Chapter 18
Marshall paced back and forth in his living room. His arms were crossed and his face held nothing but worry. A bandage was wrapped around his wrist, covered by his sleeve.
Suddenly, his phone rang. He immediately picked it up from the table and answered it. Hope glittered in his eyes.
"Hello?" Marshall answered
His shoulders relaxed a bit in disappointment "Oh, it's just you guys. No, no, I didn't mean it like that Eve. It's just..I'm worried. Rocky hasn't come home yet and it's almost midnight. Zuma! Don't scream in my ear! Yes, I called his phone Chase, like a million times! I did Skye, earlier and he wasn't there!"
The door opened, and said guy walked in with a sheepish smile on his face. Marshall's eyes widened with surprise.
"I'll call you guys back. He's here." Marshall said quickly, hanging up.
Marshall walked over to Rocky and hugged him tightly "Where the hell have you been?!"
"Marshall, I'm fine. I just took a little walk around town." Rocky said, hugging his adoptive brother back.
Marshall pulled away, his face now held anger and concern "Why didn't text me?! Or call the others?! Do you know how worried sick I was?! I was out there, looking for you for three hours!"
"Marsh, you really shouldn't be put here this late at night." Rocky said with concern.
Marshall narrowed his eyes "Your the one to talk! Where. Were. You."
"I told you, I went to walk around town. My phone died before I could text you and tell you I was coming home late." Rocky said with a roll of his eyes "I'm not a little kid, I'm only a year younger than you."
"That doesn't matter! Rocky, there are dangerous stuff out there that can hurt you! Do you know what I would do if you got hurt?!" Marshall yelled
"You don't care about me. No one does." Rocky said darkly, narrowing his eyes.
"Of course I care about you Rocky! You have friend who care and Zuma loves you so much! I adopted you! We're brothers-"
"Your not my family."
Marshall's eyes widened in shock at the words that came out the intelligent boy's mouth. He was stuck to the floor, unable to move. Rocky glared hard at him before dropping his back pack and going up stairs.
"Rocky..." Marshall whispered
'Time Skip'
The bell rung, meaning that it was time for lunch. The gang all sat at there regular table. But something felt...off. Tension stood as tall as a pine tree, but no one, except two certain brothers, didn't know what.
"Anyone else feel uncomfortable here?" Chase whispered to Skye and Everest.
"Definitely. Something's wrong." Skye whispered back.
"I think it's Rocky and Marshy. Rocky did come home late and you know how Marshy is." Everest said in a low tone, watching her friends and boyfriend eat.
"But what happened? It's no like them to just ignore each other." Skye whispered
"Maybe we should talk to them, have them explain their side of the story." Chase said
The girls nodded and continue eating. Meanwhile, Marshall was looking at his wrist the entire time. It stopped hurting but it stung deeply. His heart was heavier than usual. He sighed and stood up, making his friends, all except Rocky, look up at him.
"I'm going to the bathroom. Be right back." Marshall forced a tired smile and walked away.
Once he was out of the cafeteria, he slowly walked outside. The feeling of dread in his chest became heavier and heavier with each step he took.
"Where are you going?"
Marshall turned around and forced a smile, seeing his favorite cousin behind him "Oh, Lyra. I was just going to get some fresh air."
"Don't take another step until you tell me what's wrong." Lyra demanded
"Lyra, I'm fine. Seriously." Marshall rolled his eyes.
"No, your not." Lyra said, walking up to her cousin and grabbing his wrist.
Unfortunately, she grabbed the wrong wrist "Ow!" Marshall cried in pain and yanked his arm away.
Lyra widened her eyes and looked at her cousins wrist. It was bandaged neatly, a drop of rich red liquid only appear on the side.
"Oh my god. Marsh, tell me you didn't..." Lyra gasped and narrowed her eyes at her cousin.
"I didn't-"
"Yes you did! What did I tell you?! If you ever cut again then I wouldn't talk to you anymore! You promised Chase you wouldn't!" Lyra screamed
"I didn't! I swear!" Marshall yelled desperately
Lyra turned her heal and walked away, ignoring Marshall's calls. Marshall sighed, tears in his eyes as he flash backed to what really happened.
'Flashback'
Marshall was about to slice his skin with the razor when he paused. Why was he doing this? He made a promise, even if the other half of the promise was broken.
"No...I can't. I don't want to upset them." Marshall whispered.
Marshall dropped the razor in the mud. He raised his arm to put his back pack on when he felt a sharp pain explode from his wrist. He pulled it back with a pain cry, cradling it.
'Flashback ended'
"Look what you've done Marshall. Now two people are mad at you. And they're your own fucking family." Marshall hissed at himself
Marshall sadly looked over his shoulder and sighed "I can't stay here."
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number, a number he'd thought he would never call. He put up against his ear and waited for it to be answered.
"Hey, dad? Yeah, it's Marshall. Can I come to the fire station early and start my training for the contest?"
'Time Skip'
"So, he's not anywhere?" Everest asked
The gang were all at the park, same place as yesterday. They were all waiting for the pale teen who mysteriously disappeared at school.
"No. I called and texted and called again! It's not like Marshall to not answer his phone." Chase said, pacing back and forth.
Lyra and Rocky were really the only two that were sitting down. Rocky leaned against Zuma's back. He began to feel guilty of what he said to Marshall last night. Not only that but worried, scared that Marshall had disappeared.
