Chapter 27: Tryouts
~from (y/n)'s POV~
You really wanted to see Himuro play basketball (not because he was a beautiful work of art in his natural habitat) but because he'd always been supporting you. Now, it was your turn!
If, that is, you got the manager position.
Koganei gave you a flyer with details about basketball tryouts the next morning with a hopeful smile, and you nodded.
"I think I'm going to-eeeek!" you shrieked, cringing in your seat.
Eren was standing behind you, immediately retracting his hand from where he'd tapped you on the shoulder. "Sorry, (y/n)! I forgot that you get skittish about stuff like that," he apologized immediately, wincing. "Anyhow, I was wondering- hey, what's that in your hands?" he asked, peering down at the flyer you were holding. "Basketball tryouts?"
"Ehhh, not for me," you quickly explained. "Well, I mean...I'm not trying out for the guys' basketball team," you spluttered, flushing. "I mean-"
"(Y/n) is going to be our manager!" Koganei announced happily, fist pumping the air.
Eren looked at you in surprise. "Is that true, (y/n)?"
You shrugged, still blushing slightly. "Well, I mean, I haven't gotten the position yet or anything," you said softly.
"But do you want to be the manager?" Eren rephrased, still watching you.
Looking down at your desk and your clasped hands, you nodded slightly. "I- I think so."
There was a slight pause as everyone seemingly waited for Eren's response. Finally, "Well, good luck, (y/n)!" he said, smiling before walking back to Mikasa, who was (as you'd already guessed) trying to incinerate you with her pupils.
Looking away quickly before you let out a small scream, you turned back to your group with a nervous smile.
~from Eren's POV~
The basketball team? (Y/n)? I sweat dropped at the thought. With Mikasa back, I haven't had much time to talk to (y/n) lately, but it wasn't like it was completely my fault.
What's with those athletic guys always hanging out with (y/n)? I wondered, sending another glance their way. None of them looked particularly mean - but then again, Haizaki hadn't seemed like he'd assault a girl either.
However, my mind quickly wandered back to the main issue. Basketball? Even if those guys weren't approaching (y/n) with bad intentions, they were still guys approaching (y/n), and if she became manager of the basketball team, there would be even more muscular guys around her...
My mind was made up.
I would join the basketball team.
~from (y/n)'s POV~
The next day, you went to the gymnasium after school to try out for the position of manager. As soon as you walked in, you saw guys already warming up - some familiar, some strangers.
Koganei waved from the far side of the gym, and Furihata nodded at you, with Sakurai bowing and mumbling something that you easily interpreted as an unnecessary apology. You went over and sat on the bench with two other girls, both of whom were watching the boys around you and giggling behind their hands as they whispered in each other's ears.
With five minutes until the tryouts started, you had glanced over most of the players, trying to figure out how good they were and who you thought would make the team.
That's when you heard a familiar voice.
"Get out of my way, brat."
"You're too short for basketball! Just go home, midget!" a tall boy said, leaning towards a figure that you couldn't see but could identify all too well.
"I said, get out of my way before I separate your head from your neck, you waste of biotic life matter," Levi snapped, his eyes narrowed dangerously.
You quickly ran over and stood a few feet away from the two, as you were not foolish enough to get between them. "Levi?" you asked, deciding to start simple. "I didn't know that you were trying out for the basketball team."
For some reason, he glared at you, as though it was your fault. "I wasn't going to," he spat out before returning his glare to the giant before you.
You were about to attempt to smooth out their ruffled feathers when the gym door banged open.
"Sorry I'm late!" announced yet another familiar - yet unexpected - voice. Eren, panting slightly, shot you a grin. "Hey, (y/n)."
"Eren?" you asked, walking towards him and letting WWIII brew in your wake. "You're trying out for the basketball team, too?"
He nodded, smiling hesitantly. "I just thought that I'd give it a try."
You were too surprised to have any sensible thoughts. "Well...um...g-g-good l-luck," you stuttered, and he grinned.
"Will do, (y/n)!"
Then the coach blew the whistle, and all of the boys who were trying out formed a single line while the coach inspected them and had them introduce themselves.
It was all going fine until the coach got to Levi...
"You're a bit short for this, aren't you?" the coach asked bluntly, and Levi glared at him.
Levi! You can't do that, not to a coach!
"So what?" he snapped, and the coach narrowed his eyes.
"What position do you play?"
Levi just stared at him. "Position? What position?"
"That's what I asked you. Tell me what position you are."
Levi glared at the coach. "Does it matter?" He exhaled sharply. "Whatever. All of them."
LEVI!!!
"Are you playing around with me?" the coach asked, taking a clear dislike to your brother.
You had to do something, and fast! Levi's dream of playing basketball not that it actually existed in the first place is in my hands! "Point guard!" you shouted, clapping a hand over your mouth when you realized how loud you'd been on accident. When the coach slowly turned to look at you, you said, "He plays as point guard," although you were far more quiet than the first time.
"And who are you?" the coach asked, wary but not necessarily hating you on the spot.
"I'm (y/n). I w-w-want to b-be the m-m-manager," you stumbled out, nervous beyond belief that the coach was talking to you.
"Hmm..." was all he said. Then, "Well, that's up to the coach to decide."
Your jaw dropped. "Wait - aren't you the coach?"
He shook his head. "I'm just the supervisor. Your coach is..."
