Prologue
"Watchtower to Superman, do you copy?"
The Man of Steel was flying across the skies of Metropolis on his usual patrol when he received the call one afternoon. Reaching for the communicator in his ear, Superman answered. "Superman here. Did something happen, Batman?"
"There's been a concerning energy signal in the Nevada desert," came the reply of the Dark Knight. "No League member is close by and the nature of the energy makes you the optimal choice between the ones that can reach it in time."
"What do you mean?"
"It's similar to Boom Tube energy."
That caused Superman to come to a sudden halt. His usually cheerful attitude completely replaced by a serious frown that would usually be seen on Batman instead. "Alright, I'll go check. Send me the coordinates," he said before turning around and dashing through the air.
His speed broke the sound barrier. Superman knew of one person that frequently used the Boom Tubes, especially to reach Earth. The last thing he wanted was to encounter the Evil God of Apokolips again.
Once caused enough destruction and casualties.
It had not been long before the Man of Steel reached the Nevada desert. There was only one old abandoned road in the entire area cutting through the desert. It was obviously not used for a really long time judging by the fact it was very old, broken up, and some parts covered in sands.
The sun shone brightly which was beneficial for Superman. If he WAS dealing with anything related to Apokolips, he will need all the solar energy he can get. Darkseid never did things in any light manner.
Superman caught sight of his target. A very old and small gas station. There was commotion going on but definitely not the kind that the Kryptonian was expecting.
Instead of some other worldly threat like Perademons or a strange phenomenon, what Superman was seeing was something not that off in the desert. A group of coyotes were attacking someone who had their back to the gas station's building.
With his enhanced sight, Superman can see that the person was holding an odd weapon that seemed to be made of pieces of an old engine, an exhaust pipe for a barrel, and a gas dispenser handle for… well, a handle.
Superman didn't believe the weapon to actually be more than a few pieces of junk strapped together to look like a weapon. He was about to go and quickly rescue the person to keep looking for whatever dropped from the Boom Tube when the person squeezed the handle of the weapon.
To the Man of Steel's surprise, the exhaust pipe that worked as a barrel shot an actual fire ball at one of the coyotes and sent it flying to its back where it started flailing to extinguish the fire.
The person pointed the weapon at another coyote that jumped at him and he shot it with a fire ball just like the first. He pointed at a third coyote, but a much smaller fire ball came out that, while didn't knock back the animal, it still caught him on fire and caused it to jump around in panic.
The person looked at the weapon and groaned. "As I suspected. The lack of sufficient fuel barely lasted three shots," the person said as he lowered the weapon and watched the coyotes walk closer.
That's when Superman decided enough was enough and dashed in. Landing between the coyotes and the person, Superman glared with his heat vision at the front of the coyotes, causing them to jump back before they all ran away, deeming the whole thing not worth it.
Turning around, whatever line Superman had died in his throat as he saw the state the person was in.
The person Superman just saved was a young man in his early twenties. He was wearing a torn and burned lab coat over a white roughed up shirt and somewhat torn pants. The young man had black hair and a makeshift eyepatch over his right eye made from what was obviously pieces of his lab coat.
The young man, despite the situation he was in, simply regarded Superman with interest and fascination with his one good eye. "Hmm… Thats interesting. I'm positive those were normal Earth canine lifeforms, yet a flying man exists here? Your costume is too colorful and seems to be themed so it's unlikely you're some secret agent or weapon, and the fact the beam came from your eyes mean it's unlikely you're relying on… power… armor…"
The young man trailed off before he passed out. Before he fell to the ground, Superman appeared next to him in an instant and caught him before he fell on the ground.
Holding the boy in one hand, Superman reached for his communicator with his other. "Superman to Watchtower, do you read me?"
"Did you find the source of the signal?" Came Batman's voice.
The man of Steel looked at the young man in his arm. "I found… something."
Time Skip: Several hours.
"So, what's this big thing that you wanted from us, Bats," the Flash asked as he and the other founding league members gathered in the Watchtower.
The members were made up of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan.).
"Whenever you call for founding members only, it's something serious," Wonder Woman commented.
"Several hours ago we received a signal transmission from the Nevada desert," Batman began.
"This isn't an area 51 joke, right?" Hal joked, despite knowing that the military base actually exists.
"It was Boom Tube energy," that statement caused all League Members par Superman to tense up.
"Oh, please tell me it wasn't-"
"It wasn't Darkseid," Batman's statement caused the League members to relax.
"Then what did you find?" Aquaman asked the Kryptonian.
