•Chapter Seven•
The clock on the wall in his office tutted at me as I battled through various math questions. I wouldn't have been surprised if Laurie could see thick black smoke billowing from my ears as stared at the numbers on the paper. He had told me exactly what to do, but, admittedly, I had been staring into his eyes whilst completely ignoring every word that was coming out of his mouth. I sighed, putting the pen lid into my mouth, lightly chewing on it. I had no idea what I was doing, and nor did I care about it. I wasn't going to involve math into my life, I hated it and I was sure that it hated me. In reality, I didn't want to involve any kind of education in my life. I was done with it. I wanted to throw the towel in and get a dead-end office job.
"Laurie? Do I have to? I can't do it." I said, taking the lid from my mouth, placing it back onto the nib of the pen. He rolled his eyes, sitting further back in his office chair, his arms behind the back of his head.
"I've just told you what to do, William." He said in a monotone voice, staring at the space above my head.
"I wasn't listening." I admitted with a sigh, he shook his head, dropping his hands down into his lap. He cocked his head to the side, probably thinking about how to tease me next; or, how to hate me.
"Do you ever listen to a word that I say? Do I need to answer that question?" He asked, exhaling loudly. He scratched the back of his neck; it was hiding under another one of his white designer shirts. He pinched the bridge of his nose as I went to whine at him more, but no sound bothered to escape from behind my lips, as I knew that he was completely right. I didn't listen to him, I probably never would – I come to the conclusion that it was probably the teenage part of my brain telling me to ignore him because he wasn't my 'real dad.'
"I know that you hate me, and I also know that you can't be bothered to actively engage in my lessons. But, I have a job to do. Just - try to finish at least a few pages a day, and I won't pester you about it anymore. I have to educate you, even if it's just a little – because your mother will dangle me from our bedroom by my testicles." He said with a sly smile, I found myself giggling. It was a fine image to put into my pubescent head. Not Laurie dangling from their bedroom window, the image of him naked. The thought of being able to revel in the awe of his fully-naked body was something that I truly wanted to experience. Sure, his shorts were as close as I was probably going to get, but I was allowed to dream.
"That, is an image I probably don't want to see." I lied, rolling my eyes. He sniggered, leaning in close to me. It had gotten to the point that he was so near, I could hear his slow breathing. I allowed him to press his forehead against mine, I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath in. The warmth of his skin against mine didn't fail to send shivers across my small body, his hand snaked up to grip my cheek, bringing it up so that our eyes were level. He whispered in a low tone imploring me to open my eyes, I did, basking in the warmth lurking in his.
He pressed his lips against mine, I reached up to hold his face as his tongue made its way into my mouth. I had never kissed anybody before – I had never been kissed before. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know how to feel, I didn't know where to put my hands. He picked me up out of my seat, placing me down on his desk. He began to kiss my neck, my arms hung limp by my side, still unsure of what to do. The feeling in my stomach had grown stronger than I had ever felt, and suddenly my clothes felt too tight. I let out a gasp as he latched onto my skin, nibbling it gently, before he pulled away. He pressed his forehead against mine again, holding me in place staring into my eyes. I looked at him, my mouth ajar, eyes begging him to carry on. He smiled, brushing his thumb across my cheek, squeezing it a little. I pouted, he traced the outline of my lips before answering the question that my eyes were posing him. "If you do your work – properly – them, I promise that you can have more." He said, ruffling my hair, sitting down in his chair, slowly spinning from left to right.
I watched him for a few moments, before putting my pencil into my mouth, chewing the end. I stared down at the numbers, my mind wanting to explode – I told myself to shut up, writing other numbers down. He was looking out of the window, the sun brightening his face, making his dark eyes glisten. I would sneak glances at him as he stared out of the window, falling more and more in love with him. I didn't know what made me fall with him; I settled for a mixture of the way that he treated me, and the way that he did things. He sat with his chin between his thumb and his index finger, thinking to himself. I supposed that that was one of my favourite things.
