Chapter 39: Realization
~from Mikasa's POV~
Yeah, I slipped in a fake test with (y/n)'s name on it and swapped out her real one because I wanted her to get caught for cheating, and yeah, I was the student who corroborated the story. So what?
(Y/n) pisses me off. Not only is she literally scared of everything (I've been testing that statement as of recently), but she fooled Eren into caring about her. I've been his friend longer, but he asks some other bitch to be his partner?
Oh, hell no.
Eren Jaeger is mine, and (y/n) should learn not to steal other people's possessions.
At least, that is what I thought...
...until I walked by my teacher's room to make sure (y/n) was wasting away in detention, only she wasn't the only one in the room.

The first thing I noticed were the red lights that kept flashing intermittently. I walked up to the classroom and peeked in. If I wasn't trained to have nerves of steel, my throat would be in my stomach right now.
(Y/n) was being loaded onto a stretcher, an oxygen mask over her mouth, and an unfamiliar boy who looked to be around my age was standing beside her unconscious form, gripping her hand tightly, his jaw clenched.
One of the EMT's asked him something and motioned for him to give them room, and the boy yelled back at them, an unrivaled ferocity in his eyes that caused the EMT to shrug and concede to let the boy into the ambulance, which had been pulled up in the parking lot just outside the room, visible through the room's windows.
The EMT's carried (y/n)'s stretcher to the ambulance and loaded her in. For a second, the boy had to let go of her hand so the stretcher could fit through the door, and the second he was outside, he grabbed right back on, his grip overtly tight.
Then the ambulance left with (y/n) it in, and the room was unearthly silent.
So I did the only thing I could do.
I went home.
~from Eren's POV~
We got out of practice early today, so I jogged over to my teacher's room to see if (y/n) was still serving detention, but the door was locked and the lights were off.
They must have found out that she was innocent and let her go home, I realized, smiling to myself. It's weird that they would suspect (y/n) in the first place. And who was that student who "saw her" cheating? Why would they lie about that? What do they have against (y/n)?
I decided to investigate it myself tomorrow. For now, I'd hurry home and have dinner.

When I got home, the house was quiet.
"Mom? (Y/n)? Mikasa?" I called out, walking towards the kitchen, where I saw my mom, her back to me.
I was about to talk to her when I realized that she was on the phone and her hand was shaking.
"Yes. I understand. Are they accepting visitors?" She sighed, leaning against the counter for support. "Yes, I understand. I'm so sorry," she whispered, her voice pained. "Call me when there's a change in her condition." She set down the phone on the counter, one hand on the phone and the other on her hip, her back bent slightly as though she were praying.
"Mom?" I asked quietly, and she started, turning quickly, her free hand flying to her heart.
"Oh, it's you, Eren," she said, letting out a deep breath and forcing a smile on her face. "How was school?"
"Who was on the phone, Mom?" I asked instead, ignoring her question, and she swallowed.
"Just..." she began, clearly trying to think of a passable lie, but she trailed off when she saw the look in my eyes. "Is there any way to get you to forget that you asked that question?"
I shook my head. "Who was it, Mom?"
She hesitated.
"Mom. Tell me the truth."
She nodded, biting her lip. "That was...Himuro."
I frowned. "Himuro? Why'd he call you? When'd he even get our number?"
"He wanted it so he could check in with (y/n)," she replied absently, avoiding the real question. Finally, sensing my determination, she met my eyes - really looked into them - and said, "Eren? You know that I love you, right?"
I blinked, startled. "Well, yeah, Mom." I blushed, looking away. "Don't say stuff like that."
She crushed me to her in a fierce hug. "I'm going to say things like that, Eren, because you're my son, and I never want to let you go. Do you understand?"
I nodded and pulled away to look at her face only to find that her cheeks were stained with tears. "Mom? What is this all about?"
She held up a hand to her mouth, her eyes reflecting an agony that I could net yet understand. "It's (y/n)," she finally whispered, her voice uneven. "She's in the hospital."
