2.3 - Stay safe, Ms. Jeon

All thanks to the kindest soul Hoseok, I am safely back at my house with tons of blankets sprawled over me— Jungkook's doing.

Nothing happened when me and Hoseok walked through the front door— me in my worsest condition ever. Jungkook was still awake and was sitting ideally on the sofa in the living room with his phone glued in his hand and the second his eyes met mine and the way he inspected my corpse-like face— he appalled.

His only aim was to grab his little sister in his arms and give me as much comfort that can help me to get back to my normal state of mind which was the last thing possible.

Jungkook helped me with cleaning the dirt off my body and before tucking me in the bed— he helped me taking the medicines as well as supplements and soon he himself leaned on the other side and kept on staring at me the whole time. By the hour he was asleep, my eyes were still stuck up at the ceiling— trying to think of a solid reason for my previous unhealthy condition.

I was startled. Why not?

Scared too.

It was not a normal incident that after seeing him, a kind of panic attack striked me like a truck. No matter how hard I try to sleep, his brown eyes still moved in my head which was the cause of me being awake the whole night.

"What in the world were you both doing in the middle of the woods at freaking 12 at night!?"

I close my eyes as a reflex, Hoseok flinches away after hearing my brother's nerve-chilling scream.

"Have you lost your mind, Jade? Give me the most specific and logical reason or I will-"

He stops between his sentence after witnessing the lone tear cascading down my cheek without my permission. My brother scoffs and walks away, being all angry and out of his wits— not like he shouldn't be, he has all the rights to scream and scold me but I just don't want him to stay mad at me.

He is the last person I want to cut my ties off.

"I am sorry, Jadey, I am so sorry."

Hoseok helplessly asks for forgiveness after my brother exits the living room, leaving me and my bestfriend behind.

"It is not your fault. It is me who should be asking for forgiveness. If only I didn't behave like that-"

"No way, it was me who forced you and didn't protect you, I am sorry Jade."

Our reasons and sorrys never ends and at last we both went inside my brother's room and asked for his forgiveness. I have been worrying my brother too much, too much that he always scream at me for my wrong deed yet when he does, I tear up.

The ringtone of Jungkook's phone starts playing as he raises his finger to stop us from saying anything further.

"Okay, yes I am coming."

He hangs up the call and gives us a straight face.

"Duty calls, and you both need to give a proper reason tomorrow."

The coconut head (I know I shouldn't address my elder brother this way) hastily grabs his jacket from his wardrobe and moves towards the front door.

And even before he could exclaim the next few words, I beat him to it.

"Just heat the food in the oven if I get late!"

"This brat.." Big brother's voice reaches my ears as with a loud thud, the door closes— my brother now out of my comfort zone.

"So.."

"So?" I ask.

"I need to go too," Hoseok starts walking towards the couch and gathers his belongings. "You mean, now?"

"Yeah."

"Okay wait, I will get my-"

"No," He grabs the back of my shirt as I am pulled back in my previous position. "No work for you today."

"I am not sick-sick now. Hobi, I will die staying here alone."

"Yeah sure-"

"Pretty please?" I never, like never try to act cute like this, but Hoseok always makes me do it in situations where I am sensitive the most which actually brings the normal me back.

"Okay, if your brother asks then you are responsible for a pretty pleasing answer."

"Done."

There comes several situations in our way to the office where I get to give my views on basic manners of life, but once we arrive at the main hall, I try to open the door with my back but instead the door opens in my direction, knocking me off my feet.

"What the hell dude! Wh-" I spring out of the way but immediately halt in my words when I realise the identity of the person and instantly regret on opening my mouth.

Standing there is our chief, with his hands pressed against his chest, sighing angrily.

"Late by 15 minutes? Reason shouldn't include falling from the building or a horse, Jade."

Chief glares at the two innocent detectives that are respectfully looking down at their shoes that are much prettier than the person that is standing in front of us.

"Ah, chief actually-"

"We were caught up in an investigation?" Hoseok replies in a questioning form but I know his motive was to stop me from saying anything further that indeed includes the 'falling from a building or a horse' part.

"But you know of the rules our office has, be attentive from next time."

He motions us to enter the office as everyone inside bows their head— an artificial and displeasing greeting.

They all as well as me and Hoseok knows, whenever the chief arrives— he brings trouble along for everyone.

