Chapter 4 -"...what went down between Shane, Jordan and Joey, would you?"
Danny Torent's POV
The British Empire.
I haven't been here in the last two decades, and nothing seemed to have changed.
The men are still narcissistic arsehats, yet they care deeply for their wives and children. There is respect for all the ranks, no matter your gender, but when it comes to the ruling hierarchy, it's different.
The highest families are the Griffins; they are the leading families. The Reynolds is second in command, while the Wellington's were third.
Which explains why Penny's mother, Troy and Marcel were so close, but that was also their downfall. Since they were deemed traitors, they got debunked and slaughtered, except Marcel of course. And the Sandels proved themselves useful and got raised in the ranks.
Over time, it's always a man who rules. I know that sounds bad, but the reason is palpable, they believe that the women of the empire will do nothing but make it fall. That's not what I see when Penny does Deals.
The two of us are in her office examining files to get acquainted with them, to see the bigger picture. We have to prove that she is a worthy leader. It's the only way to keep the ones we love safe.
"Talked to Caleb lately?" She pretends to be very interested in the file she reads as if she didn't just ask me about her boyfriend's health.
"He just came back from New York, and is thinking of coming here to celebrate."
I'm still yet to wrap my mind around their relationship. They both look happy and content with each other; that alone keeps my mind at bay.
Files cloud the air because of how fast she dropped the one in her hand to give me her attention. "Really?"
Her eyes sparkled with excitement, and I bite my cheek to keep myself from smiling.
When she sees that, she stares death in my direction.
"I could have sworn that I was not related to Tiger."
"Same here. Where is Sam today? It's not like him to not be breathing down our necks while preparing us for the takeover."
Sam has been like an itch you can't scratch since we landed back on mother's soil. We sold the land back in America to them, packed and moved here to our family home.
With Jordan and Joey in the cells heavily guarded, I see myself joining in on their torture, but I won't put it past Penny not to stop me. So I don't tell her I have another mission apart from the one Sam wants me to do.
Her kind heart will get her nowhere as far as the people of this place are concerned. But as always, she just has her way of getting things done when need be.
We hear a hard knock on the door. We say at the same time, "Come in."
"Boss, you've got a visitor." A guard walks in.
He steps to the side, and allows a girl with a cloak on her head to come into view.
I reach for my gun at the edge of my belt while Penny does the same under the table. It's the same girl from the wedding. I haven't decided if she is a friend or foe yet.
"Relax, people, I come in peace." The girl says.
The hood on her head masks her face but fails to hide the evil smile that she is sporting.
"I just want to talk, nothing more."
"Feel free," I do a once over and see that the cloak covers her whole body, she could have a bomb strapped to her, but we wouldn't know.
She nudges her head to the open door where the guards have their guns pointed to the back of her head, ready to fire.
Penny rolls her eyes, "Stand down."
They look like they want to argue, but the glare she musters has them lowering their guns and closing the door. I can bet that they are going to monitor this conversation from the other side of that door.
"You may have your seat," Penny says grudgingly.
The girl, or should I say, woman, sits and takes off the hood of her cloak. Her skin is extremely pale. It contrasted with her jet black hair which was in a low ponytail.
"You can call me Rae Jean," She says. "It's nice to meet you, Peyton and Danny." She offers us a small smile.
"What brings you here?" Penny has her shoulders squared as she looks Rae Jean up and down.
"I come with information, but more importantly, I want a deal." She states.
"And why would we want to make a deal with you?"
She plays with her nails on the desk, "It's for your good. You have the present Don of the Spanish Mafia in your cells. Do you think the Spanish will be happy about that?"
"Not that it's any of your business, but we are already working on it." Penny's nostrils flare.
Never one to back down from a challenge, Penny can lie in any situation. I'll give her that.
"Stubborn and naïve, just like your mother." She held back a sly grin.
"Excuse me?"
I'm not sure whose glare has more malice, mine or Penny's.
"Troy told you what happened in the hospital. I was the one who tried to stop her from dying. Valentía was the main nurse, but I snuck in for the sake of Troy. It was planned for Faith to die that night. I was able to stop her from killing you and your sister, but I was too late."
Penny inhaled heavily, trying to comprehend what Rae Jean told her as her features paled. I took over the interrogation from her.
"Who are you?"
"The new Don of the Spanish Mafia,"
I think my expression screams the words I want to say out loud, something that doesn't happen too often.
"It was between Jordan and me. I'm his cousin, but he was doing shitty work. He moved half of the Mafia here to get closer to you and ensure I never get to rule. So Troy worked side by side with me to take him down, but Troy paid the heftier price than me."
Penny snaps from her thoughts and joins the conversation, "You wouldn't happen to know what went down between Shane, Jordan and Joey, would you?"
With a guilty expression, she says, "I made a deal not to say, and I can't break it. But I can offer you this." She says.
I am at the edge of my seat, wondering how this will play out.
"The Mafia wants to be your ally, which is why I came here. I offer a deal. I can help you find Kasie and Valentía. In return, we ask for peace, we help you fight your battles, and you help us with ours."
Peyton doesn't even think about it, "Deal."
"Good now, I can say what is on my mind. Are you single?"
I exchange looks with Peyton and hold back a laugh.
Peyton's cheeks redden while she stutters, 'N-no."
"Such a shame. My cousin had a thing for you." Rae Jean smirks at the two of us.
Why do I feel that she intended that question for both of us?
"On an unrelated note, we can set the ball rolling by getting our hands on Kasie. She poses a bigger threat than Valentía. I have her being followed and tracked. Within the next few weeks, we could get her."
I think I might like this woman.
"Can I come to Spain with you?"
Both women look at me, one with a look that screams 'are you stupid?', while the other is sporting a grin as if she just hit the jackpot.
"Not a chance in hell," Penny says without missing a beat.
I give Rae Jean a tight smile, "We'll be in touch."
She takes that as her cue to stand up from her chair and leave.
"How did you get in here anyway?"
It's a stupid question to ask, but I want to know. This place is heavily guarded.
"Now, that's another thing I can't tell you." She sends a wink my way, opens the door, and walks out of it.
One of the guards closes it while I turn to look at Penny.
"Before you blow a fuse, hear me out." I raise my hands in mock surrender. Her gaze does not waver, making her blue eyes merge with the silver in them to give a perfect rainstorm effect. Her lips are pressed in a thin line, so I take that as my cue to talk.
"I want to talk with my grandmother before Sam puts her out of her misery. I can only do that when she thinks that she is in a safe zone."
Also, I want to find out about Shane and what is the connection between him and Rae Jean.
I can't be the only one thinking it, right?
I know Penny, and I made a deal to be loyal to each other, but I'm trying to take some things off her plate. The people have been sneering in her direction like prisses since they heard she is here to take over. If the purple lines under her eyes are something to go by. Her contacts are back in their place, much to my distaste.
She drops her head onto the table, "Does it ever get easier?"
"I think we both know the answer to that."
"Smartass,"
"Right back at you. Now I believe we have a criminal list to look at."
Don't ask.
And that's how we spend the rest of our day, only taking breaks to eat until Sam walks in with a smile that scares me.
I don't even want to know.
Now that we have put a name to the pretty face of the girl from the wedding that started the gunfight; let's look at the other things at hand.
Is anyone wondering what the deal between Joey, Jordan and Shane was?
What's the relationship between Rae Jean and Shane?
Thoughts? Theories?
Stay tuned.
