When I trudged back to the village, my shoulders were slouched, head bowed.

Darn it... I failed the simple mission I was given—!

The smug face of Kai's stupidly hot face swirled in my mind, and I grit my teeth, nails digging into my cold, slightly-sweaty palms. The pressure there increased further when I thought of Hari, his loyal henchman who was ridiculously handsome—

The mere thought of the look of hatred that had been on the white-haired male's face sent an intense shiver through my spine.

I had a bad feeling about that guy. A really bad feeling, like he had... malicious intentions.

I shook my head at the thought, frowning as I sent a rock on the road skidding into the dark grass with a swift kick.

God, what are you thinking, Y/N?! All vampires have bad intentions, you should know this by now—

I then decided to report back to the man, preparing myself to tell him about my failure. Gosh, I hated that word. It made me feel useless, when I really wasn't.

I was respectable, with several vampire kills under my belt. In this day and age, vampire hunters usually only had one or two kills, before they got too old for the job.

But me? I had five to six kills — all vampires that had been wreaking havoc on towns. I recalled killing a flirty vampire by the name of 'Dabi' — it had been a shame to kill him, but he was ruthless with his kills, choosing to burn his victims with cigarettes before sucking the blood out of them.

Another notable vampire was Shigaraki — Tomura Shigaraki. He had killed his whole family in a fit of bloodlust, and then proceeded to prey on many more unsuspecting humans too. Stabbing the stake through his heart had been difficult — I nearly got bitten — but I had managed to do it.

Now I was to Kai Chisaki, who proved to be the most difficult out of all the vampires I had faced so far. It wasn't that he was extremely powerful, it was just that I... couldn't find it in myself to stab him.

There was something about him that made me want to stick around — to know more about him.

Sighing, I then decided to go to the building where the older man had assigned me the mission.

When I entered, the man was sitting there expectantly. His eyes flickered in excitement at the sight of me, and he stood up from his seat, hands placed flat on the wooden surface of his desk.

"So... how'd it go?"

He questioned, adjusting his tie in what seemed like giddiness. I held my breath, looking away. I couldn't bare to watch the change of excitement to disappointment.

"Well..."

I began, taking a deep breath, before I decided to muster enough courage to meet his eyes.

"I failed."

The smile on the male's face faded away, and it was quickly turned into a scowl of anger. He slammed a hand on the desk, and he spat, face turning slightly red,

"Didn't you say that you'd 'do it in no time?' What happened to the good things I've heard about you—?!"

I flinched at the surge of anger I was met with, and trying to keep calm, I responded quietly,

"I'm really sorry, sir. He was too difficult for me."

However, the man wasn't listening to me anymore. He was now looking down at his hands, unclenching and clenching them as he muttered under his breath,

"When will Chisaki finally die? I've been hunting him for 30 years, damn it—"

My eyes widened at that.

So he was that guy.

The guy who had driven himself to the brink of insanity trying to hunt down this vampire — that was this man here. The person was unnamed, but I had a feeling it was him.

"Sir, I—"

I couldn't complete my sentence before a white blur darted into the room. The sound of a gun firing filled the air, and I watched in horror as a bullet pierced the wall — nearly hitting the man.

The man swore loudly, hands scrambling for something in his cabinet. I looked to the blur, and realized it was Hari, who was staring at the man with hatred.

"What the heck are you doing here—?"

I let out in a confused manner, and Hari simply rolled his dark eyes.

"This guy here is a jerk. Kai sent me here to get rid of him."

At the mention of Kai's name, I perked up, looking around for a glimpse of the handsome, germaphobic vampire. Upon further inspection, I didn't see his trademark golden eyes and gloves, so I sighed. Meanwhile, Hari was already readying his gun again, annoyance clear in his features.

