Chapter 13 : Greed, in the end, fails even the greedy

Venice's POV:

"His name is Dagon," Rain said, as he walked into my room, where I was sitting with Fah and Pai. We all looked up at him. "Who are you talking about?" I asked him, completely puzzled. "I found Greed," he said, the look on his face completely blank. We all stared at him. I was pretty sure he had not visited the Lake of Mirrors. He couldn't do that without Zander and the Goddesses anyway. And after we had come back from Ireland. I didn't want to think about how I had spent the hours after coming back from there. Rain had slumped into my arms, and Michael, Gabriel and Zander had brought all of us back.

I had laid Rain on the couch of the Grand Room, and Lady Avani had taken over from there. He had been pale and almost lifeless. Seeing him like that, as if almost dead, made me feel so much like I was in the hospital once again. I was in an absolute panic. I am pretty sure it was visible on my face because Sky reached out and touched my arm. "He is fine. Just tired. Using this much energy, that too of an almost dark kind, just took a lot out of him," he said. "If that's the case, maybe I should make the kills," I said, hating how my voice cracked. I could not, would not lose him again, even if I had to rail at the Gods.

I continued to watch his face. I didn't know if whatever Lady Avani was doing was working or not. "Venice," she said suddenly. "Yes Lady Avani," I replied, not taking my eyes off Rain. "You need to step close and hold his hand," she said. I quickly did that. "Call his name," she said. "Rain? Rain, open your eyes sweetheart," I softly whispered. His eyes flickered open. They were their usual and beautiful light hazel, not the blazing red they were on the battlefield. "How do you feel baby?" I continued to speak softly. "Let me sit up P'Phayu," he whispered back. I helped him up and shifted so that he could rest against me. "What exactly happened out there Rain?" Rick asked. He sounded as worried as I was feeling.

"Nothing happened Rick. I just used a lot of energy, a bit of it dark. It just tired me out. That's all," Rain smiled. I didn't utter a word, or open my mind to his. I wanted to talk to him in private, and face to face. "Venice, you should take Rain upstairs to rest," Lady Avani said. I nodded at her. I got up and was about to lift him. "I can walk P'Phayu," he said. I shook my head and lifted him and walked upstairs. "Were you too worried?" he asked. I couldn't say anything. "Phi? Are you angry? I am sorry." He looked at me with pleading eyes. I looked at him but I stayed silent. Once we reached his room, I settled him into bed, and turned around to leave. "Phi," he grabbed my hand. I stopped, but didn't turn around.

"I am really sorry. I know, I know I was wrong. I should have given you a head's up, but there was no time. It all happened so quickly!" he said. I turned around and looked at him. He immediately sat up. "P'Phayu? Phi, what's wrong?" he asked. He must have seen the tears in my eyes. "Talk to me please?" "You have no idea what I went through today Rain. I just remembered every single moment of the last three years when you lay like one dead in the hospital. It was almost as if I was reliving it. You really can't do this to me, you know?" I said, again hating the crack in my voice. I hated being this vulnerable in front of him, but I was helpless in my misery.

He leaned back and pulled me down to sit next to him, staring at my face as if looking for something. The he suddenly cupped his hands around my face and leaned forward and kissed me and then moved back. I looked at him. "Phayu," he said, in a soft voice, and kissed me again. I held the back of his neck softly and kissed him right back. At first, our kiss was hesitant, because we were both scared of hurting each other. But soon, we lost the hesitancy. I was thrilled that he had kissed me, and a for a moment I was lost. Then we both pulled back. His lips were slightly pink and I controlled my urge to kiss them again. "I am not done scolding you," I said. "I know. I was not distracting you. I was just trying to say that I have your back, and you don't have to hide anything from me, not your fears, not your anger, not your vulnerability. I know I made you worry and I am sorry for that. I wanted to open my mind to you, but I was focusing solely on Jack and I forgot our connection exists! It will not happen next time, I promise! Now can you forgive me?" he asked, with the puppy dog expression that could melt an iceberg at 50 yards!

"Okay, okay, I forgive you. Stop making that face!" I said. How could I stay angry at someone who had just kissed the brains out of my head? And plus, that expression! It was lethal! No one could ever stay angry or say no to that expression on his face. It was seriously a very powerful weapon. "But don't do it again. There should never be a next time!" I admonished. "Okay, I promise. I really do!" he said. "I want you to rest today, as much as possible, okay?" I said. He nodded. "Can you send Sky to me?" he asked. "As long as you don't get up from here! And as long as you eat something healthy," I said. "I don't want to eat anything as of right now. But can you ask Sky to get me a glass of apple juice?" he said. I smiled, nodded and left the room.

"Phi? P'Phayu? Hey! PHAYU!" Rain's prodding jolted me out of my reverie. "Sorry, what were you saying?" I asked, sheepishly. "I found the sin Greed. His name is Dagon, second name unknown. He is currently in Arizona, the site for our next battle. Rak and Muenfah are already looking for a place for us to set down," he continued. "Okay. But how did you know? I don't remember you going to the Lake of Mirrors?" I queried.

