Chapter 38: Trouble - and Then Some
~from (y/n)'s POV~
All throughout the week, you kept getting jump scares or screaming during class because there was a fake spider in your backpack or something. You had an idea of who it might be, but you didn't want to accuse her (what if she put in real spiders?!). You decided to just bear with it, even though your teachers were getting a bit annoyed with your squeamish behavior.
You were thinking over all of this when your first hour teacher handed out a test.
"Remember - this is not a partner test; I expect you to take it as individuals. If I catch any of you cheating, it will result in an automatic 0 on the test as well as detention after school. Now, begin!"
You started the test, answering the questions. You knew about 80% of the material and guessed on the rest before standing up to hand it in at the end of class.
"Here, Eren," Mikasa said, appearing out of nowhere. "I'll take yours up."
He grinned at her. "Thanks, Mikasa!"
She glared at you. "I'll take yours too."
Maybe this is a truce and she'll stop trying to scare me! "T-t-thanks," you stuttered, still shaking from the spider incident. "H-here you go!"
She took your paper and handed them in at the front desk, and then you left for second period.

You hid in the bathroom during advisory because you didn't want to see him just yet, and in your next class, the loudspeaker crackled to life (a very old life, that is). "(Y/n) to the main office. (Y/n) to the main office."
Everyone stared at you as you got up on trembling legs and began your trek across the school. When you got to the principal's office, you saw Eren in a chair outside the room.
"What's going on?" you asked him, and he shrugged, frowning.
"I'm not sure. I was just called down, too."
After a moment, the door opened inward and a voice said, "Come in."
You shrugged and followed Eren into the principal's office, which consisted of a heavy oak desk with two chairs on one side and one in the back.
"Have a seat," the principal said, and you swallowed nervously, sitting down. Eren followed suit.
"Do you know why you're here today?" the principal asked, and just then, you noticed your first hour teacher standing beside the desk.
You shook your head, looking back at the principal. "N-n-n-no..."
The principal nodded, and your teacher stepped forward. "Ackerman-san, Jaeger-san, I'm not going to waste your time. Please answer me honestly." He took a breath as you held yours. "Which of you cheated on my test this morning?"
Your eyes widened. "Cheated? What do you mean?"
His eyes narrowed. "You both handed in identical tests. Even the short response question was the same. You both made the same mistakes. So? Which of you was it?"
Eren looked over at you before looking back at the teacher. "Sensei, (y/n) wouldn't do something like that!"
"Then did you cheat?" the teacher asked.
Eren frowned. "No!"
The teacher looked at you smugly. "Then it was (y/n)."
Eren looked at you helplessly. "Wait, sensei! It- it was me. I cheated off of (y/n)'s paper," he lied, and you shook your head.
"Sensei, Eren wouldn't cheat either!"
"So is that your confession, (y/n)?" the teacher asked, frowning at you. "Honestly, I expected better from you. You're a new student, and yet you skip school all the time."
"But Sensei-"
He scowled at you. "Don't lie to me, (y/n). I was just asking you to see if you were going to be honest with me, but a different student already confirmed that you were seen cheating. I'm disappointed in you," he said. "Detention after school today in my room. Don't be late."
Then you and Eren were told to go back to class.

You and Eren walked in silence, side-by-side, until you came to an abrupt stop, your eyes wide.
"(Y/n)?" Eren said questioningly and turning to you. "What is it?"
"Eren, I really didn't cheat off of your test, I swear!" you said, your eyes tearing up at the thought of your close friend doubting you.
"(Y/n), I believe you," he said, giving you a half smile. "You wouldn't do something like that." He glared back at the office. "Don't worry, (y/N). I'll find a way to prove your innocence!"
You sighed in relief. "Thanks, Eren, but I don't care what they think, as long as you believe me." You shrugged, sighing. "Besides, they're partially right. I've missed too much school...That's my fault." Eren looked like he was about to protest, so you put your hand over his mouth. "Just tell the team that I can't make practice today and that I'm really sorry but I'll be there tomorrow, okay?" you asked, and you took your hand off his mouth so he could reply.
He blushed and looked away. "Y-y-yeah..." he mumbled.

At the end of the day, you went to your teacher's room, where he just frowned at you and pointed to a desk.
"I need to copy some papers. You'll stay in this room and write an essay reflecting on your actions," he said before leaving you alone.
You sat in your chair, staring at the blank piece of paper, but you felt kind of sick, so you decided to procrastinate a bit. He'd probably yell at you when you got back, but you really didn't feel well.
I should go to the nurse...you thought, but then you imagined his reaction. No, he'll just say I'm making excuses to get out of detention.
You decided to force yourself to hurry up and write the essay so you could leave and rest, but you only got through a single paragraph before your head started aching and your skin felt hot. You dropped the pencil as the shaking started, the quivering racking your whole body.
What is wrong with me? you wondered, and for the first time, you wished the teacher was back. Please, someone...
Your shaking fingers fumbled with your backpack, trying to get your cell phone out, and you finally succeeded.
Please, Himuro, you thought desperately as you held down one for speed dial. Please pick up!
Your fingers were shaking so badly that they kept bouncing off the numbers, but finally, after multiple attempts, a call to Himuro went through.
By the time it had rang three times, you were slumped on the floor, unconscious.
