Part One
Okay, I figured out what I want to do with this story. Basically I'm going to redo it. What that means is I'm going to edit my chapters, like complete overhaul of all of them and make the writing something I can be proud of. Then, I'm going to be rereleasing the chapters as I'm done editing them. So hopefully, I'll be releasing more complex, more eloquent and more interesting chapters. I hope to make the storyline stronger and over all better. I hope this is something that can excite you guys without stressing me out too much. In a way, it should be like a whole new story. You can ask me any questions in my inbox or in the comments, thanks!
"Who is this?" I heard a strong, male voice from up above,
"This is Mei-Ling Zhou, a climatologist who was assigned to Overwatch's monitoring station at Watchpoint: Antarctica." A British voice said quickly,
"Why isn't she there now?" The original voice asked,
"Well, on the eve of the first Omnic Crisis a polar storm cut it off from the outside world, leaving the facility damaged and her and the others stranded. The scientists saw no rescue in the near future so they entered cryostasis in a last-ditch effort to survive until a rescue attempt could be made." The British voice said again, I tugged at my parka nervously. It felt strange hearing someone else know everything about me, especially because I couldn't see them,
"Rescue never came–rather, it came several years too late. The rest of her team didn't make it through cryostasis. She was the only survivor." the same voice finished. There was a long pause before anyone said anything,
"Like lost puppy." this voice sounded Russian, sharp and loud,
"Yes, Zarya. She certainly is like a... lost puppy." The british woman spoke again,
Well I'm not helpless. I thought to myself,
"Winston actually led the search and rescue party, when he recalled overwatch a few months back he saw that Mei appeared on the map... up until that point he thought she was dead." The British woman sounded sad, I also felt a pang in my heart... I also thought I was dead until I saw Winston that fateful morning.
"Well let's see what she can do." the original, male voice said,
I couldn't see them through the dark window hovering over the room in which I had been brought to. I imagine it's a one-way mirror, designed for them to see out but not for me to see in. The room I was in was all white with a few box shaped compartments on the walls. I imagine that's where some kind of training bots would come from. I was in the new Overwatch headquarters, after I had been rescued I was told that Overwatch had disbanded shortly after I entered stasis. But I also heard that Winston was recalling the entire Overwatch team plus some new alliances because of a group called Talon... apparently they were bad news.
They also told me that my co-workers–my friends were dead. My entire world had been flipped upside down in the few hours it took Winston to explain everything. But now I had a purpose again, Winston said that I had to go through a sort of "tryout" period. Which is exactly what I was doing in this room, I was trying out.
One question remained still, what created the polar storm that killed my friends? It was not natural, I knew that for sure.
The first wave of bots was easy, I took them down quickly with my endothermic blaster. I felt rather proud of myself, three years later and I can still pull my weight in battle. The second wave hit and this time they were larger, and quick. I, on the other hand, was not quick. I put up an ice wall in order to slow the income of new bots. I took on the ones circling me and watched them crash to the ground. The new bots broke through the ice wall and attacked. These seemed to have some kind of immunity to freeze, I decided to switch to combat. I grabbed ahold of one and cracked its battery pack, I then used this one to throw at two others. Two birds with one stone, great. The third wave hit and it was much larger this time. Two large bots, these didn't fly either. They came in fast and I panicked. Snowball, my weather altering robot and my best friend, unattached from my pack and began circling the room. A blizzard came forth and froze the two bots where they stood. I sighed, prematurely. I opened my eyes and saw they had both broke free of the ice and were coming in fast. I flinched and heard the distinct crackling noise of ice freezing over my body. I was in cryo-freeze. It's my only defence when I'm in a bind.
A few seconds later I came barreling out of the thick block of ice. I picked up my endothermic blaster ready to fight again, but there was no target. The room had been cleared and I was seemingly alone.
"Congratulations comrade!" the sharp Russian voice was behind me now, I whipped around and saw a very, very large woman with flaming pink hair giving me an unnaturally large smile.
"Wh-What?" I stuttered and felt Snowball click back into my pack.
"Mei, it's good to see you again." Winston walked up behind the large Russian and held his hairy arms out. Without missing a beat, I embraced the gorilla.
"Winston!" this was the first familiar face I had seen since arriving at headquarters.
"What Zarya was trying to say is, we would be honored to have you join us, Mei." Winston pulled back and spoke to my face. I clapped my hands together and could hardly contain my joy.
"Oh, Winston, It's been so long since I've had a crew or–anyone! Oh, I'm just so happy! Thank you, I promise I won't let you down." Snowball whirled around my head and made a gleeful sound,
"That's right Snowball! We finally have a home!"
"Like lost puppy..." Zarya muttered from behind me,
"What was that?" The woman stood tall and proud with her hands on her hips.
