Divided We Fall
It all comes down to this.
Two football teams make their way up to the scrimmage line, facing each other as their front lines lean forward into the starting position.
"It's been quite the game..."
The snapper puts his hand on the football.
"Full of ups and downs, touchdowns and fumbles, I've never really seen a game like it."
On the sidelines, Sarah, Pandora, Nina and the other cheerleaders were cheering David and his team on. However, Pandora has been keeping an eye on Sarah, who has doing some strange things.
"Both teams are at each other's throats. There's been quite a few near fights breaking out that the referees have had to break up."
Just as the snapper had his hand on the ball, Sarah stops and watches intently. She takes one of the pom-poms off her right hand and a red electrical energy jumps off her hand. Pandora looks towards the snapper, despite the distance, she can see a bit of a spark on the snapper's hand. A similar spark ripples across the offensive line and even the quarterback.
As David calls for the snap, a strange thing happens. The ball goes sailing off and away from anywhere near the quarterback. Suddenly, the defense quickly breaks through the offensive line, one in particular breaking through and heading directly for the ball as the offense scrambles to deal with the failed snap. The defensive player manages to jump on the ball and smothers it, making sure his team takes over possession of the ball.
"Wow... what a turn over."
The player who managed to grab the ball gets up, taunting the opposing team who just lost possession. David and a few of the other players get in his face, making the player's teammates rush to his defense and creating something of a stand off.
Things are getting very, very tense.
"Just when you thought you'd seen it all... I don't know what else to say, this is the strangest game I've ever seen."
Despite the turn of events, Sarah cheers and so do almost all of her team. Pandora on the other hand, has stood and watch it all even though she should be cheering with the rest of the team. In the stands, both sides are yelling and shouting insults at each other.
The only two people who aren't joining in are Pandora's parents, Jove and Uni. They're sitting patiently, trying to avoid antagonizing people.
Eventually, Sarah and the rest of the cheerleaders stop cheering while the confusion of what just happened gets worked out on the field. Kat sidles up to Pandora.
"What happened to that girl Jemma? I figured she would've come to support her big savior." asks Kat.
"I don't know, maybe she didn't feel comfortable supporting people who tried to attack her." Pandora fires back, adding "And I'm not a savior. I'm just trying to do the right thing."
"Well good, because we won't need one after tonight. Not if everything goes the way Sarah wants. She's going to be the only savior we'll ever need." declares Kat.
"Yeah? What makes you say that?" inquires Pandora.
Kat can't help but smile at Pandora not knowing, "You'll see."
Both of them look towards Sarah, Kat with a smile and Pandora suspiciously, who is being held up by her teammates as if she's injured, breathing heavily.
"What's wrong with her?" inquires Pandora.
"She's saving us. If you think that's wrong, then you're even crazier than I thought." insists Kat.
Pandora heads directly for Sarah as she's moved to sit on a bench because she needs to rest. As Pandora sits with her, Sarah keeps clenching and unclenching her fist, occasionally having red electricity coming out of her fingers.
"Damn it!" exclaims Sarah.
"What's wrong?" Pandora asks the obvious.
"Nothing... I just... I need it to work a little bit longer." Sarah says as if Pandora is supposed to understand.
"This is part of your big plan isn't it? The things you've been doing to the crowd all night." Pandora says.
"Yeah but... it's not working and... I don't understand why it's making me so weak."
"Then stop. I can see what it's doing to you. You can't handle it." insists Pandora, clearly concerned.
"I can do it. I have to." Sarah fires back.
"Do what exactly? Why are you trying to force people to attack each other? I thought you wanted to bring people together." asks Pandora.
"Which is why this has to work. In order to be brought together, they first have to be torn apart." explains Sarah, still trying to get her energy discharge to work.
"What?" a clearly confused Pandora asks.
"Nothing brings people together like a big tragedy. And nothing makes people choose sides like football. If I can get them to tear each other apart, they'll come together in the aftermath. And if I can do it often enough, it could just make the world a better place." elaborates Sarah.
"Even if it kills you?" suggests a concerned Pandora.
"Especially if it kills me." declares Sarah.
There's a long moment of silence between them, despite the insanity of the crowd around them, Pandora clearly weirded out by the idea, "I understand."
Pandora leaves her side, heading straight for where her parents are sitting.
"I don't understand." Pandora says as she gets close to her parents.
"What?" asks Uni.
"With Jemma, the spirit made her stronger and gave her more powers. But with Sarah... she's getting weaker." says Pandora.
"We told you, different spirits affect people differently. But this might be the best time for you." suggests Jove.
"How?" Pandora wonders.
"If she's getting weaker, then she's at her most vulnerable. The spirit is drawing its energy from her and may manifest soon. Do you have The Box?" Uni explains.
"It's... nearby." says Pandora, "What about the personal thing? The thing I'm supposed to use to draw out the spirit?"
Jove points to the scene around them, "It's right here. This is the thing she cares about most. You can use that. Go get it. Now is the time."
Pandora looks towards Sarah who is still trying to make her powers work. Then she heads off around the corner, under the bleachers where Jemma had hidden The Box. She opens the electrical box and grabs the mystical Box inside. It's glowing red, fading in and out. Quickly, she heads back towards the field and finds Sarah.
"Sarah, I can help you." the teenager with a destiny insists, The Box in hand and clearly visible.
Sarah stands up to face Pandora, though weakly, "What do you mean?"
"You're hurting yourself with what you're doing. I can make it better." Pandora says as she tries to close the gap between them but Sarah backs off.
"I don't want to make it better. I want to save the world." Sarah says, matching any advance Pandora makes although it clearly takes a lot out of her.
"I know you do. And I get it, but this isn't the way to do it." Pandora fires back.
"What do you know?" Sarah says with an upset tone.
Pandora looks at The Box as it glows, the power of the glow slowly getting weaker, "Trust me, I know... I know what it's like to have to sacrifice things you want for the greater good... and I'm sorry."
To finally close the gap, Pandora rushes Sarah with The Box in front of her, tackling Sarah to the ground. Pandora falls on top of her, The Box between them, and as soon as it's pressing against both of them, a red energy bubble starts to build out from the mystical object. Eventually, it envelops both of them, before spreading out around the field, hitting everyone in sight.
On the ground, Sarah's eyes glow more red then they've ever been as the spirit is drawn out of her. As it starts to go into The Box, a black light mixes with it and the bright red glow becomes darker. Pandora's eyes glow the darker red color, mixed with the black for a moment then it is drawn out of her.
All around them, the crowd calms down to the point that they are no longer at each other's throats. The players on the field do as well and go back to playing the game. After a few long moments, Pandora lifts herself off Sarah, sitting on the field grass next to her and pulls The Box to the side.
"How are you feeling?" the teenager with a destiny asks.
Sarah takes a deep breath, slowly pulling herself up to a sitting position before realizing she's got her full strength back. She raises her hand and tries to make the electricity come out, but nothing happens.
"It's... it's gone." Sarah says, getting more and more upset as she continues to fail to make the electricity happen.
"Trust me, it's better that way. You're going to be fine." Pandora responds as she gets up from the field, picking up The Box in the process and walking away.