"I didn't have to," he said. "I got a vision. Last night. And I have already called in the team for further discussion." I looked at him and wondered what he was thinking. I think I must have stared at him too long, because he snapped his fingers in front of me. "Phayu Venice Theerpanayakul! What the hell are you doing?" I grimaced at him calling my whole name. "What?" I grinned. "Where did you go?" he asked. "I was thinking of you," I said "Thinking what?" he asked. "About kissing you," I said. He glared at me. "Is this the time to be thinking about this? Get up. And go be a king!" A silly giggle escaped him as he came forward and bent close to my ear. "If you be a good king, maybe I will give you another kiss," he whispered, giving me goosebumps.

Sky's POV:

We all sat in the conference room in the basement. It was a big room, and we had temporarily converted it into a war room. I was discussing something with Muenfah when Rain and P'Phayu walked in. A lot of things had changed in the past few months, especially their relationship. I was happy to see my best friend so happy, but I was also scared of what the upcoming months would bring. The trip back from Ireland had been one right out our worst nightmares. We had watched as Rain had collapsed and P'Phayu had carried him back. I knew that he was okay, but it had been hard to see him that way. The panic on Phi's face had been painful to watch. I could see very clearly how much he loved Rain.

He had taken him upstairs after he had woken up and then come back downstairs and told me that he was asking for me. "Take him a glass of apple juice. He is not feeling hungry yet, but he wants to have the juice," he told me. I nodded, and went and got juice for him. Phi had started storing apple juice in the fridge at all times because Rain loved it. When I reached upstairs, Rain was sitting on the window seat, pensively looking out. "Rainy? You okay?" I asked. He turned around and smiled at me. "You kissed him again!" I whisper yelled. He put a finger to his lips and winked at me. "I had to. He was so angry!" he said. "Did you think otherwise? He was so panicked. Poor guy was half dead!" I told him.

He looked back outside. "I know. I was so focused on Jack that I forgot that I had to open my mind to him. I forgot everything. It will not happen next time. I have promised him that," he said to me. "Then promise me also," I said. "I promise Sky. I won't lose sight of the target next time. And I won't forget to reach out too. I may have to give him the next kill. He will never forgive me otherwise," he said. "I must say Rain, I am convinced that he truly loves you. If you had told me this an year ago, I would not have believed it. But now I have no doubts of the love he has for you," I said, as he sighed. "So, why did you call me?" I asked.

"Sky, I saw the next sin in his head as he was dying. It is a guy we don't know. This time. His name is Dagon. Find everything you can about him please? Before I talk to P'Phayu?" he said. "Done," I answered, knowing that he would never say anything to anyone unless he was completely sure.

Rak's POV:

Seeing the Queen fight with that intensity and collapsing soon after had been both a sight to behold and as scary as hell. His power had been off the charts, but it was great to know that we had someone who was so powerful in our corner. Now that we had found the second sin, whom he had seen in a vision, had made it very simple for us. Sky had found all the information he could on Dagon. We had come to know that he was in Arizona, near the Grand Canyon. Another thing Rain had found out for us. I loved it here, in the Kingdom, with the Queen and others, who had given us unlimited and unconditional support. Not once had Muenfah and I felt out of place, or unhappy since we had come here. So if we had to lay down our lives for him, we would do it with pleasure.

"The area in and around the Grand Canyon is just as open and exposed as the Cliffs of Moher, so anywhere we land, we are likely to be visible," Muenfah said, after P'Phayu and Rain had sat down. "So the best way is the element of surprise," Rain said. "Yes. We find out exactly where he is and beard the lion in its den, so to say," I said. Rain and P'Phayu looked at each other, and some kind of silent communication passed between them. Finally they both looked back at us. "Okay, make all the necessary arrangements. We leave as soon as we are ready and we know where this Dagon guy is camping away," P'Phayu said, complete authority in his voice.

This is what made us all surprised. Every single person in the Supernatural world had prayed for the well-being and safe return of the Queen, and wondered what the future held for the royal mates. Somehow, they managed to surprise us. They were not only a force to be reckoned with individually, but also a formidable couple when together. Unlike most of us as couples, Rain and P'Phayu never even showed an inkling of being together, not even the smallest sign, but the fact that they were together was a signpost lit up in neon. No one could keep an iota of doubt that they were mates, and extremely powerful ones to boot.

Rain's POV:

I looked down at the deep abyss that was the Grand Canyon. P'Phayu came and stood beside me. "I hope you remember your promise," he said, an admonishing note in his voice. I had scared the bejesus out of him by collapsing after my fight with Jack. I had promised him that I will not take unnecessary risks this time, and will keep the pathway between our minds open. But I had lied a bit to him, and the others, saying I saw Dagon in a vision. Only Sky knew how I had discovered his identity. I nodded. "P'Phayu?" I said. "Yeah?" "This is never going to get easier, right?" I said, feeling the despair in my voice. "We are good people Rain, especially you. It's not in your nature, our nature, to hurt anyone. We have always lived in peace and believed in it. We never imagined that we will face an evil this tremendous. So we have to do what we can Nangfa. Just hang in there. It will be over soon," he consoled.

