Chapter 2

After a whole lot of convincing from Tony, Peter had finally agreed to stay with the Starks for two more weeks.

In those two weeks, Tony left the hospital, he retired from the Avengers to spend time with his family, made a red and gold prosthetic for his arm and attended physical therapy (Much to his disappointement). Peter called May every day, and she was happy for him to stay with the Starks for a bit longer.

All the guilt and weirdness he had been feeling was gone, after two very long pep talks from Tony and Pepper.

"Hey, kid, will you hand that screwdriver?"

Peter looked up, and saw Tony with an agitated expression on his face, prosthetic out, waiting for the screwdriver. Peter quickly grabbed it and handed it to the engineer.

He looked over at what Tony was working on, and it looked like an Iron Man figurine, with actual jet repulsors. "Maguna, is this what you wanted?" Tony asked, finishing off the figurine and holding it up to show Morgan who was busy drawing on the ground of the workshop.

The four year old looked up and shook her head. "No. I wanted a Spiderman one."

Peter's cheeks flushed as Tony looked at his daughter, dejected and shocked. "You told me you wanted an Iron Man one!" he exclaimed.

Morgan shook her head again. "No, daddy. I said you wanted a Spiderman one. Remember?" she asked. Tony groaned and Morgan's eyes lit up. "Can you make me a Spiderman one please, instead of a Tin Can one?"

Tony scowled at the name 'Tin Can'. "Fine," he grumbled, setting the Iron Man figurine aside. "This'll be for me. I'll make you a Spiderman one with working webshooters." He grabbed a Spiderman doll and started working on it.

Later that day, Tony insisted on taking Peter from the lake house to May's place. Peter would've gone himself, but Tony said she had a different address. Of course, Morgan came as well, excited to join. Pepper would've came, but she had to attend a meeting for Stark Industries so she said goodbye before she had to leave, like Happy and Rhodes.

It took about an hour by Quinjet to arrive at the Avengers Tower which some of the Avengers had moved to, and another ten minutes to get to May's new place. It was an apartment, but the block seemed to be much larger, and a lot fancier. How May had afforded it, Peter didn't know but he was excited to see her again.

Morgan was skipping next to her dad as they walked into the elevator. Only then Peter noticed she was wearing a navy blue jacket with the Spiderman symbol on the centre. Tony gave Peter a small smile. "Has anything changed?" he asked, and Tony sucked in his breath.

"A bit. But May can't wait to see you again." Peter nodded, heartrate getting faster as the elevator stopped and Tony and Morgan walked out. Peter quickly followed and Tony knocked on a door to an apartment. Morgan pressed the doorbell (With Tony's help) and the trio waited outside.

The door opened with a click, and Peter came face to face with May. She still had her long, dark brown hair and warm brown eyes, but their were greys in her hair and bags under her eyes. She was beaming. "Oh, Peter," she murmured, pulling him into a hug which Peter obliged. She pulled away and addressed the two behind them. "Tony, Morgan, please come in," she said, smiling. The group walked in and May directed them to the living room.

The whole apartment looked quite posh and expensive, much to Peter's surprise. "Peter, I have a surprise for you," May said, smiling brightly. As she said that, a tall man walked in, placing himself next to May. He had dark brown hair, gelled back, and bright blue eyes and a warm smile.

"Hey, Pete!" he greeted, holding a hand out. Peter froze, frowning at the man that somehow knew his name. May gave him a look and he quickly shook his hand. "Got quite a strong grip there."

Peter nodded awkwardly, keeping his head lowered. "Peter," May said, her voice in a slight warning tone. "This is my husband - Logan Williams." Suddenly Peter's blood went cold. He felt his heartrate spike at those words. My husband. Has May replaced Ben?

Tony gently put a hand on Peter's shoulder. "You alright, kid?" he asked softly.

"Y-yeah," he stammered. "Just...not expecting that. But I guess a lot of things can change in five years, right?" He offered a forced smile at Logan who returned it and glanced at Tony who looked slightly pained, metal red and gold fingers playing with his jacket coat. Morgan was sitting on his lap, smiling happily, swinging her legs back and forward.

"Not only that," May continued. "Sofia! Lisa!" Peter froze and Tony locked eyes with his, noticing his shock.

"You alright, buddy?" he asked. Peter nodded, eyes focused on the two girls which were running into the room. One seemed about Morgan's age. She had hair the same colour as May's, and soft blue eyes. The younger seemed to be two, and had short dark brown hair and brown eyes.

May grinned. "These  are your cousins, Peter. Sofia-" She gestured to the four year old. "-and Lisa." Peter nodded again, feeling an odd pang in the stomach.

He felt a hand rub circles on his back and looked up at Tony. I'm fine, he mouthed, to which Tony nodded. "Hi Morgan!" Sofia greeted. "Do you want to play with my dolls with me?" Morgan narrowed her eyes before a small nod from her dad and followed the other four year old into a room.

Logan was holding Lisa on his lap. The two were both smiling but something about Logan made him uneasy. It's just nerves, he assured himself. It's just nerves, everything will be alright.

"So, Tony-" Logan started but was interrupted by Tony.

"Mr. Stark. We're not there yet," he said. Peter smothered a chuckle by chewing the inside of his cheek.

Logan nodded. "Right, Mr. Stark, Maybear and I were just wondering how everythings going with your..." he trailed off, gesturing to Tony's right arm. Maybear? Peter wondered, eyebrows creased.

"My prosthetic?" Tony demanded, voice undertoned with hostility. "It's going alright, thanks for asking." There was something so stiff about Tony's words that made Peter feel a bit queasy. The hostility in his voice obviously didn't help. Hopefully May and Logan didn't know him enough to tell.

