn't smiling.
Why wasn't he smiling?
"Well that's great news." I said, returning the smile but at the same time I couldn't shake the feeling that there might be something wrong.
"Something else came up in the blood test though... something that I would like to get a closer look at." Jack didn't look away from his clipboard this time, now chewing on the top of his pen. Niall's grip on my hand tightened and for the first time I was completely speechless.
"Is it bad?" Niall asked, his voice weak.
"I don't think so, but its just safe to check it out." Jack finally looked up at us again, but he still wasn't smiling.
But Niall was still reassured.
"So how about we check up on that little one and figure out who far along you are." Jack finally smiled, but you could tell he was worried.
And by him being worried... I was worried.
So when he lead us to the room with the ultrasound machine, I didn't even pay attention to it. I was only focused on Niall.
Every scenario running through my mind.
I was suddenly finding it hard to breathe.
"Harry? Are you okay?" Niall whispered, his gaze moved towards me now. I gave him the best smile I could, grabbing his hand as more of a reassurance for me than him. I went to answer him but a steady heartbeat filled the room, both our gazes fell onto the screen.
"That's... that's not what I think it is, is it?" Niall whispered, his eyes wide as he looked at the screen.
"This is an April fools joke right? Jack. That was yesterday." I pleaded, covering my eyes as I too saw what Niall was seeing.
I was going to puke.
"Congrats boys, you're expecting twins."