"Your Majesties!" we turned around to see one of our warriors running towards us. "The enemy has been sighted," he said, breathless. We immediately moved to our troops. Dagon soon stood before us. "So, you are the Queen we were told so much about. You don't seem like much. Must be terrible to be you. Don't worry, you won't last long enough to see the Devil taking over! The Supernaturals and all their powers will be ours!" he ranted. "Greed, in the end, fails even the greedy. But I will let that pass, because you and I Dagon? We are going to have some fun!" P'Phayu laughed at him. I was surprised to see him so relaxed.

I had thought that after what happened in the previous battle, he would be raging mad. But here he was, completely enjoying himself. In my heart, I was worried he was not taking it seriously. But I could feel his consciousness merging with mine and that made me realise that he was a complete warrior at the point, as deadly and as deathly as I wished him to be. He was not Phayu at the point. He was Venice, the King of Supernaturals, and he would never let us down. I was sure of that with my whole heart. I stood on the ready, Phayu also braced for any attack.

Team's POV:

As we fought the soldiers of the Devil, we also kept an eye on Phayu and Rain, Sky more than anyone. It was not fear, just worry. We were not afraid that they would be harmed, but there was always worry. There was no way we wanted the two of them to be hurt. But maybe we needn't have worried either. They both fought back to back, their movements synchronised to the point of a deadly dance. Their level of communication never failed to surprise us! They continued to fight back and forth. I could see Dagon getting closer and closer to the royal couple. But they seemed completely unfazed! This time, for this battle, Phayu seemed to have taken the lead.

All of us were engaged in our own battles, when like last time, we all felt time stand still. All the fine hair on or body stood on end, and there was a distinct whisper of power in the air. We all looked towards the Royal couple and saw an absolutely bright light surrounding them. A deep silver coloured metal made its way into Phayu's waiting hands, looking like an arrow or a small spear, its tip sparkling pink and green in the sunlight. As soon as it completely formed, Phayu reached for it, and with deadly and precise accuracy, struck the jugular of the sin! As the blood sprouted, he leaped back, and we all watched as he fell to the ground, with no chance to recover. He struggled for a few minutes, then completely stopped moving. We all moved closer as the Devil's minions fled from the field, having no leader they could take orders from.

Phayu's weapon

Dagon's eyes had filmed over white. Sky approached him, and placing his hand on the sin's head, chanted something under his breath. For a moment, the sin sparkled in metallic hues, but then it completely subsided. This had happened in the Cliffs of Moher also. But I didn't have time to wonder, as Pai moved forward and pulled the arrow like weapon from Dagon's neck, and gave it to Rain. He looked at it for a moment and then wiped the blood that was on it on Dagon's pants. We thought nothing could shock us anymore, but when we saw the weapon simply disintegrating in his hand, we were stunned! "Michael, Gabriel, Zander," he called out. "Let's go," he commanded, and we were whisked back into the Royal Mansion.

Venice's POV:

I had felt Rain's worry, but I was still calm. I had seen what had happened with Jack. The angrier he had become, the more sloppy his game was. But I was not going to make that mistake. I was determined not to let my mate down, and I knew that if I needed his faith in me intact, I needed to be at the top of everything. Rain settled with his back to me, as both of us moved together towards Dagon. We were fighting the Devil's minions, and we could feel the difference from last time. They were definitely deadlier this time, and seemed better trained as well.

I truly wished I could hideRain somewhere, but there was no way I could do that. Rain was the very lynchpin of the Prophecy. "Concentrate!" he hissed in my mind, as we both pivoted , his battle axe cutting down the head of the minion on his left and his sword swinging to his right. He jumped in the air to do the same to a winged demon that flew towards us, and I swept under him to take the legs off another one, who then tried to get to us by crawling but before I could do anything Sky had skewered his sword into its heart. "Phi, it's time," Rain whispered, as we went back to back again. "Tell me what I have to do," I said. He opened up his mind, and I saw the weapon we needed and what we needed to do with it. I was about to speak when he did. "I will make it for you, but it will rise towards you Phi,"he said. I nodded in my head, and I could feel his laser like focus, even though he was battling demons at the same time. Suddenly a weapon flew towards me, a glinting spear like thing with a sparkling tip. I snatched it out of the air and jumped straight towards Dagon, thrusting it into his jugular. Blood spurted out and he battled for air, trying to find a way to escape, but there was none. His eyes finally filmed over and the minions escaped, just like the last time. We were ready to return home, knowing this time the battle wounds were worse than last time, which meant training had just gotten harder. It was time to put our backs to it. I looked at Rain and knew that he was thinking the same. We looked at the Guardians. "Let's go back. We will do what needs to be done once we return," Avani said. We both nodded, knowing they were right, and before we knew it, we were home.