"...Nothing." She brushed a strand of pink hair from her eyes and gave me a softer smile than before, "I am Aleksandra Zaryanova of Russia. Is a pleasure to meet you."
Winston held up a finger,
"We recruited her from the Russian military... it appears that both Russia and Overwatch have a similar enemy."
"I'm Mei-Ling Zhou, but you can just call me Mei." I smiled and shook her extended hand, her grip was dangerously strong yet her hands were soft. Still, I couldn't help but he frightened of the large woman,
"Come, Mei, there's a few people I want you to meet." Winston motioned for me to follow out of the training room.
_____
Winston and Zarya lead me into a large common room with tall ceilings covered in glass. The room was filled with all kinds of people, old, young, boys, girls, tall, short. Truly a diverse group. They were all sitting at one of the chairs on a long, oval table. It appeared we were getting ready for a meeting of some kind.
"Bear with me, there is a lot of us. I will attempt to name them all." I nodded and smiled eagerly. I wanted to meet all of them and be friends with everyone.
"You know Zarya already, she is one of our tanks, specializes in a special particle gun. In the corner, that's Genji and Zenyatta. You hopefully remember Genji, he was working with Overwatch during the last Omnic crisis, Zenyatta is a friend of his. Jesse Mccree is over there,"
He pointed to one end of the long table, I remembered Jesse very clearly, he was Gabriel Reyes' pupil. Jesse was always a very happy, guy, cracking jokes constantly. But this jesse looked very different, he looked sad. Maybe that was due to what Winston told me, apparently before Overwatch was forced to disband, Gabriel Reyes and Commander Jack Morrison died in an explosion... I considered Jack to be my friend. I already missed him.
I felt a figure brush beside me in the doorway, I looked up to see a familiar face smiling down at me,
"Angela!" I grinned,
"Hello, Mei, it has been far too long my friend." She hugged me tightly before taking a seat at one of the chairs.
"You hopefully remember Lena, she's very excited to have you back Mei, I am too." He smiled, I was very happy to be among friends again.
"I managed to find Torbjörn again too, I had lost contact with him a long time ago but when I recalled everyone... he showed up as fast as he could." I remembered Torbjörn, he was always in the garage with Reinhardt, they were constantly building new things.
"I also lost contact with Reinhardt Wilhelm, but he showed up with Torbjörn after the recall."
I saw the two sitting beside each other, Reinhardt wasn't in his armor of course, he was wearing a t-shirt and loose fitting cargo pants. He had gotten much older since I last saw him. Everyone had.
"Lastly we have Fareeha..." he trailed off as I looked over at the silent girl, pulling on her hair braids as she chewed gum,
"Fareeha... I know that name." It took me a moment to register who it was, "That's Ana's daughter!" I smiled up to him, but I saw he wasn't smiling.
"Yes... she is."
"What happened Winston?" I murmured,
"Ana... ana also did not make it through the omnic crisis..." he said barely above a whisper.
"Oh." My face dropped, I was close with Ana.
I had only worked with Overwatch a few times through the course of the Omnic crisis, but every time I did Ana was always close by me.
"I'm so sorry." I dropped my head, "But I'm so glad to be here, we're almost all back together again."
"We're lucky to have you, Mei." He replied while pushing up his glasses.
"How's it going love?" Before I knew she moved, the one he called Tracer had her arm around me. I jumped and let out a squeal, surprised.
"I heard you made it in." She spoke almost too fast to understand,
"We all look a little scary but I promise," she blinked over to Zarya and leaned against her, "We're not all bad."
"Thank yo-" I began,
"Have you met everyone? Can I show you around? Have you seen the entire HQ yet?" I became overwhelmed with questions and wasn't sure which one to answer first,
"Slow down Tracer." The familiar strong, male voice appeared behind Tracer and Zarya, "You might just scare her away."
"Sorry, Sir." Tracer looked down at her feet and leaned off Zarya who seemed very happy to have Tracer stop talking.
"Hello, Mei." A tall man with gray hair and a face mask spoke, he had deep, rigid scars poking up on top of the mask, "I am Soldier 76, Winston and I run this operation. We're very happy to have you on board." I stared at the man, his voice was vaguely familiar but the mask hid him in a way that I knew I hadn't seen him before,
"It's a pleasure," I smiled, but got to reaction from the mask, obviously.
We all sat down I sat besides Angela because I felt safer beside her than anyone else, she had such a kindness about her. Winston and 76 stood at the front of the table while almost everyone listened intently, Jesse Mccree didn't seem to pay any attention at all. Winston informed us on the patterns of Talon, all the places they had been spotted, all the crimes they have commuted.