"I found someone," Superman stated before pressing a button on his side of the table. That caused a picture of the young man he found to appear on a holographic screen on top of the table.
"An hour ago-" Batman began explaining.
Flashback: One Hour.
"How is he?" Superman and Batman, who came down after hearing of what Superman found, asked the doctor in front of them.
As soon as the man of Steel made sure nothing else was in the area, he hurried to the nearest hospital he can find. Batman came in to check on the young man as he was their only possible lead on what the Boom Tube energy was.
"Well, first off, he's definitely human," the doctor began his diagnosis as he looked over the clipboard he was holding. "That's good became no one in this hospital has any degree in alien physiology. Second off, he has a few burns and bruises around his body but they're treatable. The biggest problem is… his right eye. It's like he received a lightning bolt to the face. I don't want go say this but… There's no way that eye is any good anymore."
The Man of Steel sighed solemnly at that. He would have believed it was his fault, but the young man's eye was obviously damaged before he got there.
"Doctor Thompson," a nurse came in before freezing at the sight of the Superheroes.
"Yes, what is it?" The doctor asked.
That seemed to break the nurse out of her shock. "The boy woke up and he asked to see the people who brought him in and I… Suppose those are you two?" She said hesitantly while looking at the two heroes.
"Can we see him?" Superman asked.
The doctor sighed. "Normally, we would ask you to wait for us to do a few tests, but considering this is a special situation and the patient asked for you, sure. You can come with me."
The three of them walked into the room with the young man and found him sitting on his bed, his makeshift eyepatch replaced with bandages and his ruined clothes replaced with a hospital gown with an IV patch dripping into his arm.
Turning to look at them with his one good eye, the young man surprised them with a calm smile. "Ah, there you are. The man in the blue suit," he said while looking at Superman before his gaze turned to Batman. "And another individual that wears a themed costume. Quite interesting."
"I'm glad to see you're alright," Superman said with a smile as he walked closer to the boy.
"Yes, thank you for getting me out of the middle of the desert," the young man said before looking at the window. "This is Earth, correct?"
The question caught Superman off guard. Batman was the one to answer. "You're on Earth. You came here via a Boom Tube. Who are you and why are you here?"
Superman gave his friend a disapproving look. They had confirmed the young man was human, but he couldn't blame his caution when Boom Tubes were involved.
"Boom Tubes?" The young man seemed genuinely confused. "Are you saying this technology was already discovered here?"
"Can you tell us who you are?" Superman asked, far nicer than his partner did.
"Ah, where are my manners? I am Peter Martin. Its a pleasure to meet you," the young man introduced himself with a nod. "Just to be clear, what year is this?"
"2010."
"Hmm… Several years into the past," the young man commented while placing a hand on his chin. "That means that the time axis itself here is either different or slower than what I'm used to."
"Where did you come from?" Batman asked.
"Oh, I come from a different Earth," Peter replied as if he was talking about the weather.
"What?"
"I am a scientist where I come from. I was experimenting with interdimensional travel and trying to see it was possible when…" Peter trailed off and lightly caressed the bandages over his eye. "... my latest experiment went haywire and I ended up in the middle of the desert. I realised that my experiment worked to an extent and attempted to find something, but all I found was a very old and abandoned gas station."
"The Boom Tube energy we picked up was your creation?" Batman asked.
"You keep saying that term, 'Boom Tube', meaning you have a classification for this phenomenon which means someone already discovered this technology here," Peter groaned with a frown. "Disappointing, but not unexpected considering the infinity of the Multiverse."
"So you really don't know where you are?" Superman asked.
"As I said, I am likely in an alternate version of Earth," Peter answered before looking at Superman with a raised eyebrow. "Unless I simply ended in another planet similar to Earth with the same name that has flying citizens?"
"I'm a special case," Superman immediately replied.
"Then yes, I'm positive that I'm on a different version of my Earth. Or maybe my Earth is a different version of yours? Maybe both? The possibilities are endless," Peter mumbled with interest filling his eyes before remembering the doctor was there. "Ah, I'm sorry for neglecting you, doctor. Now, what is my status?"
The doctor, who had been standing at the side and just listening in while staying out of the conversation as it included 'other Earths', broke out of his shock. "Huh, oh, just some burns and a little dehydration. You should be okay after an IV pack but I'd still recommend a few days of rest. Your eye, however…"
"It's ruined, isn't it?" The doctor hesitantly nodded at Peter's observation. "Annoying, but expected and manageable. I'll just have to make a new one."
That caused surprise across the room. "You can regrow eyes?" Superman asked.
