Chapter 2
On the bus ride to school I didn't talk to Brooke. I had my headphones in and I was listening to the song i was auditioning to on loop. I was certain people around me could hear the song, but that was the least of my issues. The song I would sing was You Found Me by The Fray. It had always been my favorite song, and I meant a lot to me.
The whole school day I couldn't focus. I had never sang in front of anyone besides my family and close friends. Now I have to in front of judgemental adults and if I make the the show, hundreds of peers.
After school I made my way to the auditorium where the auditions were. Maddie was also auditioning, but she was dancing. We all knew that she would make it. I saw her in the hallway. I stopped her.
"Hey Maddie, good luck." I said, faking a smile.
"Yeah whatever," she started. "You need it more than me."
Ouch. That was beyond bitchy. But she's right.
Maddie was number 17 and I was number 20. When her number was called she walked Into the room, smirking at me beforehand. I heard the music come on and I could see her shadow through the curtain. Looks like she did perfect as always. I had 2 more people before me, and I was a nervous wreck. My palms cramped and were sweaty, my stomach hurt. I felt like throwing up. "It's just an audition" I thought to myself. Suddenly, my number was called.
I walked onto the stage and introduced myself.
"Hi im Mackenzie Ziegler and I'll be singing the song You Found Me by The Fray" I implied. The judges smiled at me and I cleared my throat.
I found God, on the corner of first and amistad, where the west, was all but won
My voice got stronger and stronger as I prepared for the chorus. I moved around a lot, that was just my thing. When the chorus came I took the mic off the stand, and really got into it.
Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me, lying on the floor, surrounded, surrounded, why'd you have to wait? Where were you, where were you? just a little late... you found me, you found meeeeeee
As soon as the song finished, the judges clapped.
"That was beautiful. Thank you" the middle judge said and dismissed me. Maddie had already left with mom, and Brooke was waiting outside the curtain.
"Mackenzie!! That was absolutely beautiful." She said. "The best I've ever heard you do."
"Thanks Brookie" I said with a smile, a real one this time. I felt pretty confident with what I just preformed and I hope I will make the show. Me and Brooke walked home together. We lived right across from each other.
When I got home, I changed my clothes, put my hair in a messy bun and played with snapchat filters. There was no dance today, so my night was filled with my family yelling at me and doing chores.