He told us their were only four known members of Talon that they could confirm, he showed us pictures on a hologram projector to get the full affect.
"This is reaper," a black, ghostly, masked figure appeared on the screen, two giant hand guns beside him, "Identity is unknown, but what he do know is he had been a part of Talon since the beginning." Winston finished, 76 jumped in,
"This assassin is highly dangerous, he feeds off of the lives he takes. He will kill each and everyone one of you should you give him the opportunity to." Chills ran up my spine.
"Widowmaker," Winston jumped back in with a new image, "Some of you might recognize her. Years before Overwatch disbanded, Amelie Lacroix was kidnapped from a mission and we never saw her again... until now." I didn't recognize her, but others obviously did.
76 jumped in again,
"Our sources tell us that she has been brainwashed by Talon and that absolutely no traces of Amelie Lacroix remain in her mind. She will not recognize you, and she will shoot you between your eyes before you even know you're in the same room as her."
Winston continued with a new image,
"Akande Ogundimu, better known as Doomfist. A few months ago Genji, Lena and myself were able to lock him up in a high security prison. We have caught word that he has recently escaped." I heard Genji audibly sigh, "Doomfist comes from one of the wealthiest families in the world, they own a cybernetics company. Doomfist's fist can and will kill you in one punch."
76 finished,
"Lastly we have a young girl named Sombra. I know she doesn't look like much," he motioned to the image, "But I have a lot of experience with her. The last few years I have spent my days in Mexico chasing after a gang called Los Muertos. Sombra spent the beginning of her life as a hacker for the Los Muertos gang, over time she became the best and most dangerous hacker in the world. Despite my best efforts I have never been able to catch her, one moment she will be standing ten feet away from you and the next she'll be behind you. She recently left the Los Muertos gang and is now working with Talon."
I exhaled, there was only four of them but they all sounded more terrifying than I initially thought. And this was only the beginning, who knows who else was behind Talon.
Winston and 76 finished the meeting, explaining more who we were dealing with and what to expect. They were still trying to track Talons movements to find their next heist, apparently they were close to figuring out where they were.
At the end of the meeting people began leaving the room, Winston fumbled over to me and smiled despite the heavy conversation,
"Zarya! Why don't you show Mei to her quarters." The pink haired woman stood up straighter and walked towards me,
"Yes Sir." Zarya nodded at the two men left standing in the meeting room, "This way."
_____
"I already have brought your bags to your room." Zarya spoke while I trailed behind, I found myself struggling to keep up behind her long legs.
"Oh, thank you." I huffed out while practically running behind her. She grunted out a noise probably met as a you're welcome.
"Could you slow down, maybe? I don't want to get lost and you're–you're very tall." She turned around and smiled, slowing down significantly.
"Perhaps you are just small, Mei-Ling."
"Well, that too." I huffed, I walked beside her now and had the chance to observe her. She was very muscular, her arms seemed as large as my head. She also had a tattoo on her arm, 512. Besides being very large, she was also very beautiful. She had soft features and a very pretty face.
"Zarya, what does 512 mean?" I inquired,
"That is my weightlifting record." She said confidently,
"512 pounds?" I asked, amazed,
"No, I am Russian." She scoffed and smiled down at me, "512 Kilograms."
"What? That's the size of a car!" I shook my head in disbelief,
"I am strongest woman in the world," she flexed her arm and I felt an overwhelming desire to feel her bicep, but I resisted knowing we had only just met. She seemed very pleased with herself though,
"Others will tell you I am not strongest but third strongest woman. Do not listen to them, they lie." She gave me a smirk and winked. I couldn't help but laugh, she was very funny. My original thought of her being scary seemed very wrong now, she was actually really cool.
"This is your room." She stopped at a white, metal door. She unlocked the door and dropped a key in my hands,
"Salutations." She waved over her shoulder and started to leave very abruptly.
"Hey! Wait," I spoke before thinking, I do this too often,
"Yes?" She turned and put a hand on her large hip.
"I... Um" I didn't know what to say but I didn't want her to leave yet. She raised an eyebrow and leaned forwards slightly,
"I don't know how to get back." That wasn't a lie, at least. I hadn't payed attention to where we were going at all. There were no windows in this building and all the walls were white... everything looked the same at this point.
"Aha! I forgot something," Zarya spoke loudly and walked back to me while reaching into her pocket.
"This is a tracker. It is your map, your communication device, and of course a way for us to find you." She hands me the handheld device and smiles again, I couldn't help but allow my cheeks to get red. She paused as I took the device and put it in a pocket on my parka.
She stared at me for a moment, she looked like she was trying to process something.
"I shall stay with you while you unpack, Mei." She cocked her head to one side, "Someone needs to show you the ropes on your first day."