Clicking his fingers, the secretary comes by his side with multiple files in his hand.

"Stand in a line, please. We have got our yearly investigations today."

Everyone whines inside their heads that is all clear through their faces except to the chief. He is either ignoring it or is actually that dense.

Slowly and individually, he hands everyone a thick-covered file which weighs shit-ton loads of papers inside but mine looks rather extra thick like extra cheese toppings on a pizza— an actual contrast of the situations.

"Starting today till ending in tomorrow's evening, your time starts now."

The detectives practically crashes on their seats with the files as the sounds of paper surrounds the room. I am the only one who is witnessing the scene with the chief who can't help but smugly smile at the working individuals.

"Do you need some special announcement, Ms. Jeon?"

I snap my head towards him as while bowing, I shake my head.

"No need for the inconvenience, sir," I bow my head again and walk upto my seat while grumbling.

"He seems to have a special type of hate for me," I mutter as Hoseok bumps his shoulder with mine. "You always take his words in the opposite way."

"So you mean what he does is right?" I amusingly ask.

"I mean, do your work."

He moves to his desk again, leaving a hyperactive me behind. Muttering several things under my breath, soon as the world investigation invades my mind, I growl.

"Ugh!" I loud groan leaves my mouth as everyone 'shh' me soon.

"What happened now, Jade?" Hoseok, enough exhausted to my useless whines already, asks as I practically shove my case's file in his face.

Seoul Gwangju, South Korea. 5 dead bodies were found in a storehouse which were brutally damaged. Mr. Han, coworker of the dead individual's was found in the same storehouse and was completely covered in blood. More evidences are yet to be found.

"Plus the first step is interrogation already!"

"Okay, I might agree that he does hate you," Hoseok chuckles as he pats my head softly.

I dial the phone number that is written on the sheet of paper and ask the office to prepare for an interrogation with the killer who is in prison. Cancelling the call, I place my head on my desk while sighing heavily— feeling exhausted even before starting up.

I did suggest Jungkook for starting our own company but no, he always takes my requests as a child's demands.

After a seconds, I glance up to check if Hoseok is still there and here this man is, working on his own case as his expressions shows firm determination. Even though I don't want to start the work now, yet I need to.

Why?

Because I don't have any other option.

"Oh, Jade!" Hoseok's voice calls my name as I turn back to face him.

"All the best."

Sending him a sleek smile, I wave.

"Thank you," I push back his chair with my foot with such a large force as the wheel chair goes several feet away from his own desk— his face painted with terror.

"Very much!" I snatch my scarf from the desk and walk out of the hell-zone.

The door of the office opens— a police officer glances in the room and finally his eyes settles on mine. He bows in respect and calls my name as I raise my hand while taking my diary in which all the questions are written along with the pen, I follow him.

Finally reaching the investigation room, I grab the doorknob and sigh deeply, even though the officer has assured me that he will be watching us all the time but those words never comforts me.

Gathering all of my strength, I open the door and take a step inside with my trembling breathe. Not even throwing a glance at the person who is sitting just beside the table, I only can feel his presence there. I slowly step inside the room and close it softly yet the sound comes rather loudly.

Cursing the carpenter that has manufactured the door, I walk towards my designated seat as I bow a little for respect but he never raises his head— taking it as a sign of dismay, I settle myself and place my belongings on the table.

When I feel the need of the hour, I glance at him and to my surprise he is already staring at me.

His face..

His face looks..

!!

His bangs are covering his forehead along with almost half of his eyes while his vision is fixed at me. His pale and smooth skin, his pink tinted lips are covered with cracks, wearing the clothes worn by typical criminals— he looks like a totally different person than how he was yesterday night.

For a while, almost 5 minutes, I stare back at him in awe. How can a person like him do such a horrendous work? Yesterday he looked like a deer caught in front of a car who was worried sick but now, was he caught yesterday only?

We hear a cough from the speaker that is fitted inside the room— indicating that its time to start the interrogation as I instantly get rid of my weird thoughts and fix my posture, looking at him again with a demanding look.

"Hello Mr. Han. I am Detective Jade who will be investigating your case. Hope we can get along," I introduce myself with a sweet smile plastered on my face, expecting for him to smile or even give me a nod as a response but nothing.