Peter looked at him like he grew a second head. "What? No. I mean create a prosthetic. The cranial is a replaceable part of the human body with the right tools."
"I'm sorry, but medical science hasn't been able to create a functioning cranial prosthetic that can take place of normal ones," the doctor said solemnly.
Peter rolled his eye with a sigh. "Which is why I said that I'll make one. Technology like that may be advanced for you, but for me it's rather an easy achievement," the doctor looked at him with doubt. "Oh, right. That's not how normal people talk," Peter sighed. "Forgive me. I've been told that my 'confidence' can come off as arrogance. People tended to call me a 'prodigious genius' a lot where I come from."
Back to present:
"After some research, I found no evidence whatsoever on 'Peter Martin' ever existing anywhere in the world. No facial recognition, and no matches on either finger prints or DNA samples," Batman said, finishing the story to the other League members.
"So… some kind of super genius from another dimension? That's just another Tuesday for us," Green Lantern said, crossing his arms.
"That's not just it," Superman pressed another button and the picture changed from Peter to the weapon he used against the coyotes. "He made this… from junk. Actual junk that hasn't been used in years. In less than an hour. Imagine what he can do if he had access to a lab."
"Or worse, a military base," Batman added with a serious look. "The fact he was actually able to discover technology similar to the Mother Boxes and create a Boom Tube alone is enough to make him a possible threat. We can't let someone like that go without supervision."
"Not to mention that, if he's saying the truth, then he has no where to go," Wonder Woman added. She doubted the local authorities handled interdimensional travelers.
"Hmmm… What if we leave him in the company of someone we can trust while also being able to monitor him," Martian Manhunter suggested.
"Do you have an idea, J'onn?" Flash asked.
"I suggest we place him with the team that was recently created from our partners," the Martian suggested.
"Woah, hold on, are you sure?" Green Lantern raised his hands. "That team was just formed and we just sent your nieve there. Isn't it a bit early to send someone new, especially like this guy, to them?"
"He's right. It's too risky," Batman agreed with Green Lantern.
"Wonder Woman is correct, the authorities are not likely to be able to help him," Martian Manhunter backed up his idea. "Unless one of the League members take him in, he will have to wait somewhere where we can make sure he won't cause harm until we create a citizen identity for him."
"I agree with J'onn," Aquaman spoke up. "The reason we created that team is because we knew those young heroes can take care of themselves and handle such responsibilities."
"It's still early for them," Superman argued.
"Well, the alternative is finding a way to send him back home that doesn't involve going to Apokolips and wrestling a Mother Box from Darkseid and his army," Flash added, causing the members to look around.
Soon enough, Batman groaned in defeated. "I don't like it either. But, Flash is right. We have no way to either send him home and creating an identity for him now would take time. Placing him on the team is our safest bet. Any objections?" None of the League Members spoke up. "Very well. Superman, let's go inform him. Manhunter, inform the Team."
Time Skip: 15 minuets.
Superman and Batman entered the gates of the hospital, causing all eyes to turn towards them and whispers to begin spreading. They stopped as they saw Doctor Thompson running frantically towards them.
"Doctor, what's wrong?" Superman asked.
"He… he… did…" The Doctor breathed heavily.
"Calm down. What happened? Did Peter escape?" Batman asked.
The doctor shook his head as he finally regained his breath. "N-No. He did it!" He cried out in the middle of the hall. "I-I didn't believe it but he actually did it!"
"Did what? What are you talking about?" Superman asked.
The doctor nodded and motioned for them to follow him as he began walking to Peter's room. "Thirty minutes ago, the security camera on the hallway that Peter's room is in went out. We also noticed some tools from the surgery room and janitor closet gone. Security guards checked and it turned out that the Camera was just… taken apart," they reached said hallway and the doctor motioned to an empty spot in the ceiling where wires dangled. "We figures it wasn't smashed since the pieces weren't on the ground or anywhere for that matter. We checked with Peter and found him tinkering with something," the doctor stopped at the door and turned to the Superheroes. "I… I really didn't believe it. But he actually did it. He created it."
The two heroes, even Batman, had their eyes widen when they remembered what Peter was he'll make before they left him to meet with the other members of the League.
Going into the room, they saw Peter on the bed with a satisfied smile on his face, his lap covered with mechanical pieces and wires while he held a screwdriver and surgical scissors… and in front of him was an almost complete prosthetic eye.
(A/N: Hey there.
This is just an idea that was stuck in my head for LITERAL MONTHS.
It was killing me to not share it or at least post one part of it.
Honestly, I really hope you guys like it. I'll hopefully continue it if it receives positive feedback.)
