Rex felt a rush of adrenaline hit him hard. It was a surprise attack. He had told Ahsoka they would be able to leave soon, but of course something happened. A whole Sepritist Dreadnought had shown up, supplying thousands of droids, along with three sith. A firefight raged not only between the Republic and Separatists ships, but on the ground as well.
They were going to need backup, and quickly. Rex had already called in General Kenobi, Cody and the rest of the 212’th, but no response from any of them. If there wasn't help soon this battle would be over.
And they wouldn't be the ones to win it. Both the commander and general had their hands full, fighting not only Grievous and Dooku, but Ventriss as well. Three fully trained sith up against one trained Jedi and a Padawan. Not a promising outlook. But Rex wasn't going to let up so easily.
He and his brothers had their job and the jedi had theirs. His head hurt. Fog covered his helmet visor, his panicked breath not slowing. There were bodies everywhere. The snow was drenched in blood red, it was hard not to trip over the amount of droids and dead brothers.
But there were still plenty of droids left to destroy. And his job wouldn't be finished until they were all gone.
“Rex, we're going to need some help. AND SOON!” Fives voices illuminated on the com-line.
“I'm cornered,” Echo said, his voice no longer reserved and quiet, but anxious and spooked. “I’m sorry vod but I’m a little tied up at the moment.”
Rex growled. “I did all I could. I called Cody in but no hail. Fives get over there and help Echo. We have to push on.”
Rex quickly threw out orders. It was hard to focus on yourself, your men, and your Jedi you swore to protect. It felt like the weight of the world was on your shoulders at all the same time. Especially being a Captain. The one your whole squad looked up to and looked for direction.
He was supposed to be a leader. But half of them had died due to his failed leadership. It was hard to watch. Droids marched closer and closer, the crack of their metal feet breaking the armour of the dead clones.
Rex felt sick to his stomach. He always did, but through the feeling his mind flickered back to Ahsoka. It tended to do that quite often. He looked over, catching sight of Anakin and Ahsoka who were quickly being overwhelmed by the power of multiple Sith.
“Hold on Soka. I’ll be there soon.” He whispered quietly, almost as if she could hear him. Maybe she could, Jedi could do weird things.
Clearing his mind he continued to hold his fire. They were being pushed back, barely holding onto the ground they had just won days ago. He could feel the heat of blaster bolts barely skimming past him. The armour he wore could only protect him from some shots, but inevitably they would hit their mark. The droids had some of the work aim, but had numbers. More than the Republic did. That's what gave them the advantage.
“Rex, we're being overdriven. We can't hold like this much longer.” Jesse's voice broke out, dragging Rex out of his thoughts. Jesse never talked in battle. Unless it was urgent. Then again every battle had its urgent moments.
“I know Jesse, we are losing ground too quickly. I called in for reinforcements but I don’t know if they got it.” Rex said tiredly. He was quickly losing his strength. The droids kept swarming in, two more rising whenever one got shot down.
“This might be it men, you fought well....” his voice was breaking off. The droids surrounding him and his men.
“I don't think so Rex.” A voice from above said.
“It's good to see you, captain. Do you know where General Skywalker is? “ Jedi Plo Koon's voice played next.
“Anakin leaves behind quite a mess, I doubt he’ll be hard to find.” Obi-Wan Kendobi spoke smugly. Rex nodded even though he knew the jedi couldn't see him.
Rex chuckled, “Yes sir.”
Ships flew from the sky, a few troopers with jet packs landed safely on the ground. Blurs of orange and grey mixed with the blue. He watched as Plo Koon, and Obi Wan joined Anakin and Ahsoka, their lightsabers crackling in the snow. Rex could practically hear the defeat of the Sepertist by now. But he still had his very small squad to keep safe.
“501st, push back,” he softly spoke into the com, feeling the weight slowly lift off his shoulders. Rex watched as the other squads progressed, quickly grazing through the field of droids.
All he needed was a bit of help. Before Rex could begin to run to safety, his com beeped, but not from any of his men. From the General. It beeped a few more times before Rex pushed it, looking over to the ongoing fight.
