Controlled Chaos
Barely controlled chaos is everywhere.
A car pulls up to the school and parks in the Principal's parking spot. Pandora and Jove get out. In front of them is a still partially vandalized school with graffiti and physical damage to various benches and walls and enclosed gardens all around the outside of the school. Quite a few of the students are busy trying to clean it up. Some of them are washing graffiti off, others are picking trash up, while others are trying to make repairs to the enclosed gardens and trees.
"Wow, looks like the clean up is going pretty well. You really got them all to pitch in? You didn't have to give them detention?" asks Pandora.
"I did for a fair amount of them, but a lot of them volunteered. It seems the students here have a healthy dose of school spirit. And I suspect that a not small amount feel guilty for the things they did while under the control of the Horme spirit Jemma was possessed by." explains Jove.
"How does that work exactly? You said that Jemma would remember what she did but not why." Pandora wonders as she and her father make their way into the school, walking past many of her classmates who are cleaning up.
Jove continues with his explanation, "And it's mostly the same with everyone else. The majority of people don't believe in spirits and magic and all the things that are out there in the world. So they just dismiss their behavior. They assume it was something they took or come up with some random explanation. Most of the time they're right, but not when a spirit is involved."
They enter the school and much like outside, there's quite a bit of a mess. Paper from ripped school books and spray painted lockers are everywhere.
"Are you sure I shouldn't be helping them?" asks Pandora, obviously concerned.
"You did help. Your job was the keep the spirit at bay and return it to The Box as quickly as you could. That's what you did to make things better." insists Pandora's father.
Pandora comes back at him, "I guess, but I did kinda cause it to happen in the first place. I opened The Box at the party I was throwing. If I hadn't, none of them would've been possessed and none of this would be happening."
Jove turns to his daughter and it makes her stop with him, "People made their own choices Dora. Spirits like Horme don't create ideas, they simply lowered the inhibitions of people that kept them from doing what they wanted. Not all spirits will be like that."
"What about this new one? What will it be like?" asks Pandora.
"There's no way to know for sure without more information. We told you, every spirit is different." insist Jove.
Pandora sighs, "And you're sure there's no manual for this right?"
He smiles at his daughter, "Sadly, no. Your mother and I are the closest thing to a manual you'll ever find."
Pandora watches her father for a few long moments.
"You'll be fine honey. Just keep your eyes open and you'll see it eventually." Pandora's father suggests, "Now go, be a normal high school teenager."
The young woman with a destiny smiles halfheartedly at her father, "Fine."
Her father heads off to his office as Pandora turns to her locker. She opens it and starts rummaging through her books for her first class of the day. As she pulls out her first book and closes her locker, Jemma is standing there. The tension between them is very obvious and neither is sure what to say and who will speak first.
"Oh... uh, hey..." Pandora attempts.
"Hey? That's what you're going to go with?" says a clearly upset Jemma.
"Isn't that usually what you say to someone when you meet them?" responds Pandora with an attempt to lighten the mood.
Jemma isn't going there, "Well that depends on whether you've basically been ghosting them for the past week after you get into a pretty heavy make out session with them. Then you apparently save them from making some really stupid decisions by kissing them. What's the proper greeting for that?"
It takes Pandora a moment to answer, "Hey, how are you?"
Jemma takes a deep breath.
"I'm sorry, it's just... I don't really understand what happened the last few weeks. It's like I became a completely different person." explains Jemma.
"But you're back to being normal now right?" asks Pandora.
"Yeah, I guess. I mean, I feel different because of all the stuff I did. But whatever it was that made me do them? It's... not there anymore." says Jemma.
"Good, I'm glad. I was kinda worried." suggests Pandora.
"Is that why you've been avoiding me? I sent you a bunch of DMs but you never responded." wonders Jemma.
"Well, yeah, sorta... also, I kinda made a pretty big confession to you on the roof and..."
Jemma cuts Pandora off, "Right, yeah... I'm really sorry about how I handled that. What you choose to do and who you want to do it with is totally up to you. I hope you'll let me plead temporary... whatever that was that made me do those things and say what I said."
"Sure, why not?" Pandora says with a smile before adding "Of course... the things we did do? I can't say I would mind if we did them again some time."
There's a pause as Jemma smiles at the thought, "Really?"
Pandora shrugs with a bit of a grin.
"Okay..." confirms Jemma, "But... what exactly did happen? I'm still not entirely sure what came over me."
"I don't know, maybe I just have that kind of effect on people?" Pandora says, attempting to evade the question.
That makes Jemma smile. They start to move away from Pandora's locker.
"Maybe you do..." begins Jemma "But I still think we should find out. I mean, what if it happens again or something?"
"Are you planning on going crazy and asking someone to be in a threesome with us?" Pandora asks with a mischievously playful grin.
Jemma takes a moment to answer, "No..."
"Then I think we're good." reassures Pandora.
