First Day of Classes: Part 1

I woke up the next day to the sound of Lily's alarm. Great. I got out of bed and looked around. Marlene is still sleeping, Emmeline is up, Lily is turning off her alarm, and I think Alice is in the bathroom. I grab my clothes and wait until Alice comes out. Five minutes later, Marlene still isn't up. Alice just came out of the bathroom, so I walked into it. I went to the bathroom and took a shower. I got dressed into my black skirt, white blouse, Gryffindor tie, and Gryffindor robes. Today I wore black ballerina flats. If you can't already tell, I love wearing flats. However, high heels are the worst invention known to mankind.

I dried my hair quickly because I only had five minutes to get down to the Great Hall for breakfast. I braided my hair into a waterfall braid. Staring into my reflection in the mirror, I changed my hair color to a lighter brown than it was before. I didn't put any makeup on.

I smiled as I checked for any loose flyaways in my brunette hair. Not finding any, I exited the bathroom and was shocked when I saw Marlene rushing into the bathroom right before me. Alice, Lily, and I were the only ones dressed. Lily changed in the bedroom behind her bed curtains. Emmeline was starting on getting ready too, but behind the bed curtains like Lily.

Ten minutes later, we were all ready. Emmeline, Marlene, Alice, Lily, and I walked down the stairs to the common room. I saw my brother, Sirius, Remus, and Peter all talking in four armchairs next to the fireplace. I walk over to them and plop down in James's lap. They all stare at me with their mouths gaping open. I smile and say, "Let's get down to breakfast, shall we?"

All the boys agree. Except Sirius. I wonder why he doesn't want to eat? Maybe it's because of his banshee-like mother. James and Remus are walking forwards with Peter, but Sirius is lagging behind. I walk up to Sirius and grab his hand. I lean my head over towards his ear.

"Are you okay?" I ask.

He sighs. "As much as you can be when you know a Howler is waiting for you at breakfast." I already hate Walburga Black for being a blood-purist inbreed, but know I hate her more.

"I have an idea. How long can she yell for?"

"Well, standard Howlers last for two minutes. Her Howlers can last for roughly eight minutes, and she can yell for that long without breathing."

"Tell me when you can't take it anymore." He nods, confused about what my plan is.

We catch up to the other boys as we enter the Great Hall. Sirius is glancing over at the Slytherin table. I can see the white-blond hair of Luci Malfoy as he smirks at Sirius. I glare at Malfoy and start walking over to the Gryffindor table with Sirius.

I start to put food on my plate. I put three sausage links on my plate along with two Belgian waffles. I put powdered sugar and syrup on the waffles and dig in. I talk with the boys until the mail comes. I see the Black family owl fly in with a crimson red letter in its talons.

I also see my mom and dad's owl fly in with two letters and a box of something, probably sweets.

The Black's owl arrives first. Sirius, sitting next to me, hesitatingly opens the envelope and the crimson letter flies out of the envelope and makes a mouth. I can hear Walburga Black's shrieking. It's now in my nightmares.

"SIRIUS ORION BLACK! HOW  DARE YOU GET SORTED INTO GRYFFINDOR! I AM ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED! YOU ARE NOW ASSOCIATED WITH MUDBLOODS, BLOOD TRAITORS, AND HALF-BREEDS!!!!! I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY WITH YOURSELF! — Oh, and Evan dear, congratulations on making Slytherin. At least SOMEONE knows how to uphold the family's righteous beliefs!!  YOU ARE NOT MY SON, SIRIUS ORION BLACK!!!! YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO YOUR FAMILY, YOU-"

I smirk at the letter and casually pull out my wand. I wave it at the Howler and say, "Incendio." The letter bursts into flames, and I can hear Walburga stuttering out the rest of her letter, with unintelligible shouting coming out of the letter. As she sputters, I pet our owl as she sticks her leg out. I untie the letters from her leg as I look at Sirius. He's laughing. I'm glad that he is happy now. I look at our letters. One is addressed to Sirius, and one is addressed to both James and I. I hand Sirius his letter, and he looks at it with trepidation.

"It's from my mom. It's not a Howler," I say.

I open the letter for me and gently unfurl it. I read the letter.

