Chapter 42
Eric's blood was boiling. A fire burned in his veins. He couldn't stand still. He rocked from foot to foot in the dark hallway. His heart was beating as fast as a pygmy shrew. He balled his twitching hands into a fist. Rolling his shoulders, his breath morphed into a low growl that mimicked Shaka's.
"Eric, are you okay?" Ethan whispered to the boy that stared at the wall away locked in another dimension. "Asia, something's wrong with him," Ethan told.
Asia stopped peeking around the corner, leering at the empty hallway. She stood in front of him, slipped her blade back in its holster and took hold of his face. His skin seared her fingertips. His emblazoned eyes looked right through her.
"Eric." She whispered with Ethan and Oliver gawking over her shoulder but he didn't move. "Eric." She hissed a little louder. She caught Shaka in her peripheral, moving into the hallway slowly, and his growls guttural. "Eric." She snarled between clenched teeth, her voice vibrating in her throat.
Eric blinked situating his eyes on Asia. His breathing still labored. "I can't..." He whined. "I can't stand in this hallway." He twisted his hands around Asia's wrist. "You were right. They took too much from us." She stripped Asia's hands away from his face. "They'll pay for this it. I'll make them pay...for it." He stepped around her.
"Those freaks are down there." Oliver sneered angrily. He stopped, listening to the noise in the distance, the faint rumble of the veneer floor. "They're up here." Oliver pulled his machete out the holster. "We came here to find Denver. Let's find Denver."
"We don't know where we are." Eric took steps backward, inching closer to Shaka, whose low growls could wake any sleeping soul. "How the hell are we going to find him?"
Oliver was speechless.
"I can find 'em." Ethan disclosed with his crossbow now firmly in his hands. "I can smell him. It's faint but I smell the forest." He inhaled a little deeper. "I think...two floors up."
"See." Oliver nudged Eric's shoulder. "Ethan will take up to Denver. Let's go." He pleaded but it didn't stop Eric's backward migration to the hallway.
Eric shook his head still traversing, "I can't Ollie Black." He looked to Asia. "I can't."
"I know." Asia agreed. "You're an Omega. You kill. Hunt. You don't run." She pulled Oliver back to her and toward the stairwell. "So, do what you're created to do. Kill. Kill them all."
"I will." Eric pulled two handguns from the waistband of his pants. He cocked the guns and stepped into the hallway. At the end of the elongated hallway, that seemed to be half a mile stood a creature with a globular head, neck like a tree trunk, long torso, short limbs and eyes as orange as a highlighter.
Eric clicked his tongue catching the wolf's attention, "Shaka, go. I got this." He winked. The wolf ran to the stairwell as Eric aimed. The creature dropped to all fours tearing down the hallway quaking the floor. A round blasted in two seconds and like a baseball player en route to home base, the inhuman beast slide to his feet.
Eric's top lip curled up as he looked at the glitch with disgust, "Bear. They tried bear." He laughed reloading his gun. "Who's next?"
