"Come on," Ahsoka whispered, ducking around the corner. Sneaking out of the Coruscant barracks was harder than it originally seemed. The place was of course swamped with clones and a random jedi once in a while. Ahsoka didn't want to risk any chance of being caught, but knew they had to make it back before nightfall. Anakin would know by then.
"I'm coming," Rex smiled back, sprinting after her. Ahsoka couldn't help but chuckle.
"We're almost there." She could see the exit of the building. The hallway was empty, and Ahsoka took the opportunity to grab Rex's hand and run for it. She kept her head low, in hopes no one would walk out or catch sight of her and a certain Captain that was supposed to be filling out paperwork.
Rex stumbled slightly from her speed, as to which she slowed down in hopes of him not falling. They didn't have any time for that. Over the past year and a half they had been dating, Ahsoka had to become crafty in her ways of escape. Depending on where they were, there was almost always a different way out she took.
Sneaking out as a jedi, and a highly respected clone Captain of the 501st out of all things, was a difficult task. But until now they hadn't gotten caught, so Ahsoka knew she was doing something right. Ahsoka smiled to herself as she remembered her previous escapes from the other clones and Jedi.
Making her way through all of the continuous halls Ahsoka stopped at a door that led to a private landing pad that Anakin kept for himself.
It was covered in all sorts of speeder bikes, random parts, and random ship parts he tinkered with in his spare time. Anakin never really noticed when a ship or two was missing. As long as it was returned by the end of the cycle. Otherwise he may or not send the entire 501'st searching for a missing ship or tool.
Yeah turns out Obi-Wan had borrowed a tool for some unknown reason and forgot to return it. That certainly was an interesting fight to witness. It lasted for about an hour of Anakin lecturing Obi-Wan about not touching his things. Obi-Wan brought up a lot of things that Anakin never returned and it was quite a sight to see Anakin stop and see his face turn beet red. He forgave Obi-Wan quickly after that.
Ahsoka chuckled at the thought before turning back to Rex, who had become a bit more relaxed.
"You do know that if we even get one scratch on anything here Anakin will know right?" Rex warned, patting the ship slightly, his voice taut.
"Oh come on Anakin won't even realize we left. He's probably off doing something with Padme anyways. It will be ages before he gets back from his 'important work that's not here.'" Ahsoka assured Rex. "Come on loosen up a bit we won't get caught. How many times have we done this before?"
Rex paused for a moment before answering Ahsoka's question.
"Too many times to count." Rex admitted before letting out a short laugh. "Becoming a Captain makes you think about the consequences of everything."
Ahsoka tapped a finger to the corner of her lips as she considered what Rex had expressed.
"You have a fair point, Captain. Getting caught definitely is the last thing I want to happen. But if we don't make it back in time we should get something for Anakin while we are out. That way he won't cross when we return. You might not believe it but Obi-Wan had to stop him from putting coffee in his cereal once." She shrugged as she added the last bit.
Rex didn't,no wouldn't doubt it. The general was an interesting jedi and leader to say the least. But Rex definitely wouldn't want to work under any other jedi. Ahsoka smiled, running her hand along the side of the smooth ship.
"We have someone else coming along with us." Ahsoka mentioned in an afterthought, as she walked half-way up the ramp. Rex looked around but there was no other sign of any other life, just tools and ship parts.
From the corner of the room came a loud beep, and a red and gold droid rolled out quickly past Rex stopping at Ahsoka's feet. The Torggata patted the droid carefully before disappearing into the ship, R-4 at her heels .
Rex never understood droids. He didn't necessarily like them either. He stared at the opening of the ship for a second before walking forward.
"It's just R-4. Just in case we need some help." Ahsoka explained. Rex scoffed.
"I think we could manage, besides a droid would only slow us down." Rex expressed as he glared down at the droid. He didn't mind R-4 too much as long as it didn't turn out it was reprogrammed by a separatist. And to no surprise that had actually happened before.
Oh the things they had been through. Rex liked it just being Ahsoka and him. It was quiet, and they could relax for a little while without the worry of being caught.
Rex could care less what coffee he was given, but Ahsoka only liked one place, and one place in particular. It was also not a short trip back from where they were supposed to be, but Rex made the exception for her.
The hum of a starting ship made the clone let out a breath of relief. No more war, no more fighting, no more death, just peace. For now. Wandering up to the front, Rex watched Ahsoka place her lightsabers down, her blue eyes hollowed out from tiredness.
She stretched slightly, before sinking back into the seat with a grunt. " What are we going to do about this war? '' R-4 sat next to her tentatively.