May chuckled. "That's good to know. Anyway, Pete, Tony and I have been talking this week, and that shared guardianship we've been doing in the past can't really go on since he's moved so far away. So, we decided to let you choose who you wanted to stay with because, I'd trust Tony to take care of you, now that he has Pepper and Morgan, but we'd love to give you a choice."

Peter was sure his jaw had hit the floor. "What do you-what do you-what do you mean?" he stamered, ignoring Logan staring at him.

Tony leaned back in his seat. "She means she would like you to have a permanent home at either my place in Georgia, or here. Your choice," he explained briefly. Peter was shocked. Why would May even suggest that? The two of them were there own little family. Now May had made a bigger family for herself, with two daughters and a husband. She wasn't even a Parker anymore. She was a Williams. And that meant Peter was the last Parker left.

But May was still family, not matter what.

Meeting the genius' eyes, Peter said a sincere, "Thank you so much for the offer, Mr. Stark, but... I think I'd like to stay a bit closer to May, and my friends, if you know what I mean?" Tony nodded, giving Peter the courage to continue. "I can still see you... right?"

"Of course, kid," he exclaimed, masking a slightly hurt expression with a smirk. "I mean, I know I'm a while away, but you can always get an Avenger to take you to my place by quinjet, ya know?"

Peter nodded, beginning to feel much more guilty than he did a second ago.

"I'll let you two men have a chance to get to know each other and I'll take Peter to his room," May said. "See you guys."

She stood up and Peter did too, and he followed her into an unfamiliar room.

It had pale blue walls, and a mattress in the corner near the door with dark grey sheets and a matching pillow. There was an oak desk against the wall, opposite his bed - mattress - with a laptop on. Scattered around the walls were some posters.

"Do you like it?" May asked eagerly. "Your room? I made sure to add some posters of that show you're obsessed with - Star Trek."

Peter couldn't help the way his face fell and the fact that his heart sunk a little when May spoke. "It's... Star Wars," he corrected, feeling all sorts of emotions because how could May forget about that?

Oh right, you were dead for five years, he reminded himself.

Upon seeing May frown a little, Peter quickly said, "But Star Trek is good too. Just Star Wars has always been my favourite."

"Oh," May said bluntly. "Well, Tony did give you a new StarkPhone with all your contacts and apps on them."That was off topic, Peter thought as May handed him the new phone. She smiled. "I'll let you talk with your friends."

Peter held the phone in his hands and sat on his mattress when May left the room. He skimmed through his contacts until he found the name Guy in the chair. He choked back a sob and pressed the call button, waiting anxiously for Ned to pick up.

"Peter?"

Peter almost burst into tears at the voice of his best friend. "Hey Ned."

"God, it's-it's really you?"

"Yeah, Ned. It's-it's me," Peter whispered, afraid his voice would break if he spoke any louder. "D-did you-"

"N-no, I...I didn't snap away."

And then Peter felt sick. Tears sparkled in his eyes and his heart throbbed because Ned, Ned, was still alive when he wasn't. And that meant he would be 21 years old. He could drink while Peter couldn't even drive.

"Oh."

"Yeah."

"Are you in college?" He didn't know why he had asked that. "Did you graduate from Midtown? Did MJ snap? Did any of your family either?"

A sigh was all Ned gave before he spoke. "Y-yeah, I'm in college. MIT, Tony helped my family afford to get me there. MJ's...MJ's with me here in MIT."

No. Peter felt like he'd throw up. Tears threatened to fall. His best friends were at college for goodness sake. And he wasn't. He missed out on five years of living.

"Oh. Okay, I-I have to go now."

He hung up before Ned could even say goodbye.

Peter threw the phone across the room and pulled his knees to his chest, burying his head in them, letting his tears spill. Why, Ned? Why you, and not me? He knew he was being selfish. But he also knew that his best friends were in college and that didn't feel fair.

"Pete, can I come in?" came the voice of Tony.

"S'ure," Peter mumbled, wiping the tears off his face. The door opened and Tony walked in, looking annoyed. "How was your conversation with Logan?"

Tony feigned hurt and chuckled. "Not even a 'hello' for your boss? And, answering your question, young padawan, the little chit chat was boring."

Cracking a smile, Peter pressed his back against the wall and Tony sat down next to him with a heaving sigh. "Probably not gonna be seeing you for a while so May's letting me hang with you for a bit," he explained, ruffling Peter's hair. "What's wrong kid? You look miserable."

"Ned," he choked out, and Tony blanched. "And-and MJ..." Peter looked up at Tony, teary eyed and vision blurred. "Why didn't you tell me?" His voice was barely a whisper, but Tony seemed to hear.

His dark brown eyes were full of anguish. "I should've told you, but you were already distraught and I didn't know when to break the news to you."

Peter didn't say a word. He couldn't. He felt like his throat wasn't working and he didn't want to have Tony's pity. "Kid," Tony breathed. "I just want to make sure you're okay."

"I'm fine," Peter spat out with gritted teeth. "I'll go back to Midtown - be fine - then graduate in two years and everything'll be just fine."

Tony patted Peter on the back. "If you want, I could always get you a place in MIT now-

"No," Peter growled, his tone making even Tony flinch. "Just leave me alone."

"But-"

"Leave. Me. Alone." Tony stood up, shooting Peter a concerned look.

"Just so you know, kid, I'm always here for you," he said, waving his phone and forcing a smile on his face. "Lov- I'll see you soon, buddy."

Peter didn't answer, and Tony was already gone.

Staring at the floor, Peter felt his heart pang in his mentor's absense. Ned - gone. MJ - also gone. May - moved on. Tony - pushed away. By me.

He kinda wished he didn't force him to leave.