"Jade?" He mutters under his breathe and stares at me with knowing eyes. I bite my lip in embarrassment and purposely sigh heavily.

"I would like to ask you some questions, please answer them truthfully. It is the only way you can be saved," I request while grabbing my pen, I open them while doing the same with my diary.

"Have you ever been betrayed by someone who was the dearest to you?"

He asks, almost inaudibly while lowering his head. I jolt my head towards him as fortunately I did hear his wordings.

Finally he licks his lips, causing them to glitter under the only light of the room which is the bulb above our heads. I gulp nervously and lick mine as well- a habit of mine whenever I get nervous.

"I don't know even if I was, sadly I don't remember anything from-"

"Ms. Jeon? Please proceed with the interrogation."

"I am sorry!" I exclaim an apology as I look back at the boy who has again started his staring competition.

"Mr. Han, can you tell me what happened on 20 August, 2018? Tell me from the very start to the very end," I start the interrogation as I ready my pen to note down whatever he will answer me.

"We were at the company and by we, it was me and my best friend. He informed me that we were 5 including 3 more person, going on an inspection in which we had to inspect the quality and quantity of goods. All these things happened and when we walked inside, it was emitting a foul snell which immediately made us unconscious and when I woke up, they-"

He stops between his sentence as I also stop writing down the details but as soon as I hear a whimper, I immediately look at him to see he is trying his best to not let the tears fall out from his eyes by biting his lips.

It is such a heart breaking scene, watching him breaking down like this. I really want to go and hug him tightly, giving him the comfort that he really need at the moment.

I don't know what type of feeling is emerging within my heart. Although he was potentially a reason of my attack but it provokes me to comfort him. I am not acting like the normal me who stays neutral while looking at victims crying and begging in front of me- I just soothe them by words. Never have I ever felt the urge of physically comforting them so why this boy is becoming an exception?

I really don't understand.

I stay put in my seat as I grab the tissue case and hand it to him. He slowly moves his head upwards and looks at me with puffy, red and teary eyes that is actually speaking something else which is far away from this case.

Affection as well as..

Love?

I smile as he sniffles and takes out more tissues, wiping up his tears and snort.

"I am really sorry that after your friends were murdered, everyone is blaming you for the same. For now I will be taking my leave but if you feel the need of telling anything to me, I will be there for you."

I smile again as he nods.

"Good evening, Mr. Han," I stand up and walk towards the door. Almost getting outside the room, I spare a glance towards him as I witness the edges of his lips curving and when he moves his head towards me, he bows his head.

"Stay safe, Ms. Jeon. Please don't involve yourself in dangerous situations like, you get it right?"

Welp, I don't know how to react.

"Yes, Mr. Han, I understand."

I wave my hand towards him and immediately turn my back, just wanting to run to Jungkook and tell him everything that has happened today as well as yesterday.

The stupid me has not told him about me about the reason of my attack, actually the whole scene was omitted out due to the heat of the situation but now, I want to scream my lungs out at my brother who surely is going to give me the world's bestest advice.

He indeed is my mom, hehe.

Reaching my home, soon as I close the main door, I fall on the couch throwing all of my stress and worries out of my body. Moving abruptly to find my phone, I call Hoseok to get my belongings to my house, so does he. He hands me over my things and soon leaves saying he needs to work on his case too.

Sad life.

My stomach growls as I lazily heat my food in the oven and by starting the television, to check the latest updates on some of my favourite cases.

While eating, some of the memories from today flashes inside my head as I take a deep breathe. Remembering his words, I bite my lips.

Have you ever been betrayed by someone who was the dearest to you?

I don't even remember my past, let alone knowing if someone betrayed me or not. My friends, my family members, each one of them- I don't remember a thing.

I guess, I somehow can relate with his words.

Memories.

My memories have betrayed me.

Thinking all of these things makes me lose my appetite all of a sudden as I walk to my bedroom and crawl on my bed. My phone's screen light up as I check the screen.

Brodah
Have you eaten your food?

Me
Yes, brodah. Come soon, need to tell you something.

Brodah
Is my name still 'brodah' in your contacts. Jade, change it to Jungkook oppa, will you?

Me
N-N-N-N-NEVER

P.S. - I AM WAITING!

I message him back while giggling and lock my phone, planning on staying awake till he comes back home because of my excitement but my eyes seems to betray me too.
