Ahsoka unwrapped a ration that sat untouched on the grey table in front of her a few crumbs spilling out of the packinging as she opened it, brushing the mess onto the floor. The Togruta took a small bite of the tasteless bar, instantly comparing it to chewing a mouth full of sand from Tattoine, and holding back the growing urge to cough it up.
She made a bitter face and stared at the light grey packaging in question but sucked it up after a few seconds and swallowed down another bite. The calming sound of light chater drifted around the small cafeteria of the ship, barley able to hold the amount of clones that packed in one by one, sorting into their respective battalions and companies that blotted the sea of white armour with a bit of color.
A bright white light cast over the grey floors and walls that were shinny and polished, the raw evidence of all the clones who decided to be a bit to wreckless during there spare time and ended up scrubbing the floors instead of down on the planet fighting like they would like. Overall it was a nice place, and Ahsoka found herself shocked that she hadn't been there more often.
Being honest, Ahsoka had forgotten the place had even existed. Being Anakin's padawn there was never a time were she was exploring the ship or relaxing like she would like. Most of the time the Padawan found herself searching for a quiet moment to eat in which she wouldn't be ambushed, kidnapped, or require the hymlic menover after being scared. Long story short she was glad to be home and even more happy about being with Rex although she had not an idea of how he ate the almost insuferable food every single day.
" How do you eat this stuff? " Ahsoka raised her ration bar into the air, waving it in Rex's face with a dry cough. " It's dryer then Tatooine "
The clone shrugged and raised an eyebrow, unable to come up with a good reply for her question.
" It's not that bad Commander. It might not have much flavor, but it provides everything we need and is relatively light on the Republics budget. Feeding millions of Clones would drain all of our credits rather quickly if we were served one star meals. That luxuary is saved for the top. Besides, I- We have had much worse. " Rex scrunched his nose, recalling some of the weird things he had eaten during the war while be stranded in local villages and towns.
Ahsoka cringed. He was probably right. Some things were just not meant to be edible.
Like salads. The padawan didn't preticually like being picky but she was a Carnivore and the GAR seemed a bit more compassionate and easygoing in supplying what she needed unlike the clones who would stuff down whatever they were given. It wasn't her top choice in food but Ahsoka could handle a ration here or there .
" So.. " Ahsoka belted out, trying to start a conversation between the two. " Do you know where we are headed next?! " she flung a few crumbs across the table unintentionally. Rex brushed them off the table and shook his head with a hum.
" General said we would be off this rock by the next cycle but knowing him it will take a bit longer than that. After that I'm not sure. Probably back Coruscant if I had to guess, were most likely running low on fuel and Fives is starting to go crazy from the cold. " he shrugged.
Ahsoka bit off another bite of her food and nodded along with the clone, scooting slightly closer to him. Whenever help wasn't needed they were on Coruscant. It was a nice place, busy and a bit loud but other than that all the best missions and her friends resided at the Jedi Temple on the planet. She was usually pretty happy to be back unless the Council was there to chew her and Anakin out about being 'wreckless ' whatever that meant.
But just because the council was always boring didn't that Ahsoka ccouldn't have some fun either. On occasion she would sneak out with the boys and head over to 79's and mess around or stop at the small diner that sat on the corner and spend all their extra credits. A small smile perked at Ahsoka's lips as she placed her hand on Rex's, giving it a light squeeze. The clone didn't seem to mind at first but slowly moved to attention, his hands snapping back to his side as if he was almost afraid.
" Careful, we got eyes on us " he whispered, looking down to the Padawan who perked up at the comment. Not many clones were brave though to be spying on a Captian and Commander and if they were something was weird.
" Who is it? " She rubbed the back of her hand, choking down another bite of ration as a decoy to her actions with the clone. Rex scanned the crowd once more and responded dryly, his face stone like.
" Dogma " the captain replied, nodding to the far side of the cafeteria. Ahsoka locked eyes with the man but quickly looked away, trying not to raise any red flags.
" Does he always do that? " she asked.
Rex shook his head.
" Not that I know of. He's more by the book than Echo is. If we got caught by someone like that were done for. " the larger clone looked down at Ahsoka. The Togruta ruffled her nose an shot a glance at Dogma that seemed to catch his attention.
There was something about him Ahsoka didn't like. And to make matters worse if he was even more stingy with the rules then Echo she had no doubt that he would snitch on them at any oppertuiny he had. As a cadet, clones were raised to turn to their brothers for anything that needed imeatete attention or was just bothering them in general. The clones were taught they had there brothers and no one else. The Jedi were 'too busy and important to deal with their small problems 'and civilians could care less about any of them in general Rex recalled a tall Kaminoin telling him that back on Kamino.
The Captian had quickly come to learn that everything was not always as it seemed.
After his run-in with the disgraced ' Slick ', a former Republic Sergent, Rex learned that there was a lot more than just looks to people. Slick was a traitor and the captain didn't have a doubt in his mind there were more like him. There were two sides to everything. The side that decided to believe and place their safety in his army's hands and the other side thought the clones and Jedi were more of the problem than the solution.
And this split wasn't just between the people of the galaxy. But his brothers as well.
Many were unsure of their place as a living being and often questioned their entire existence if they were to be raised to fight in a war that they were thrown into without a care at all. Clones were replaceable beings with millions of other copys being available at moments notice. It was hard to believe that they were important in such a place like this.
Rex felt uneasy as he looked down at Ahsoka, his mind randomly starting to stir with questions. He had sworn to protect his Jedi Commander and General the very second he left Kamino. And he wasn't going to leave her in the hands of luck or chance. Not this time.
Ahsoka snapped her head up quickly, feeling Rex tug on her hand in uneasyness. She looked into his tired eyes that protrayed the message crystal clear to her mind, almost as if they could read each others throughts. Although she wasn't sure why he was so nervous all of a sudden Rex had his reasons and she didn't need to question them. If he didn't feel they should be there, she would follow.
Standing up Togruta watched as Rex give a final glance to Dogma, before turning around nodding for her to follow and walking away. He didn't speak. The clone looked deep in thought as he walked quiet and almost robotically down the halls.. Ahsoka didn't want to disrupt but something was bothering him. Felling of worry and untrust trickled into her mind.
The Togruta opened her mouth to speak but quickly shut it.
Was it her place to speak? Whatever it was it was important, and she didn't need him to think she didn't trust him. But she couldn't leave him to drown in his feelings. As a Jedi she was taught to be compassionate and understanding, and always be there for people in need. And the opportunity was right in front of her.
" Is something wrong Captain" Ahsoka used his formal title, eyeing a few clones walk down the bright white halls. Rex shook his head looking down at her, clearly hiding something. " Nothing Commander " he quickly dismissed everything. Ashoka shook her head.
" You can't lie for the life of you Captain. Spill it whats wrong. " she playfully elbowed his shoulder pad. Rex shook his head, he already knew it was a lost cause to try to lie to a Jedi. They always knew. Always.
Rex sighed a half exasperated breath. Looking around the hall he turned back to Ahsoka.
" Listen Ahsoka. I've been in this war a long time and seen a lot. I also know it doesn't take much for people to turn their backs on us. I'm just trying to keep both of us safe. I don't even want to think of what would happen if Anakin or the Jedi council found out about us. But it wouldn't be good either way. Dogma was staring me down. Like he was looking for something. I've seen that look before. The situation didn't end well. It doesn't look like he has any intentions but its best just to stay alert for a while. In the end, I can't even trust myself. " He referred to all the clones.
Ahsoka nodded blankly.
" I know how you feel " she simply replied.
