Chapter 45

"Just pull it out." Asia raised her voice as loudly as she could in the all-white room.

Ethan gritted his teeth as he held the two, thin clear cords. "I can't just pull it out." He glared over at Asia. Beads of sweat slid down the sides of his face. "He has a needle in his brain stem and another in his spine." He focused back on the cords trying to concentrate in the dark room. "One wrong move and he could be paralyzed."

"How do you know.... you're a wannabe lawyer."

"I'm going to ignore that." He glanced up at her. "Cause I know you're worried." He pulled the needle out a centimeter and Denver's legs began the stir. He slid the needles out a little further and his eyes stopped lolling wildly behind his eyelids. "It's almost all the way out."

Asia knelt by the low twin sized bed that seemed to float in the air, "I think he's waking up." She held his hand in hers as she watched Denver's frantic breaths start to even out.

"Almost.... got it." Ethan held his breath as he slid the thick, metal needles out of Denver's flesh. Ethan dropped the needles, stained at the points with Denver's blood to the immaculately clean white floor.

Denver gasped loudly, quickly rolling his eyes open.

The radiance of his glowing eyes rivaled her shine of Asia's smile. "Are you okay?" She gripped his hand a little tighter.

"You're real." He breathed out holding onto her hand. "I'm Denver."

"Yes. You are." She firmly nodded. "Can you get up?"

He shook his head. Denver grimaced and groaned as he sat up. The gun wound on his chest was hidden by clean white gauze taped down to his skin.

Ethan closed the door he was peeking out of and turned back to them, "You gotta get him out of here."

"What do you mean, you?" Asia draped Denver's arm around her neck. "We're getting him out of here."

Ethan shook his head. "She's here."

Asia blinked with confusion and then it clicked. "How do you know?"

"I know her scent." Ethan took a small step away from the door. "And I'm not leaving this place without her."

"I wouldn't ask you too." Asia rested her hand around Denver's waist.

Denver grunted before opening his mouth, "We're not leaving you either." He clenched his teeth back together. "Are we?" He glanced over at Asia. She gave him silence. "Are we?" He repeated this time with a little desperation.

"We aren't." She shuffled toward Ethan, dragging Denver along with her. "Cause you're going to take Denver and get him out. While I go get Leslee."

"You don't know where she is." Ethan pulled the gun out of the holster. "I do." He tightened the silencer onto the gun's barrel.

"And you'll tell me where to find her." She pulled Denver's arm from around her neck. Ethan shook his head at her words. "Look! We don't have time to argue! There's no way I can pack Den do three flights. You can bare his weight more than I can."

"I'm the one that supposed to save her." Ethan gripped the gun's handle. "She's my girlfriend."

"And she's my friend." Asia seethed out. "My last, living girl friend." Ethan blinked painfully at the hurt in her tone. "Now, take our brother. Find Ollie and Eric, get out of this place and wait for me."

Ethan took a still half-sedated Denver away from Asia. "It's not going to be that easy." He put Denver's arm around his neck, the movement caused the boy to open his eyes once more. "Leslee's on the top floor and...." He stopped but held her gaze. "Someone else is with her. Someone we know."

"Someone like who?" Asia slipped the knuckle-rung handled blade back onto her hands one at a time.

"Someone...in your family."

"My dad or my mom."

"I can't tell." He shrugged. "Just...don't hesitate."

"I won't." Asia smiled then wrapped her arms around his neck and squeezed tightly. He placed his free arm around her. "I'm right behind you." She squeezed him once more and then pulled away. She called for Shaka, who was sitting quietly in the corner and slowly opened the door. The two, OXRO and wolf disappear in the dark.

"Where's Asia?" Denver asked coming to as he and Ethan stood in the dark hallway.

"Saving the woman I love," Ethan muttered quietly as moved them briskly down the hallway. "Now, Den." Ethan's fast walk turned into a hobbled run. "You have to try your best to wake up...because the beast is here."

Denver shook his head trying to pull his eyes open but the concocting that put you into Lucid proved to be too strong. "What Beast?"

Ethan pushed up the door that led to the stairwell, "The one that I fed since I was thirteen." The door slammed closed as he rushed down the stair, Denver's feet slipping over them.