After an hour or so, I had finished my work, and we had moved to the lounge. I was lying on his chest, as his hand slowly ran itself through my hair. His other hand stroked my back, I knew that he wanted to take it off. I nuzzled into his chest, trying to keep myself awake as we watched some English sitcom. Every so often he would chuckle, his chest rising and falling, I would look up and watch him smile. He didn't seem to smile very often, he spent a lot of his time scowling, or with a blank expression – probably too stubborn to hide his true feelings.
"Laurie?" I asked, watching him peel himself away from the television, looking down at me.
"Yes?" He asked, looking down at me, cocking his head to the side.
"Isn't this, you know, wrong? If mom found out -"
"William, your mother is thousands of miles away. She's probably flirting with an attractive Italian man that is a lot more masculine than me. You know, a big muscly man that can actually pass as a model husband." He laughed, I rolled my eyes with a smile. There was truth to his words, whatever was happening or whatever was going to happen between us, was probably going to stay between us. There was no way that she would find out, unless she marched in here and saw him holding me the way that he was. Whatever was about to blossom between us, was going to stay between us. I smiled, picking up his hand that now lay limp between me and the couch, placing it back onto my back. It began to stroke me again, I held onto him a little tighter.
"What do you think she would say if she found out?" I asked, my words slightly muffled as my cheek was pressed against his chest.
"I should think that she would have me arrested. And, she would divorce me – I wouldn't blame her for doing that. It isn't every day that you leave your son with your new husband, and they kiss them in the study." He raised his eyebrows, picking up the TV remote to flick through the channels. I nodded, thinking that he had a good point, before fixing my gaze on the screen.
"I think that that would be a sight to see. Not that I wish any harm on your mother. I think that she's a great woman, and she's very determined." He said, patting my back.
I sat up, he was watching me intently, he placed his hands on my hips. He squeezed gently, cocking his head to the side. I held his hands, looking down into those dark brown eyes of his.
"I'm glad that she's not here." I smiled, he chuckled, his hands moving down to my thighs. Butterflies in my stomach began to flutter, as he sat up, placing his lips against mine. I wrapped my legs around his waist, his hand cupping my cheek. He nibbled my bottom lip, before his lips made their way down to my neck. There was a pale circular mark on my neck from earlier that day, he smiled, kissing the exact same spot. My fingers dug into his back through his shirt, I wished that I could've taken it off.
There was a knock at the front door, he pulled away from me, planting a kiss on my lips before setting me down on the couch. I pouted as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, smoothing out his hair. He tucked his shirt back into his pants as he walked, I followed after him, hiding behind the wall. He opened the front door, faced with an ecstatic greeting.
"Hi there, I'm Jillian. I live across the road – anyway, I was wondering if you and your family wanted to join us for a summer party - we usually throw them when the warm weather arrives." She chuckled, I heard Laurie copy her laugh.
"Well, my wife is away on a business trip at the moment, but my son and I would be happy to join you." He said in a cool voice, I watched him rub the back of his neck. He didn't really want to talk to Jillian, but he knew that he had to remain friendly with them. He didn't want to raise any suspicions with the neighbours, as things would definitely turn sour. If they found out that we had even looked at each other in a way other than father and son, then he would be in prison and I would probably never see him again.
"Oh, I'm glad to hear that you'll join us. We'll look forward to seeing you. I'll introduce you to everybody. I think that your son will get along with mine, he's a very smart young man." She smiled, shaking Laurie's hand. She waved at him as she reached the end of the pathway, he raised his a little, rocking his hand back and forth.
He closed the door, locking it again, rolling his eyes.
"I see you back there." He said, chuckling at me, beckoning me over to him. I smiled, coming out from behind the wall. I held my arms out at him like a toddler, he wrapped his around me, rocking me from side to side. I nuzzled into him, he gently stroked my head. "I bet that you are really excited to spend time with the neighbours. I assume that dear Jillian's son is the idiot that you have a liking for." He smirked.
I scowled, looking up at him, he chuckled as I hit him.
"You shouldn't hit your father William. Don't give me another reason to punish you." He said intomy ear, his voice low enough to make me shudder. I nodded, biting my bottom lipas he lifted my chin. He smiled, planting a kiss on my cheek.