"But, I mean... I wasn't the only one who was affected. It's like whatever I did was spreading somehow. What if I'm the only one that got better?" asks Jemma.
They pass one of the student volunteers who is cleaning a door with some spray paint on it.
"You really think he looks like he's going to go insane?" Pandora asks, again trying to deflect the topic with a playful attitude.
Jemma sighs, "I guess not. I'd still really like to know what it was."
"Look, it's like you said. We'll just chalk it up to... whatever it was and move on with our lives. Deal?" Pandora asks.
"Sure."
Suddenly, the double doors to the front entrance Pandora just came through open and Sarah walks through in her full cheerleader uniform. She's follows quickly by Nina and Kat, who themselves are followed by the rest of the cheerleader squad, all of them dressed like Sarah. They walk down the hall towards Pandora and Jemma like a flock of eagles in formation but with an army mentality, charging forward as if they own the place. Other students, even the ones in the middle of cleaning, stop to get out of their way because they seem to refuse to break formation. Sarah and her team eventually pass by Pandora and Jemma as they get out of the way. It isn't long before the team pass them by.
"Well that's weird." Jemma points out.
"What is?" Pandora responds with a question.
"They're all in uniform." says Jemma.
"Aren't they all on the same team?" asks Pandora.
"Well, yeah but... they don't normally come to school like that. Especially not on a day like today." Jemma explains.
"Why not? What's so special about today?"
"The team lost last night. The football team I mean. They have this tradition that, if they lose, they don't wear the uniforms until the next pep rally. Something about needing to earn back their school spirit or something." Jemma continues.
"But they're wearing them the night after a lost game." Pandora says.
"Looks like it... maybe it's some kind of new tradition?"
Pandora watches as Sarah and her team continue down the hall. They pass by the sociology class, where Hermes is standing outside watching the cheerleaders pass. Once they do, Hermes looks right at Pandora with a suspiciously serious look before a smile comes over his face and he turns to go into his classroom. Pandora watches him intently.
"Yeah, maybe." says Pandora with a suspicious tone before trying to brighten up, "Uh, I... I just realized that I need to... do something before class. I'll catch up with you later okay?"
She starts heading towards the sociology class without waiting for Jemma's response.
"Okay..." Jemma says, curious about what caused the sudden change.
Pandora reaches the sociology room and goes inside. Hermes is standing at the teacher's desk, going through some of the papers on it. The room is otherwise empty.
"What are you doing here?" Pandora asks almost with an accusation behind it.
"Nice to see you too Pandora. Open anything recently?" Hermes says with a sinister tone before actually looking at her, "Oh, right... you already did that didn't you?"
"Are you going to answer my question or not?" demands Pandora.
"Well, this is what's known as a school, and where you are right now is a classroom. It's where students learn things... or at least that's the idea. I mean, everything's on the internet now so it's not like the information isn't out there." Hermes jokes.
Pandora doesn't say anything. It makes Hermes rolls his eyes and sighing.
"I'm a teacher here, I'm preparing a lesson." Hermes points out.
"But... you're not. I mean, you're a spirit. A corrupted spirit. Why would you be teaching at a high school?" Pandora asks with deep concern.
"What better way to corrupt others then to get them while they're young?" Hermes poses the question, "All those young, impressionable minds waiting to be filled with knowledge. Where else would I want to be?"
"Is that what you did to Sarah and the cheerleaders? You corrupted them somehow?" supposes Pandora.
"No, that was you remember? I'm not the one who opened The Box. You were the one who unleashed the spirits within. If you're looking for someone to blame, I recommend the mirror." says Hermes.
Pandora watches Hermes for a few moments. The tension clearly visible on both of their faces, though more from Pandora then Hermes.
"I'm going to stop you. Whatever it is that you're doing, I'll make it stop. You're never getting your hands on The Box again." insists Pandora.
"Why would I want that? You already gave it to me once. I got what I needed from it. All I need to do now is wait." Hermes says with a happy look on his face.
Pandora turns to leave, but before she gets out the door...
"How's Jemma by the way?" Hermes asks, clearly enjoying himself.
She stops dead in her tracks.
"Seems like you two are getting along again. It's nice." finishes Hermes.
The young high school student turns back and goes right up to Hermes.
"If you touch her, so help me..." threatens Pandora.
"Why would I do that? You already rescued her from the Horme spirit. She's just a regular student now. I was just asking because you seemed to get really close. It would be a shame to see that fall apart." Hermes says with a weirdly nice tone.
Pandora glares at Hermes for a long silent moment. Suddenly, the bell rings.
"Looks like that's the first bell. You better get to class. You don't want to be late do you?" suggests Hermes, continuing his tone from before.
Again Pandora stays silent, glaring at Hermes intently. Students from Hermes' sociology class start to file their way into the room. It makes Pandora back off a little.
"You wouldn't want to get detention now would you?" Hermes threatens.
Pandora eventually stops glaring and turns to leave, exiting the class.
"They really need to make a manual for this."