"Hey, what's this on the branch." Rubble asked, looking at the tree next to him.
The gang came to Rubble's side. On one particular branch, there was a streak of dark liquid.
"Is that...blood?" Skye asked
Lyra gasped "Oh no..."
"What?" Everyone asked, turning to the girl.
"It's Marshall's. He must've cut himself on that branch yesterday. And I yelled at him for it..." Lyra whispered
Rocky stood "Now we really have to find him."
"Wait, do you hear that?" Chase asked, silencing everyone.
"Oh yeah, I heaw it too!" exclaimed Zuma
Everyone turned to the entrance of the park and saw a red hooded figure leaning against the gate. He had his headphones and mumbling, singing softly. Some stopped by and watched him in amazement.
"That's Marshall." Chase said
"Should we go to him?" Skye asked, cross in her arms and looking up at Chase curiously.
"Uh, I think Evewest beat ya to it dude." Zuma said, pointing off to a certain mountain girl.
"Marshall!" Everest yelled.
Marshall winced at the sound of his girlfriend's voice and took out his headphones "Hey Eve, how's it going?"
"Where were you? You just disappeared after lunch." Everest said, narrowing her eyes.
"Sorry, my dad called me and told me I had to train for the annual firefighter contest in February." Marshall explained, forcing a gently smile.
Everest blinked "Well ok. Do you wanna get back to the others? We can all do our homework together."
"Sure. But let's do it at my house. It's gonna rain by the time we're done." Marshall suggested
Everest nodded and walked closer to Marshall, cupping his cheek "Hey. I was worried, are you sure your ok?"
For the first time all day, Marshall gave a real warm smile "I'm alright Eve, really. You not the others have to worry about me."
"Ok. See you at your house." Everest whispered
Marshall nodded and leaned in, pressing his lips on his girlfriend's. Everest kissed back, using both hands to cup his face. They pulled away, smiling at each other. Marshall put his head phones back in and walked off while Everest rejoined her friends.
"Have a nice kiss?" Lyra asked with a small smirk.
Everest rolled her eyes, unamused "Yes actually. He said he'll meet us at his house to do homework."
"Did he tells you where he was?" Rocky asked hopefully
"Yeah. His dad got him out early to practice for a contest next year." Everest replied
"But why didn't he tell us? He just left quickly." Chase asked, still feeling uneasy.
"Let it go Chase. Maybe his dad made it sound urgent." Skye reassured
"Well we don't wanna be late. And I'm starting to get hungry." Rubble said, standing
Lyra and Rocky glanced at each other, they knew what they had to do. To make things right.
'Time Skip'
A large, exhausted sigh came from around the room. Pencils and pens were dropped as the teens slumped back in their seats.
"I'm exhausted. Anyone want a drink? I still have some of Skye's left over cookies. " Marshall suggest, getting up from the couch and to his kitchen.
"Uh, not really. I guess water for me." Chase said
"Same, my mouth feels so dry I think if I touch it it'll crack." Skye said, learning on Chase's shoulder with her eyes closed.
"I don't know about you dudes, but I am ready to chill." Zuma said, wrapping a shoulder around Rocky.
"Movie?" Everest suggested
Everyone cheered, either jumping on the couch or sitting in front of it. Lyra sneaked away from the group and into the kitchen where she saw her cousin preparing snacks. She walked over to him slowly, fiddling with her thumbs.
"M-Marsh?" Lyra whispered
Marshall popped his head out the fridgerator and turned to her "Oh, hey. Need something?"
"No, but, I want to talk to you." Lyra said, looking down at her shirt.
"Alright, shoot." Marshall said, leaning his elbows on the counter.
"Look, I'm sorry. For yelling at you earlier and making you feel so much worse than you already do." Lyra said, not meeting the warm blue eyes of comfort "I'm really sorry. It's just...you scared me. A lot. The last time you did it...I was afraid you were going to end up in the hospital this time and-and um...I don't want that to happen."
Lyra felt tears form, and tried to blink them away. Marshall came to her side with a small, but soft, smile.
"Hey, it's ok Ly. You did it out of worry." Marshall said with passion.
"But with everything going on with your parents, Chase still not finding out, and the tension between you and Rocky, I just added on to the stress your dealing with." Lyra unexpectedly sobbed, her shimmery violet eyes connecting with bright, baby blue eyes.
Marshall's smile widened, and the heaviness in his chest lifted just a bit. He pulled Lyra close, rubbing her back gently.
"Shh, it's ok bug. You did it out of worry and not hate. And I can never be upset with you for that. And, your still my favorite cousin ever." Marshall chuckled
Lyra giggled, pressing her cheek against Marshall's shoulder "So, do you forgive me?"
"Of course I do bug. Why wouldn't I?" Marshall said, smiling as he pulled away.
"Don't worry about Rocky or Chase. I'll smack some sense into those two for you." Lyra said with determination.
"No, it's alright. They have to learn from their mistakes to grow." Marshall said quietly.
Lyra smiled and hopped to the tray "Well, I'll bring the refreshments to the others. I'm sure their waiting."
"You do that. I'll be in there just a sec, I'm getting the chips." Marshall smiled widely.
Lyra nodded and took the tray to the living room. She walked passed Rocky, who was leaning on the wall the whole time. Marshall looked at him in shock while walking behind the counter.
"Rocky? Do you need something?" Marshall asked
"We need to talk." Rocky said
