Chapter 23: So, the food was good
Clint cooked mac and cheese.
It was good mac and cheese, don't get him wrong, but Tony just thought mac and cheese wasn't dinner. And it definitely wasn't something to be discussing fatherly feelings over.
Peter kept his eyes trained on his plate, Tony noticed.
And god, how he hated how he noticed.
But he wasn't eating. Why wasn't he eating? Surely the kid was hungry, with his spidey metabolism and all. Tony had seen the kid scarf down a feast worthy for a king in ten seconds flat! So, why wasn't he eating now?
"Ahem," Clint broke the awkward silence with a very obvious throat-clearing. "How's everyone enjoying the food?"
"It's good," Nat said plainly. Tony didn't blame her, she had kinda been dragged into this involuntarily.
"Yeah," Tony was quick to agree. "It's very..cheesy."
Peter blew air out of his nose. "Well, no duh it's cheesy. It's literally macaroni and cheese, da-Tony."
"And there it is!" Clint exclaimed, throwing down his fork in triumph. "Finally! I cant take any more of this awkward dinner."
Peter flushed a very dark shade of red and averted his eyes back down to his untouched plate. Tony pursed his lips and exchanged a look with Natasha.
"Our plan was better," Nat said, taking a bite of macaroni.
Tony nodded. "Much more subtle."
If possible, Peter's face burned even deeper. He shot the billionaire an incredulous look. "You had a plan?!" He exclaimed.
Nat shrugged like it was no big deal. "I mean, we thought it'd be harder to get you to admit it. Turns out, we just needed Clint." At that, the archer beamed proudly.
Peter grimaced and the room fell into an uncomfortable silence before Tony spoke up once again.
"I wish Pep were here," he sighed, pushing away his plate. "She'd know what to say."
Nat cocked an eyebrow. "Just say what you feel," she said then nudged Clint in the ribs with her elbow. He yelped. "We were just leaving anyway." The two assassins fled from the room, leaving the dynamic duo alone with the mac and cheese.
"So, what would Ms. Pepper say?" Peter asked in a quiet voice after a few seconds. Tony sighed and laid his hands out on the table.
"I'm not sure, kid. But it would the right thing to say in a situation like this," Tony admitted.
Peter placed his hands next to the older man's so that they weren't quite touching, but close enough.
"Then say what you want to say," Peter said simply.
Tony groaned. "I don't know if it will be the right thing to say. C'mon kid, you know I'm not good with feelings."
Peter frowned and ignored the man's plea for help. "You say that like you have something in mind. Please, just spit it out so that this awkward situation can end and i can go die in peace," He deadpanned.
Tony cracked a smile. "Alright, kid. But only if you promise to die peacefully after I'm long gone." He took a deep breath. "Look, i know that you see me as your father figure and I'm not gonna beat around the bush-."
"You've been beating around the bush all day. You and Ms. Natasha has a plan!"
"You're right. Fine. I see you as my son, as well. There, i said it. Can this meeting please be adjourned now? I desperately need to talk to my soon-to-be wife," Tony gushed before pushing off the table.
"If you're going to ask her to confirm whether you fucked up or not, lemme just tell you that you didn't," Peter said tentatively before standing as well. "That was the perfect thing to say."
Tony looked almost disgusted. "And over a plate of too-cheesy mac and cheese?"
The teen smirked. "And that's why i didn't eat it. I lived with May for years, i can practically smell bad cooking from a mile away."
Tony scoffed. "Nope, I'm pretty sure that's just the spider in your DNA."
"No, i assure you, it's a well-developed skill set of mine. Along with shooting webs and sticking to walls."
"Ah, i see. I'll add that to the list."
The pair continued to bicker playfully as they walked from the room, both of them overflowing with an immense feeling of contentment after a rough day of entanglement.
Guyyyyys! Where should i go with this story?! I need ideas! Please, please, pleassseee comment what you wanna read next! It would be a great help!