" I'm not sure we can do anything other then fight and have faith. But it will end someday. I can guarantee you that. " Rex spoke up, taking a gentle seat next to her. Her face stayed the same. " I know I complain about it a lot, but I'm done being a piece in this game. I've never had a childhood like all the others. All I've ever known is the war, that's all I can even remember. " she clicked a few buttons.
Rex felt the exact same way. Without the war, he wouldn't even be here. Many other clones either hated the war, and took it to the extremes, or knew it wasn't going to change and accepted their fate. Rex had come to accept him.
Spent as much time with Ahsoka as he could, and either died in battle or from old age as a result of his enhanced traits. That's all he wanted to do. But Ahsoka had a whole list of things she needed to do even when the war was over.
He would stand by her side as much as he could, but eventually had to let go. Ahsoka shifted uncomfortably in her seat, glancing at R-4 then back at Rex. The clone spoke the best words he could.
" Being honest, I am too. I'm tired of watching my brothers die, you get hurt. But this is all we have now Ahsoka. Where would we go or do?
If you ran, Anakin would track you down and make me do it. This is our life. We have to embrace it rather than push it away. We have to be thankful for what we have at this given moment " he rubbed the back of his head.
" I know " the Tortuga mumbled back, not happy but acknowledging. The ship went completely quiet.
In the everlasting silence Ahsoka's cool blue eyes slowly met his chocolate brown ones, and for a second there was peace. Ahsoka smiled slightly, leaning in for a small kiss. Rex followed in her footsteps. That was until R-4 started to beep. Ahsoka frowned, looking back at the droid unhappily.
" Thanks a lot R-4. What touching moment " she knocked on the top of the droid with a hollow thunk. R-4 made a series of sounds in retaliation, before slowly driving off into the back of the ship.
" Sorry about that " Ahsoka rolled her eyes, Turing back to Rex. " He has a special knack at interrupting, '' she pointed towards the back. Rex chuckled, glancing out into the golden coruscant traffic
" Droids " Rex whipped around, pulling Ahsoka into a passionate kiss. Ahsoka squeaked slightly in shock but slowly melted into the clone's embrace. A smile formed on her lips, pulling back for some air.
Rex had a tendency to get flustered and it perfectly shone through with his face turning so red, it looked like a siths lightsaber. Ahsoka snorted, he was adorable. A fierce, high ranking captain getting flustered over his commander.
It sounded like something you would hear in a children's book. Rex didn't want to even look at her. Relaxing slightly Ahsoka stared out of the ship, watching the rapidly darkening landscape. Stars and planets started to poke out from beneath the cover of daylight. Pointing at one of the stars, she used her hand to trace a small constellation, recalling the memories she had saved on each planet.
The sudden popping noise made Rex stiffen slightly, his defensive ' protect the commander ' nerves setting in place. Ahsoka scanned the horizon line in curiosity.
" There it is! Look! " Ahsoka pulled Rex to his feet. A series of bright colored fireworks popped in the now dark sky, lighting up the passing ships and buildings. Rex clicked his tongue.
" Looks like the boys were successful once again " he watched side by side with Ahsoka. Fireworks were not an uncommon practice on Coruscant Whenever a long mission, or battle was completed successfully, people would stand on their roofs and shoot off fireworks with the color of the squads involved.
Ahsoka thought it was the most beautiful thing ever.
" Bly! "
" Looks like Wolfe tagged in on the action "
" Cody! "
" This must have been some mission. They called in the Marines. "
A series more of colors lit up the sky but finally a large blue blast lit up the sky, followed by another. The sky twinkled with glee. Ahsoka's eyes glittered with pride and excitement watching the blue faze back into the darkness of the night.
" There we are " Rex sighed a happy breath, knowing that another mission was over and how his brothers could finally return home. Long battles left the most amount of scars and they all needed to rest. And he would know. He stationed them there.
" Congratulations Captain! " Ahsoka threw herself into the Captain wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. Rex stumbled back upon impact but quickly regained his composure. He picked Ahsoka off the ground, lifting her to his eyes. " There's no one I would rather spend it with, " he twirled her around a few times.
Ahsoka laughed with a clink as her feet gently hit the ground. She gazed out into the night traffic once again aware of where they were. " Here's our stop " she took a seat, becoming a pilot. Rex watched happily from the back. In the love of the moment, his comm started to buzz loudly.
" Just great, " the Captain slumped, pressing the button.
" Captain Rex here " he sounded unhappy.
" Rex, Fives got a bit tipsy over at 99s. He's gonna have an extreme hangover tomorrow " Echo yelled into the com, still barely loud enough over the sound of blaring music. Rex pinched the bridge of his nose.