Dear Jessica and James,

I hope that you have had a good first night at Hogwarts! Congratulations on getting sorted into Gryffindor. I hope that your friend Sirius is doing well with being in Gryffindor instead of Slytherin. Please write us soon! The sweets inside are for you and your friends to enjoy while at Hogwarts. Jessica, the Chocoballs are for you. James, the Chocolate Frogs are for you. I have packed Pumpkin Pasties, Honeydukes chocolate, Ice Mice, Bertie Bott's Beans, and Chocolate Cauldrons.

Love,

Mom and Dad (but Dad didn't write this letter. I did.)

"Have you read your letter? What did it say?" I asked Sirius.

Sirius glances up from the letter and looks at me. "Your parents seem to like me from what James told them. Hey, could I have some Pumpkin Pasties to send to Reg?"

"Sure! Take all of them!! I don't really like them as much; my favorite is Chocoballs. What's yours?"

"My favorite is probably Ice Mice or Chocolate Cauldrons." Sirius takes the Pumpkin Pasties and puts them in his bag. I finish my food and then Professor McGonagall shows up.

"First years: Jessica Potter? James Potter? Sirius Black? Remus Lupin? Peter Pettigrew?"

"We're all here, Professor!" I exclaim, excited for the first day of classes. She hands out our schedules and I turn it over.

I have all of my classes with everyone I had met. This happens normally at Hogwarts; all first year Gryffindors have classes together.

Well, today is Thursday, so I start the day off with Flying Lessons. Great, they're with Slytherin. Yikes. I'd better get to class.

James and I are both really good Chasers, if I don't say so myself. I'm better at scoring than James is, but he's better at passing than I am. We even out. I'm so excited for the flying lessons!! I love flying on a broom. I have the newest Nimbus model, the Nimbus 1000.

Sirius, James, and I basically sprint all the way down to the Quidditch Pitch where the flying lessons take place. I saw Madam Hooch there waiting. I pick a broom that is next to James and Sirius. Remus is next to Sirius while Peter is next to James. Lily is next to Remus.

"Good afternoon, class."

"Good afternoon, Madam Hooch," we responded. I'm so excited!!

"Welcome to your first flying lesson. Well, what are you waiting for? Everyone step up to the left side of their broomstick. Come on now, hurry up. Stick your right hand over the broom and say, Up!"

"Up!!!" I shouted. My broom came to me on my first attempt!! James and Sirius's did too, but Lily, Remus, and Peter's didn't. Remus got his on his third attempt, while Lily got hers after I helped her. That was her fifth attempt. Peter got his on his sixth, and it flew up and smacked him on the face!

Madam Hooch then showed us how to mount our brooms without sliding off the end, and walked up and down the rows, correcting their grips. I was exhilarated when she said that my grip was amazing. I smirked at Malfoy when she told him he'd been doing it wrong for years (A/N: Apparently it runs in the family...). She counted down from three and told us to push off the ground when she blows her whistle. She blew her whistle, and James, Sirius, and I hurtled up into the air. Lily and Peter were slowly going up, but Remus was pretty confident on a broom.

We lined up in alphabetical order and were told to fly a lap around the Quidditch pitch once the person in front of us had finished. I was waiting for my turn impatiently. Sirius was pretty fast; I think he could be a Beater. Lily flew slower than most people, but she was pretty good. Not good enough for the Quidditch team, but good. James went first out of the Potter twins. James hurtled around the pitch as fast as can be, and returned quickly.

When James came back, I pushed up off of the ground and leaned forward. I whipped off through the air, the wind rushing through my ears. My hair was streaming back behind me as I rushed through the pitch. The ground below me was a blur of green. I arrived back at the line of students and leaned back on the broom. I got off, grinning in euphoria. That really was the only thing we did for the lesson.

I walked off towards the castle to get to History of Magic with the boys. That class was terrible; the teacher was a ghost that only talked in a monotone!! I used that time to sleep because Professor Binns, the teacher, had a voice that lulls you to sleep. I slept for two hours (A/N: I'm making it so that every class is an hour, but the Double classes are two hours). Sirius lightly shoved me so that I could wake up before someone sees me sleeping and gives me detention.

