Chapter 36: A New Home
~from (y/n)'s POV~
You woke up and looked around. Huh? That's when you felt an evil presence in the strange room...
"EEEEEK!" you shouted, nearly hitting the wall as you recoiled back. Watching you from across the room was Mikasa, her eyes narrowed and her lips set in a thin frown. "D-d-don't scare m-me like t-t-that," you stuttered out, eyes wide.
"I bet you're just playing an act to make everything think you're cute and innocent, right?" she replied coldly, glaring at me. "You just want to take Eren away for yourself."
"N-n-no I really am s-s-scared of everything!" you tried to defend, shivering and wrapping your arms around yourself.
Her eyes narrowed even further. "Yeah? Well, we'll see about that..."
Just then, the door open and a woman peeked her head in. "(Y/n)? Are you all right?" she immediately asked, face pale. "I heard a scream..."
She looks nice. "I'm okay n-now. But...um...w-where am I?"
"Oh!" She shook her head, smiling. "I'm so sorry! You probably were confused, right?"
I nodded, dazed, and she continued.
"I'm Eren's mom! Eren and your step-brother - Himuro, right? - brought you here to stay for a while." She beamed at you. "Welcome to the Jaeger household!"
"Eeeeeeeh?" you asked, taking everything in before bowing your head slightly. "P-p-please t-take care of m-m-me!"
Mrs. Jaeger laughed. "You'll be sharing Mikasa's room for now. She can show you around, right, Mikasa?" she asked, turning to the other girl.
Mikasa nodded, giving her a half smile, but as soon as Mrs. Jaeger left, she returned to glaring at me. "So, you're afraid of everything, huh?" she asked, continuing the conversation from earlier. Suddenly, she grinned, and a shiver ran down your spine. "This could prove interesting."

You walked to school with Eren and Mikasa, and although you started out walking beside them, Mikasa's glaring got to you and you fell back a bit. Then you started thinking of what had gotten you into this whole mess in the first place...
Levi...I don't understand...Why would you hit me? Without realizing it, tears formed in your eyes and you quickly wiped them away before Mikasa or Eren (who kept looking over his shoulder at you until Mikasa grabbed his arm and forcibly linked elbows with him) noticed.
As you walked, the thought of seeing Levi made you feel a bit, and you walked slower and slower.
Suddenly, you were alone, and you stopped walking. You didn't really want to go to school; that much was clear. However, you had a tendency to get lost as well...Normally, in this situation, you'd just call Himuro, but you'd been bothering him too much lately and making it hard on him. Plus, you couldn't quite place where you'd left your cell phone. With a sigh, you turned around and started walking back that way, hoping you'd eventually run into Eren's house, not that you remembered what it looked like.
***
You met with a stroke of luck when you passed by the market place.
"(Y/n)? Is that you?" asked a slightly familiar voice, and you turned, hesitating as Mrs. Jaeger came up to you. "Honey, I thought you went to school already," she said, sounding curious, and you nodded slightly.
"I..." You dropped your gaze to the sidewalk. "I don't think I'm going today," you said quietly before quickly looking up. "Are you going to make me go?"
Mrs. Jaeger's worried look faded and was replaced by a soft smile meant only for you. "Nah. What's one missed day? If you don't feel like going, then I'll keep this one time a secret between you and me. All right, (y/n)?"
You nodded, and she straightened up.
"However, there is one condition for my silence."
You held your breath. What is it? Will she kick me out of her house? Or tell me to stop being friends with Eren? Or maybe-
"You have to help me shop for dinner! Okay? Can you do that?" she asked with a smile, and you returned her smile gratefully.
"All right then!" she announced. "Let's go pick out some-" She was interrupted by the ringing of her cell phone. Rolling her eyes with a slight smile, she accepted the call. "Hello?"
"(Y/N) IS MISSING! I CAN'T FIND HER ANYWHERE!" you heard Eren yelling on the other end.
"Oh?" Mrs. Jaeger replied with a grin, turning to you and winking.
"MOM, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! (Y/N) COULD GET LOST IN A CONCRETE ROOM WITH NO DOORS!"
You winced. Ouch, Eren. That kind of hurts...Although it's the truth...
"Honey, I think that she's fine-" Mrs. Jaeger began, but Eren cut her off.
"NO, MOM! WE HAVE TO FIND HER! WHAT IF SHE'S IN TROUBLE?!"
Mrs. Jaeger gave me a soft smile. "Eren, it's fine. (Y/n) is here with me."
"EEEEH? (Y/N) IS WITH YOU? PUT HER ON THE PHONE!"
She rolled her eyes. "I didn't kidnap her, stupid son of mine." She held the phone away from her ear. "(Y/n)?" she asked in a gentle voice. "Do you want to talk to Eren?"
You shook your head, letting your bangs hide your eyes.
"That's all right," she said, and then she held the phone back up. "Eren, honey? Mmhmm. (Y/n)'s here, but she can't talk right now. We'll see you later. Love you, honey!"
"MOM!"
"Bye!"
She hung up the phone and winked at me. "Now! Let's shop for dinner!"
***
Eren's mom is actually pretty cool, you thought to yourself while shopping. As though sensing your reluctance to speak, she kept up the majority of the conversation by herself and was content to let you just nod and shake your head.
On the way home, she stopped, turning to you. "(Y/n)?"
"Mmhmm?"
"Can you tell me why you didn't want to go to school today? Don't worry; I won't tell Eren. I'm just worried about you, hon," she said, and you smiled sadly at her.
"There's just someone at school who I don't really want to see right now," you said quietly, and she nodded.
"But you can't avoid them forever, right?" she asked softly, and you sighed.
"I don't think I'll have to. I'm pretty sure he doesn't care about me one way or another," you said, your voice barely coming out as you stared at your shoes.
"That's not true, (y/n)," Mrs. Jaeger said, lifting your chin up with a smile. "How could anyone not care about a girl as sweet as you?"
You blushed and avoided eye contact. "That's not true..." When you realized that she was staring at you, you look up. "What is it?"
She pursed her lips. "I kind of want to steal you for my own daughter...but that would create complications later," she added in a murmur to herself. "Never mind! Let's go get dinner ready!"
You followed her, basking in the glow of her unconditional love.
What 'complications' was she talking about?
