Chapter Twenty Three

"What's happened? Frost told me Stone fell in the gorge!" Cloud's panicked voice shook Owlflight from his thoughts.

He looked up to see Cloud, Robin, Winter, Firepaw, and Frost all staring over the edge of the gorge. "You're too late!" He cried. "He's gone. Stone's gone!"

"He can't be!" Frost wailed, kneading the ground with her tiny paws. Cloud licked at her kit's head in an attempt to calm her.

"We'll sit vigil for him tonight." Winter said, his voice oddly emotionless. "We should head back to camp-"

"No. We'll stay here!" Cloud interrupted. "This is where he died. We will sleep here today.. Away from the gorge." She added.

"Okay." Winter muttered. Owlflight scrambled up the steep sides of the gorge, laying down to rest beside Robin. As usual, he was silent, though his troubled expression gave away his grief.

Firepaw curled up beside Cloud, who was still licking endlessly at Frost's fur. Winter laid at her other side.

"Do you think he's with StarClan?" He heard Firepaw asking quietly.

"There's no such thing as StarClan." Winter replied. "It's a tale for kits."

"That's not true!" Cloud hissed, settling down for sleep. "StarClan is very real, and Stone walks in it tonight. He believed in them, so they believed in him. Have you met Rainpaw?"

"Who?"

"Rainpaw. He's your uncle, you mouse-brain. He's training to become a moon cat, which is StarClan's messenger. His mentor is named Thorncloud. They both have a connection with StarClan, and if you cannot believe in it after you meet them, you must be foxhearted." Cloud explained.

Winter snorted. "Goodnight, Cloud."

"Goodnight, Winter.."

The next morning felt a lot like a morning after a cat had died. It was cold and rainy, washing away the last of Stone's scent from the forests. It felt different without him; he'd always been a part of their group.

Owlflight wondered if Stone was with Firepelt. She hadn't been around to see her kits grow into the cats they had become, with mates and kits and all. She would meet Frost soon, if Rainpaw was right about her fate.

"Frost is missing!" Cloud's sudden yelp made Owlflight jump. He hadn't noticed that Frost had disappeared, although he had been the first cat awake.

"Where's Winter?" Came Robin's sleepy voice, and Owlflight guessed that he'd just woken up.

Cloud frantically looked around, sniffing the air in an attempt to catch either of the missing cat's scent. The pouring rain made it almost impossible to scent anything, but Owlflight thought he could vaguely smell Winter's scent trail heading in the direction of clan land. What would he be doing there?

"This way! I think I scent him." Owlflight said. Cloud, Firepaw, and Robin followed him along the barely noticeable scent trail. He hoped that he was bringing them the right way.

Suddenly, the forest dipped to reveal a sunk in part of the earth. In the small hole, lay a broken body, while blood was everywhere; the trees, the grass, the bushes, everywhere.

Owlflight felt like he was going to be sick. The body was barely recognisable, though he could guess from the small size who it was. He thought he caught a glimpse of white fur as he got closer, his heart thudding.

They don't have any future. It almost felt like Rainpaw's voice was right beside him. They have no hope.

Cloud let out a loud, dragged out wail full of all of the grief in the world. "Frost! Who did this? Who killed my baby?" She panted. "I'll kill him! I will! I'll kill the little-"

"Cloud? Is that you?" All heads turned towards a voice. Owlflight noticed a shape huddled in the shadows. A moment later, Winter appeared, his white pelt soaked red. He limped over to where Cloud huddled over Frost's body, trembling.

"Winter? You... You did this! You killed her!" Cloud hissed at him. "You're covered in her blood!"

Winter's eyes were wide. "You think I killed my own kit?" He spat. "It's not Frost's blood, it's my own!"

Cloud stood up tall, a threatening look on her face. "What happened?" She said, disbelief clear in her voice.

"B-Bloodshed. I woke up and realised that she was missing.. Then found her in this hole. Bloodshed was with her.. Sh-She was so scared.. Then some cats appeared, the cats that I used to consider friends and they... They attacked us! Look at me, I'm bleeding. I didn't do this.." Winter pointed to some blood seeping from a cut on his flank with his tail. "They left after a while, but not without killing Frost. I know what this was, Cloud. It was revenge.. Because I killed my own brother."