"You idiot, I don't have time to talk, f*ck—"

He swore as he shot another bullet at the man, missing again. At this point in time, the man had already taken out a stake — one made of sleek oak wood. The man then spat,

"I'm not going to let you and your dumb boyfriend run around killing people like this anymore—!"

"Damn it, I'm not dating him, why does everyone think that—?!"

Hari complained as he dashed forward, his fingers elongating into dark claws. He slashed at the man, and blood splurted from the wounds.

The fight was getting a little intense, so I decided to jump in. I wasn't sure which side I was fighting on, but I had to do something. Before I could produce my stake from my pocket, a familiar voice spoke out.

"Hari, stop."

Like an obedient pet at its owner command, Hari jumped back, though he snarled a bit, eyes glowing a bright crimson. His claws hadn't yet shrunk, and his fangs had grew — though they were barely visible against his pale skin.

"...so we meet again..."

A cold gust of wind blew in next to me, and I shivered. The smell of lemon suddenly engulfed me, and I felt cold.

Kai was standing right behind me.

A cold hand then gripped onto my shoulder, and I gasped as I was pushed to the side. Kai stepped forward, and I saw dark claws emerging from his fingertips.

"Old man, when will you learn to give up?"

The vampire said loudly, muscles tensing as he readied to pounce. Hari looked to his boss for instructions, but he wasn't looking at him.

"Kai, please, don't—"

I let out, but Kai threw himself forward — straight at the man. The man narrowed his eyes, and brandished his stake, ready to strike. The pointed end was directly straight at Kai's chest — where his heart was. The golden-eyed male was going too fast to stop—!

I watched in horror.

Kai was going to...!

Thump.

Suddenly, a white blur pushed Kai out of the way, and the man stabbed out.

A sickening noise of a pained groan; weak and slightly warbled by liquid.

Blood.

Kai skidded to the side, eyes narrowed as he looked down at his claws, flexing them.

"Hari, I told you—"

His voice cut off abruptly when he looked up. Kai stared in horror at his companion.

Hari was glaring at the man with the stake, dark blood oozing from the corner of his mouth. Scarlet was spreading from the point where the stake was lodged in his chest.

"Hari—!"

Kai let out a pained cry, golden eyes distraught as he stared at his friend.

Weakness. Something that vampires never showed.

Hari then turned his head slightly to look at Kai, and then his dark eyes flickered to me. They were growing dull, and the claws on his hands vanished.

"I - I'm sorry..."

He whispered weakly, before his body dissolved into dark ash, coating the desk of the man's desk.

The man was shocked, body trembling as he stood there. Blood was dripping down the side of his face, but his expression had morphed into one of glee. He turned to Kai.

"I've - I've killed your boyfriend! I've... I've really done it—!"

Clenching my teeth, I stepped forward. Rage filled me. I felt for my weapon.

I hadn't really liked Hari all that much, but he didn't deserve to die.

Kai stopped me with a cold arm. I looked to him.

His gaze had grown dark.

Kai then dashed forward suddenly.

It all happened in a blur — one second the man was alive, and the next second he wasn't. The man had turned into a bloody puddle, and Kai's face was splattered with blood.

Turning around, the male licked at blood surrounding his mouth, fangs tainted with the crimson liquid. Kai furrowed his eyebrows at the taste.

"Gross. Tastes horrible."

He commented flatly, and I held my breath.

That... was violent.

But then again, the man had killed Hari. Hari, Kai's companion. Without him, it seemed like... there was something — someone missing from the duo I had come to know.

"I hate doing this, but... Hari..."

Kai muttered, frowning. He looked down at his hands, bloody and sharp from his dark claws. He closed his golden eyes.

"I'm a monster."

"Kai, no..."

I let out softly, before coming forward to hug him. His body was cold and extremely stiff, and the warm feeling of blood smeared over my skin, but I didn't care.

"You're not. You did it for him. You did it for Hari..."

I whispered, and he just looked away. We stood there in silence, not saying anything.

I knew that things would never be the same again.