They were always in one sort of trouble or another. " Get Kix to pick you up. I'm busy " he ended the channel. Ahsoka was already waiting, leaning up against R-4.
" Are you ready?! '' she tapped her com, raising an eyebrow. Rex rolled his eyes with a gruff laugh.
" Yes, I swear Fives needs a full time babysitter. " He wandered forward, Ahsoka following. The air was cold, and bit at Ahsoka's skin, the thought of a warm drink making her smile even larger. The place she loves was small, and placed in a terrible spot. Gangs and sith bounty hunters liked to hang around the area frequently, but that never stopped her from going. She was a Jedi and had a fully trained Clone Captain with her. They were both protected more than she wanted.
Opening the door to the small cafe, a burst of warm air hit her face, followed by the soothing sound of a bell that hung above the door. She hadn't been here in a while. The familiar paintings, faces, and pastries made it feel even more like home. With an added member.
The second she walked in, the two were greeted by a happy welcome along with a few mysterious looks. Many civics hadn't ever seen a jedi and clone sleasing around at night. It was also interesting with how high in the ranks Rex was, which they could tell from the pauldron. But Ahsoka could care less, she was used to the looks and Rex probably was as well.
Taking a seat at a small booth, Ahsoka watched the bustle in the building. It was dead in the middle of the evening rush. Tired waitresses scampered back and forth between patrons, who were either doing work or just enjoying the evening.
" Ahsoka? " a small voice piped up. The Torguta immediately popped up in her name.
" Malia? " she whipped her head around.
Across the room stood a tall Lepi, her fur white with a few black spots on her ears. She was wearing the standard attire for such a place, tray in hand.
" You should have told me you were stopping by. I might have been able to get something good, " Lepi laughed. Ahsoka joined in.
" I don't know if your definition of good matches mine " Ahsoka stood up. Rex watched her every move. " It's great to see you again burch " the two hugged slightly.
" So what brings you out here " Malia placed a cup on a table, the coffee still steaming hot. Ahsoka shrugged and glanced back at Rex. " Just thought I would come out. The war has been crazy, I also wanted to bring a certain friend " she carefully chose her words.
" Friend huh. Ahsoka honey, I know you're too fierce to just have friends, " Lepi continued. Ahsoka nodded her head. Leaning in, the Torgruta whispers something quietly and Malia bounced back. " Really? Are you going to invite me to the wedding? " she teased.
Rex had never felt so embarrassed in his life. Ahsoka shook her head, helping pass out mugs of coffee. " I don't know, circumstances are not exactly in our favor at this second. '' Ahsoka huffed out a breath.
" Give me a second. You can introduce me to this man. He better be treating you right. " she pointed a finger in the air, before disappearing to the back of the cafe. Ahsoka went to find her seat again. She was never one for manners but Anakin had taught her a few things.
Sitting down, she glanced up to Rex who looked at her then the back of the store. " I'm guessing you two know each other. " he tapped the table. Ahsoka did a facepalm.
" I'm sorry. That's Malia, I saved her from a slave trader once. She moved to Courocaunt and I try to visit her any time I have. One of my only ' none personal ' friends. " she did finger quotes.
Rex nodded his head in recognition.
" Alright honey, where's this man? " Malia fiddled with her apron. Rex snorted.
" Look up and use your eyes, " Ahsoka teased. Malia's face shifted slightly, looking at the floor almost offended.
" You know for all I do for you I think I deserve- " The Lepi went quiet. Rex stared at her for a second, and she stared back. " Hello " he waved his hand slightly.
Malia was at a loss for words. She stuttered a few times, before hunching over in a bow.
" Vor entye for your service. " she resided in Mando'a. Rex raised an eyebrow, he had never seen that before. The Lepi stood up. " I heard you guys just finished a pretty long battle in the outer rim. It must be tiring work out there. " she approached the two. Rex nodded his head.
" I wasn't stationed there, but half of my battalion was. I'm not sure how many are going to be returning home " He tapped the table again. Ahsoka stuck out her hand, placing it on top of the Captains.
Malia looked like she was about to burst.
" Aww you are too cute. Coffee's on me tonight. Congratulations on the battle sir " Malia wandered away. Rex closed his eyes. He just needed some Caf, and sleep.
There was plenty to do tomorrow
Trying to not get caught by the General was not what Rex planned on today; but when Ahsoka and coffee were involved that completely changed. It was near the middle of the night, and to many's surprise the barracks were weirdly quiet, unlike the crazy days.
The easy part of sneaking out was over, now came sneaking back in. According to Ahsoka it was always easy to get back in unnoticed. Well it might be easy for her but Rex was not very light footed and getting thrown off things definitely had some effects on him. Anakin was also most active at night for some reason she didn't know. He was always building something, training with Obi-Wan or waking her up in the middle of the night.
