Fish
"C'mon Kai! We have to get there quick, I think it'll rain soon!"
I called over my shoulder, eyes glancing up to the slightly tinged gray sky, the clouds seemingly starting to get heavy with rain. Overhaul trailed after me, his hands in his green coat pockets. He looked like he didn't want to be here, and I knew that was true. I had dragged him along to feed the fish in the nearby pond near the base, silver boxes near the water providing tubes of fish food.
"I still don't get why you want to feed the damn fish so much..."
Overhaul complained, his voice straining a bit as he took his hands out of his pockets so that he could stretch an arm over his head. I could see Chrono and the rest of the Shie Hassaikai shadowing us to ensure our safety. Rappa looked the most excited out of the bunch, his large fists swinging from side to side as he walked, head swiveling from side to side to look around at the scenery.
"I just love the fish so much, they're so cute!"
I responded, turning my head back around to look forwards, and I could hear Overhaul muttering something under his breath. I couldn't hear entirely what he was saying, but I heard traces of 'you' and 'cute.'
When I finally reached the pond, I quickly ran over to the dispenser for the fish food first. I dug around in my hoodie pockets for 10 cents, as marked on the label of the machine, but I came up with nothing. I pouted and looked down at the ground, Overhaul finally catching up to me. He peered over my shoulder at what I was looking at, and he sighed, pushing me out of the way gently.
"I'll pay for it..."
Overhaul said, taking a dime out of one of his pant pockets, grimacing as he held it in his gloved hand. I knew that he found money to be very dirty, hence why Chrono and Mimic dealt with the money from business deals instead.
"Ah, it's fine, I'll just-"
I began to say, not wanting to make him uncomfortable when he inserted the coin into the slot, the silver piece of metal making a loud thunk as it hit the bottom. When it hit the bottom, it triggered a tube of fish food to come out from the bottom of the machine, which Overhaul bent down and picked up for me.
"Thanks, Kai..."
I said as he handed it to me, and he stayed silent, yellow eyes not meeting my gaze. He seemed to be a bit grossed out by the germs he had just come in contact with in such a short amount of time. I bit my lip, reaching my free hand to touch his shoulder.
"I-"
I began to say before Overhaul sighed and turned his piercing gaze on me, his voice sounding a bit frustrated, probably not used to being nice,
"Just go enjoy yourself, alright?"
I stared at him, in slight awe, and he furrowed his eyebrows, looking away again from me with a slight blush on his face. I could guess that he probably had his lips in a pout under his black face mask. He looked like a little like an angry puppy, which made me feel warm inside.
"A-Alright then!"
I said, before turning to the pond and walking towards the water side. I looked into the water, and was greeted by the sight of many colorful koi fish. Some of them were white, some red, and some orange. They splish and splashed in the water, and I quickly popped open the canister, pouring some pellets into my hand and throwing them out to the fish. This action caused the fish to immediately swarm towards the food, splashing a little water towards me, which drew a delighted giggle from me.
Behind me, I could hear the Shie Hassaikai fighting over who was going to feed the fish, Rappa's voice the loudest among all of them. I heard some yelling and then some thuds, and suddenly Rappa was next to me, a tube of fish food in his large hands.
"Hi, Y/N!"
He said to me happily, and I wondered if something really good happened. I decided to ask while pouring some more pellets into my hand, throwing them into the water.
"Uh, what happened?"
"Oh, no, not much. I just got to push Overjerk into the water-"
Rappa said cheerfully, copying my actions, and I immediately spun around to look for my boyfriend. He was huddled next to Chrono, body shivering, but his eyes were livid as he stared at Rappa. Chrono was trying to calm him down by rubbing a towel up and down comfortingly on his wet clothes.
From here, I could see that Overhaul had gotten a rash on the side of his face, the side effect of him coming in contact with too many germs at once. The water was murky in the pond, and it was probably only suitable for the koi.
"Ah-"
I quickly rushed over to Overhaul when I spotted him taking off his glove, and I could hear Rappa cheering behind me.
"Yay, Overjerk, fight me!"
"K-Kai! Are you alright?"
I said, leaning forward with my arms open to hug him, and he shrunk away from me. His mask was wet, so I pulled it down quickly. Chrono stepped aside quickly, averting his eyes to give us privacy.
"D-Don't touch me, Y/N! I'm disgusting, and gross-"
Overhaul's voice broke at the end, and I knew that he was freaking out a bit, so I quickly hugged him, not minding at all how my clothes got soaked as well. I nuzzled his cheek, kissing it, and he stared at me in awe.
"W-Why are you doing this-"
He asked me, his face turning a bit pink from the situation, and I smiled up at him, his eyes widening at the sight.
"'Cause I love you, silly!"
The blush on his face deepened, and he had to look away from me again. He looked a bit emotional.
"C'mon, let's go!"
I said, pulling on his slightly wet hand, and he let himself be dragged along, Chrono following behind silently. When we got to where I was before, the Shie Hassaikai was already crowded around the water side. Deidoro was slouched on the side against a rock, too drunk to be standing like usual, while Mimic walked around yelling at everyone to be on their best behavior.
"Here!"
I said, taking Overhaul's hand and shoving some pellets from the tube into his gloved palm. He seemed disgusted as he held the pellets, and I told him,
"Throw them into the water! It's fun!"
Overhaul hesitantly threw the small brown spheres into the water, making a small noise of surprise when the fish swarmed around the area. His eyes lit up, and I giggled a bit.
Overhaul looked so much like a child; carefree and innocent. Not at all like the Kai Chisaki he was today; a cold, ruthless Yakuza leader.
"This... is sort of fun, I guess..."
He said curtly, and I immediately gave him more pellets.
"Here, let's feed the fish together."
I said, and he nodded, smiling a bit.
Overhaul seemed to have forgot about his wet clothes, and that was my whole goal. The whole Shie Hassaikai spent the rest of the day at the pond having fun and feeding the koi, until it started pouring rain.
We quickly left after that.
