Chapter 36: Thwap

The sound of Natasha's foot tapping against the tile floor was loud in the vacancy of the room. It was explosive in her sensitive ears, bouncing and echoing off the close-quartered walls. But, she'd rather the uncomfortable ringing in her ears than the sound of her own shallow breathing.

"Are you just going to stand there or are you going to help me down?"

Nat looked up sharply. Her blue eyes hardened to ice when they met Steve Rogers's face. She resolved to tapping her foot harder in response, if only to drown out the sound of his voice.

"Nat."

Thwap, thwap, thwap.

"Natasha."

Thwap, thwap, thwap, thwap, thwap.

"Natasha! Stop!"

The room fell into an eerie silence as the assassin's foot stilled. Though, the quiet somehow felt suffocatingly thicker.

Natasha stole quick glances around the room before speaking. A LEGO set on the dresser, multiple Star Wars posters tacked on the walls, comic books and school work strewn across the desk. It was such a innocent space-the perfect space for a growing teenage boy to thrive in.

Not the place to strangle ones teammate.

"I remember," Natasha's voice was cold, "agreeing that Peter needed a break from being hero, that he needed time to be a teenager. But i don't remember agreeing that he was a threat that needed to be controlled." When she said this, she met Steve's eyes. They were filled with a teeming anger, boiling over with a strange type of determination. But the more Natasha searched those watery orbs of blue, the less she wanted to. The spy in her could dig up every emotion in the book just by the way his eyes shone, and she knew that no matter how skilled she may be, how hard she looked and for how long, she'd never find a drop of remorse in his eyes. Because no matter how many people were against him, Steve Rogers truly didn't think he was wrong.

"But after this, after you strangled Tony, the man who's raising Peter, holding together the Avengers, and giving you a home? It seems to me that you're the threat that needs to be controlled, not Peter Parker." Nat spat the words out of her mouth as if they burned like acid on her tongue. It hurt to say it, it hurt to admit it, but Natasha knew it was true. Steve had gone too far, one too many times. She couldn't pretend that she didn't see it anymore.

She wasn't just some assassin blindly following orders anymore.

Steve thrashed in his spider-web prison. His blue eyes were afire with rage now, towards Nat or the situation, she did not know.

"Natasha!" He roared, voice splintering the air. The redhead didn't flinch. "Natasha, cut me down! You don't seriously believe that bullshit?!"

And that was her cue to leave.

Not even remembering why she'd come in the first place, Natasha turned on her heel and walked from the room, Captain America hurling accusations at her back as she went.

"Spider-Man needs to be controlled! He is only a child!"

"Tony is putting these thoughts in your head! You aren't really on his side!"

And when she'd finally turned the corner, starting down the hallway:

"I thought you were on my side. You really are the two-faced spy they made you to be."

The assassin found herself sprinting down the hallway on weak legs, flaming red hair billowing behind her as she raced to no where, but away from there.

I <3 Natasha, although Petey pie is my favorite. Comment your favs!!!