Ahsoka knew Anakin would be prowling around somewhere. The nerveing thing was he almost always had eyes on her. It was rare she could sneak out without him questioning it. Anakin felt like her father in instances, it was nice but mildly annoying in others.
"If we take that hallway we might be able to sneak into the Cafeteria and act like nothing happened." Ahsoka mentioned as she pointed across the hall. That tactic had worked once before, maybe it would work its charm again. Rex nodded, but grabbed her and pulled back. Ahsoka yelped quietly, feeling her feet lift from the floor. She looked up to Rex, upset written on her face. Rex motioned silently to the corner.
"I do not owe you anything. I was the one who saved you. I know you don't have the best memory, but if anything you owe me."
"No! You still owe me those credits. Regardless of who saved who. I can think of at least five times I saved you." The second voice argued back.
Ahsoka placed a hand over her mouth, stifling her breath. She knew that refined accent. Ahsoka whipped her head back to Rex, making motions over her neck. It was Anakin and Obi-Wan. Of course they had to be here and now. Suddenly Anakin's head peaked around the corner startling Ahsoka and Rex. "I still think I deserve the credit-" Anakin's voice trailed off and then he raised an eyebrow when he caught sight of the two on the ground. Ahsoka only then noticed, she was completely on the floor in Rex's lap. "Well that certainly is something I think I'll just head out." Anakin swiftly turned around like he was going to leave, but turned right back around. Obi-Wan stood right by the knight's side, stroking his beard awkwardly .
Ahsoka sat there for a second and blinked at the two masters in front of her. If she couldn't convince them, they were both toast. Rex on the other quickly scrambled up, pushing Ahsoka off of him.
"I hope you have a good explanation for this?" Obi-Wan asked, an eyebrow raised as he continued stroking his beard. Ahsoka swore under her breath. The Togruta quickly raised her mental shields, making sure no one could dig around her mind.
"Well, um you see-" Ahsoka started before Anakin cut in. Ahsoka looked at Rex, who was perfectly in stance and starting to sweat under the pressure.
"Is that coffee? Where is mine? Snips you know the rules, if you're going to sneak out, at least get me something for the trouble. Gimme yours." Anakin demanded as he stuck out a hand, making grabby motions. Ahsoka snorted and then reluctantly handed over her coffee.
"There might be some sugar at the bottom. I don't know if Obi-Wan wants you drinking that though." Ahsoka joked before she promptly burst out laughing. Anakin smiled, looking into the bottom of the cup.
"Obi-Wan isn't my master anymore so I can have all the sugar I want, thank you very much." Anakin reminded Ahsoka, before he downed all of the contents in the cup. He elbowed the ginger jedi once he finished.
"Sorry I didn't think to get you any tea." Ahsoka barely managed to make out due to her laughter. Anakin quickly joined in wiping a fake tear from his eye. Rex found the situation less than humorous. Obi-Wan looked back over to Rex, who looked very ashamed.
"I apologize for their behavior sir." Rex placed his hands behind his back. Obi-Wan shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose. " At ease, Captain. You don't have to apologize. I deal with these two on a daily basis. " a faint smile shone from his face.
Anakin briefly stopped his laughter. " Snips, your humor is getting better and better " the two did a giggly high five. Rex rolled his eyes in dismay. Sometimes the general really shone out of Ahsoka. Not that he didn't like it, but it could be a bit much at times.
" Well unlike you two, I have things to attend to. Goodnight " Obi-Wan put on a sour smile, bowing then walking down the hall. Anakin bowed back after the ginger had left. He turned his attention back to Ahsoka.
" I got that part you wanted, Snips. I don't know how well it will fit on your hilt, but we can try. " He smiled, pointing over his shoulder. Ahsoka smiled happily. " I should be on my way as well," Rex nodded, grabbing his helmet from his belt. Anakin waved at the Captain, and the Tortuga rocked back and forth awkwardly.
Anakin started forward, leaving the clone and jedi to stare at each other weirdly. Rex let out a breath of relief. " That was too close " Ahsoka took a step forward.
Rex nodded. "It was, " he pulled her into a hug. Ahsoka purred slightly, resting her head on Rex's chest plate. " I wish I could stay like this forever " she whispered comfortably. Rex placed his head on her Lekku. "Huh, me too, " he chuckled. Much to Ahsoka's despite, the clone pulled away looking into her eyes.
"Be careful alright " he nodded.
"Always " Ahsoka jumped up kissing his cheek, before running down the primarily vacant halls, trailing her master. Rex ran a hand down his face. That girl was going to be the death of him.
