background info — (headcanon): Shie Hassaikai requires for children up to the age of 13 to do housework around the base to allow them to acquire the skills to survive in the real world.
chisaki and the reader start out as 10 year olds.
As a child, it was difficult to dream big. When you're so small, there's so little that you are able to actually do.
Often, if big dreams and goals weren't achieved, it led to feelings of uselessness and sorrow — regret.
That was exactly why Kai Chisaki refused to allow himself to dream wildly; freely without abandon or care.
Being abandoned at a young age was enough for the brunette. He really wasn't looking to be heartbroken by his parents and far-fetched dreams.
Chisaki was quiet, hard-working, and practical. He didn't believe in superstitions, or even little motivational speeches. He just believed that there was no way that life was going to change, and that everything would remain stagnant in his life.
Chisaki fully believed that he'd always be an underling under Pops' command; obedient and quiet. He would always be at the bottom, he believed. Not a single thought of working to change flitted into his mind.
You were the opposite of him.
A wild dreamer, you often daydreamed during your work of cleaning the wooden floorboards. The mop would slip slightly from your grasp as you stared off into space, head filled with thousands of colorful thoughts.
No, you weren't an airhead. You were just so creative and positive; always believing that it was possible to improve, and it was shocking to Chisaki. He'd be lying though, if he said that he didn't find it endearing.
—
"Hey, Kai," you had said to him one day with a light tap of the shoulder, and he had turned, face covered in soot from the fireplace.
Chisaki has been assigned to check on it, and it was rough. It hadn't been taken care of for a while, so there was tons of dust and soot being disturbed as he shifted through the ashes of the wood.
"...what is it, Y/N?" Chisaki asked in a flat tone, attempting to discreetly rub the dust off his face with the back of his hand, but failed.
With a smile, you reached forward to brush it off his smooth skin, causing Chisaki to stiffen up. Face flushing with a blush, the male then cleared his throat, clearly embarrassed by the intense, uncharacteristic reaction that had been drawn out of him.
"Kai, I've been thinking..." you then began to say with a giggle, hands brushing down to take your cleaner ones in his slightly dirty hands. You gazed deep into his golden eyes, causing him to shift uncomfortably under your intense gaze.
"Pops really likes you, and therefore I think you have a chance of becoming the next head of the Yakuza. Kai, do you know what this means? You can live a better life than what you have now!" You then said with a wide smile.
Chisaki looked at you with lidded golden eyes, seemingly looking bored on the outside but on the inside, gears were turning inside his head. He was thinking — thinking hard.
There was a strange, indescribable tug in his chest as he looked at the happy expression on your face. Did you really believe in him that much..?
"...you believe that I can really do it?" He questioned softly, looking down, eyeing the sight of your hands clasped with his.
His heart fluttered when you nodded almost immediately, a determined expression on your face. You leaned in close to him.
"We'll work hard together! Just you and me..."
Seemingly controlled by another sort of entity — though he knew this was all his own doing — Chisaki nodded without thinking.
"I'll make you proud..." he murmured, surprising you by wrapping his arms around you, pulling you into a tight hug.
Hugs weren't Chisaki's thing. Heck, touch in general just wasn't his thing. But you made him change.
You made him a better version of himself.

Five years later. . .

"How have the missions under Pops' supervision been? I heard that they were ridiculously difficult from Kurono," you asked during the rare moments when you and Chisaki could sit around and just enjoy each other's company, hand in hand.
This time the two of you had decided to sit out in the garden of the Shie Hassaikai. Pretty flowers and birds surrounded you and Chisaki, and with a breathy sigh, you leaned your head against him.
The two of you had started dating two years ago, after an incident during chores that involved you stumbling and landing on top of Chisaki — resulting in an awkward first kiss. Kurono had laughed his head off when he ran in to check on the two of you.
"...he's just being whiny like always..." he simply replied, voice soft as he glanced at the top of your head.
...whenever Chisaki looked at you or spoke to you, there was always this weird swelling feeling in his chest, and his heart would pound against his rib cage.
It was like he couldn't get enough of you.
Silence passed over the two of you, before Chisaki decided to speak. He had never let go of the promise he had promised you back then.
"Pops says that I'm a good fit for Yakuza leader," he then said quietly, and immediately, your head snapped up to look at him.
"I'm so proud of you, Kai!" You said happily as you tackled him into a tight hug, drawing a loud wheeze from him when he was knocked over.
"You're going to make it in no time. I'm just... so proud of you. You've grown so much as a person, and your mindset has changed," you said breathlessly, a cheerful smile on your face. Then, your gaze dropped from his for a split second, and you took a deep breath.
"I... love you, Kai. I would never ask for anyone else..."
Heart pounding loudly in his chest, Chisaki offered you a hesitant, half smile, causing your eyes to widen.
"I love you too, Y/N."
Without a pause, you immediately pressed your lips on his.

Four years later . . .
—
Chisaki finally did it.
He was the leader of the Shie Hassaikai, and you were the person by his side. You were his ( queen / king ), the one he loved the most.
Pops had ended up retiring, and Chisaki was the first choice to take over. Kurono had been bitter about it, but he respected Pops' decision.
Hand in yours, Chisaki led you out back into the small, stuffy room with the fireplace. This was the place where it had all happened.
"I promised you, Y/N... I hope I have made you proud," he said, searching your gaze, and he was surprised to see tears streaking down your cheeks. A wide smile was on your face.
"...Kai... You're just... so... perfect to me... You've changed so much..."
Without saying anything else, Chisaki leaned down and kissed you deeply.
The two of you were 'royalty' now.