"Finally, that class was over. Who listened to him for the whole class?!?" I commented, yawning.

James responded, "Lily does. Some Hufflepuffs did, too. But almost everyone was sleeping or passing notes." I snorted.

I walked to the greenhouses with Sirius, James, Remus, and Peter because I had Herbology next. The Hufflepuffs had the class with us as well. We went into Greenhouse 1, where the professor, Professor Sprout, told us to get into groups of three. I got in a group with James and Sirius.

"First you students will need to learn the Incendio charm. This is a way to protect yourself against the Devil's Snare. Devil's Snare is a magical plant with the ability to constrict or strangle anything in its surrounding environment or something that happens to touch it. A rhyme to help you remember the Devil's Snare hates light and fire is: Devil's Snare, Devil's Snare its deadly fun but will sulk in the sun."

I laugh so hard when she says the Incendio charm. Sirius and James are looking at me like I am crazy, but Remus realizes what spell I had used on Walburga's Howler. He starts to laugh like I am. I choke out a few words, "Incendio... Howler... fire." Sirius and James get this and roar with laughter.

"Mr. Potter, Mr. Black. Care to explain why you are disrupting the class?"

Sirius opens his mouth. "Well, Professor. Jessica here seems to have already mastered the Incendio charm, as my mother's Howler discovered at breakfast this morning." I glare at him.

"Well, Ms. Potter. If you are so good at the charm, how about you demonstrate for the class. On this piece of parchment, please." She hands me a small piece of parchment. The whole class is staring at me. I take my wand out of my robes.

I tap my wand against the parchment. "Incendio," moving my wand in a triangle. The parchment catches fire and burns.

The professor stops the fire by saying, "Aguamenti" and waving her wand in a sideways 'S' shape. That's an interesting charm. "10 points to Gryffindor. Good job Ms. Potter. Well, today we are going to be practicing the Incendio charm. To cast the spell, wave your wand in a triangle shape and say Incendio. Use this charm only on your parchment pieces, and control the amount of fire your spell produces. We don't need to burn the greenhouse down."

I take my parchment and rip it into four pieces. I will use the first two just to cast the normal spell. The last two I will use the Aguamenti charm to try to quench the flame. I cast both spells and they work perfectly fine. I smile proudly. Peter's parchment explodes, causing his face to become black with soot (A/N: I wanted someone to be like Seamus Finnagan).

That's basically all we did in Herbology. The Devil's Snare seems like an interesting yet dangerous plant. Our homework is to write one foot of parchment on the Incendio charm and its uses with the Devil's Snare. I feel like that is going to be easy, but I don't know.

We went into the castle once more to go to Charms class, with Professor Flitwick. He is a quarter goblin; he has to be part goblin because he's so short. Sirius and I sit together with James sitting with Emmeline. Remus is sitting with Peter while Marlene is sitting with Alice. Lily is next to Sirius and I with the guy James and Sirius christened as Snivellus. We are learning the Wingardium Leviosa charm, the charm that makes objects fly or levitate. The wand movement is a swish and flick. Everyone do it now, please." We all swished and flicked our wands until Professor Flitwick started talking again.

"Now, don't forget that nice wrist movement we've been practising! Swish and flick, remember, swish and flick. And saying the magic words properly is very important, too —Never forget Wizard Baruffio, who said 's' instead of 'f' and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest."

"Wingardium Leviosa," I said as I waved my wand at the feather on my desk. It started to rise in the air, and I started to flick my wand around which made the feather go that way too.

"Look here class, Ms. Potter's done it!! Five points to Gryffindor!" I smile at the professor and watch Sirius struggling.

"Sirius, do you want help?" I asked.

"Sure. I don't get what I'm doing wrong."

"You're saying it wrong. It's not leviosaaaar, it's leviosa. Good luck!"

Sirius succeeded on his third attempt; the feather gliding through the air gracefully.

I had gained 15 points to Gryffindor in only four classes. I'm very happy at this.

After this class, we went to lunch.

Author's Note: I'm splitting this day up into two sections because it is getting too long. I don't really know what else to say in this.

QOTD: What do you think would be your best and worst class at Hogwarts?

AOTD: Either Charms or DADA for my best; Potions or History of Magic for my worst