“Rex!” his general's voice quickly shot through.
“Yes sir? We are in full retreat, the other squads have our place.” he waited for the response.
Rex could physically hear the physical strain of the jedi. His lightsabers crackled in the back. “Thats-- Thats great Rex. But I need you to get Snips back to the ship and take her to Kix. She took a pretty big blow. Three sith is a bit above her level. “
Rex bit his lip. “Yes sir.” he responded looking back at the show of light. The com beeped and the conversation ended. Ahsoka was slowly fighting Ventriss, her usual high pitched beat thrown completely off. “Why does she always have to be the one to get hurt.” he slumped.
Grabbing one of his pistols he ran forth towards the fight. Being a clone with a blaster, and running towards six force using jedi and sith was quite scary in a sense. But now isn't the time. Ahsoka seemed to catch his glint, but quickly returned to fighting, not taking her eyes off Ventress.
Anakin never fully explained how he was going to get her back, so as always he would have to compromise. Rex fired off a couple of shots, missing almost each time. He wasn't any jedi, but something was obviously happening.
In the heat of everything Ventress looked up and stared him right in the eyes. Rex felt a chill go down his spine. She was always creepy, and had taken more lives of his brothers then he even wanted to think of.
Ahsoka gritted her teeth, and tried to push him back from the fight. Rex rolled his eyes. It was Ahsoka, always trying to save others in danger. But if she didnt get out safe, Anakin would have his head.
“ Snips. Your going with Rex. “ Anakin shouted not exactly able to look at her. Ahsoka growled. “ No master. Im fine I can continue “ she strained under Ventris continued attacks.
Anakin gave her the said eye before looking to Plo Koon for help. "Soka, now isn't the time to argue ad’ika. " He sounded eerily calm. Rex stared at the tired Tortuga. She want going to give up.
" Why is it always me. " He looked up into the crisp sky. Ahsoka landed again. She couldn't keep this up much. As much as she wanted to be strong and continue to fight, a hurt arm wasnt helping any. She growled in frustration.
Using the force she pushed the sith back several feet, feeling her legs shake. Preparing for Ventris next attempt Ahsoka fixed her dorm and stared ath the sith.
That was untill a pair of arms wrapped around her waist, and lifted her up.
" REX! " She yelled in surprise and frustration, watching as they fled the scene. Ventriss seemed to tired from Ahsoka and wanted a bigger challenge, as she joined the fight with her master.
Ahsoka felt slightly embarrassed and fearfull for there cover, but mixed with that she was upset at the captain. She was fine. She could still fight.
" Rex!! Put me down " she kicked around a few times, trying to return to the fight.
"No can do Commander. I've got orders to get you out of here." He spoke calmly. Ahsoka continued to struggle, Rec just held her closer.
" Why are you so stubborn " she stared right though his helmet. The clone didn't respond.
Once he seemed safe and far enough away, he sat the Jedi down and looked her in the eyes. " I'm going to do what I can. Don't move, and work with me ' he said sternly, like she was a new cadet.
Ahsoka crossed her arms very slowly. " I'm fine Rex " she stubbornly replied. Rex could tell she was upset. " Ahsoka, now is not the time " he sounded somewhat scary.
" That won't work on me Rex Fett. I'm fine " she tried to convince him. He just looked annoyed. Ahsoka huffed in defeat. Extending her arm towards Rex. She winced slightly as Rex gently turned her arm to better look at the wound.
It was weird. Her whole arm burned, but the cold stung at her skin. "Sorry," Rex apologized, his voice echoing in Ahsoka's head. "That cut looks pretty serious, I'll get Kix to come check it out."
He told the Padawan. She looked at him with an agitated look. Ahsoka rips her arm away from Rex. Rubbing her injured arm slightly she mumbled, "It's not that bad."
" Let's not play this game now, I'll win in the end. " Rex helped her up. Ahsoka rolled her eyes.
" Sure Captain "
