With strange words my heart broke
It was a hesitation of an incantation
that kept us safe as I drove
into that surreal night

The unction that pressed
inside of my chest
like a warning from a dear friend
would not end
until the demons sank
below

Your panicked eyes
could not find compromise
or a way to speak beyond
my shielded mind

At the height of my serenade
when losing ground I nearly swayed
until they swerved into that streetlight
and crashed.

The woman lay there bleeding
and I heard a spirit pleading
for your life and mine

I looked into your eyes
I begged you to see
but you laughed at it all
and you laughed at me

I turned and left you there
still quite unaware
how close we came
to the edge of your cliff

You nearly pulled me over
when you jumped
and all I could do
was watch
