Chapter 9
Screaming.
Loud and agonizing screaming suddenly woke me up.
I jolted up, unaware of my surroundings, but the memories of last night came rushing back, and I whipped my head, finding Liam next to me.
He was screaming, yelling, shaking uncontrollably.
He was having a nightmare!
I shook him awake. "Liam... it's okay, it's just a nightmare," I calmly said.
"No! NO STOP," he kept yelling. I shook him harder, wanting to wake him and protect him from this awful terror.
"Liam," I said louder. His eyes shot up at me, and he seemed to be surprised to see me. "It's okay. It was just a nightmare. I'm here," I said. He continued to examine me quietly, not saying a word before he pulled me in his arm, wrapping his still shaking hand around my body.
"I'm sorry," he cried. "I'm so sorry, Noah," I tensed under his touch. His grip on me is getting tighter. "I don't want to hurt her," his voice broke.
I didn't know what to do. He thought I was Noah. He was trapped in this nightmare, and I couldn't move to do anything. I heard his voice under me and felt him weep onto my shoulder as he continued to beg for forgiveness.
But I knew I had to pull him out; I needed to help him.
"Liam, it's me. Storm," I said, trying to pull him out of his nightmare. He dropped his arms, releasing me from his hold.
"Storm?" He asked, bringing his hands to my cheeks, caressing it slowly.
"It's just a nightmare," I assured him, placing my hands above his own.
"A nightmare..." he whispered, looking away from me. "A nightmare!" He repeated. He shook his head, sifting back to reality as his eyes grew big to see me fully in front of him.
But he didn't say anything, just wrapped his arms around me. "Can I just..." he didn't finish his sentence, and he didn't need to as I held him in my arms.
-
I woke up the next morning with a pounding headache.
I looked over to him and saw how peaceful he looked, sleeping so soundlessly.
And then I remembered last night. All the things that happened. Liam's arms around me. His silent cries as he gripped me harder like I was going to disappear if he let me go.
I few strands of his hair stuck to his face, and my hands moved on their own.
I couldn't believe I slept here. And right next to him at that. I didn't know what to feel about any of this, and I didn't know if I should be ashamed of myself.
But last night, when he screamed, I couldn't think of a better place to be than right next to him.
I couldn't imagine what he was going through. I didn't even know if he went through that every night.
I touched his skin, moving the hair out of his face when he suddenly caught my arm.
He opened his eyes, alarmed to see me and twisted my arm down and hovered on top of me.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" He questioned.
"You don't remember anything from last night?"
He looked at me, confused but immediately scrunched his eyebrows. The incidents of all night coming back to him.
"You shouldn't be here," he said softly and got off me, standing in the middle of his room.
I got off his bed.
"Ya, I'm sorry," I said, trying to straighten up my shirt and get out of there.
As I tried making my way out, he grabbed my arm, pulling me toward him, my chest hitting his.
"Nothing, and I mean nothing that happened last night; you tell a soul. Because if you do, I will make you suffer," he hissed.
"I know Liam; I won't tell anyone. You can trust me," I assured him. "It's not like you don't make me suffer enough already," I say but regretted it as soon as it left my mouth.
I saw the flicker of guilt in his eyes, but he masked it right away, shoving me off him.
"Get the hell out!" He yelled. And I did.
-
I sighed loudly as I massaged my temples.
"You know this detention thing is starting to get to me," Sky said.
I was having the most challenging time listening to everything anyone was saying. My head throbbed as my headache has gotten worse.
"Really? I thought you might enjoy it," Nathan says, rolling his eyes at his sister.
Sarah, beside me, giggled.
"Are you alright, Storm?" Sarah asked.
"Ya, sorry, I just have a headache," I told her.
She gave me a puzzled looked and turned over to her back and took out two aspirin she kept in her bag.
"Here, this should help," she handed it to me.
I gladly took it from her thanking her, and placed them in my mouth, flushing it down with the leftover apple juice I had.
"Did you not sleep well last night?" She asked.
"No, I..." I trailed off. "How are you, Sarah? I meant to call you last night, but I um forgot," I said, quickly changing the subject. "Luke didn't hurt you, did he?"
"No, no, he didn't touch me," she assured me. She looked around us, lowering herself. "Something happened between us," she whispered.
"What?" I questioned.
"I- well, it was sudden, and I wasn't sure how it happened, but he kissed me, " she said; my eyes went wide, not expecting her to say that at all. "And I kissed him back," she finished, sounding as surprised as I felt.
"Wait? What's going on between you two?" I asked her.
"I... I don't know," she muttered.
I looked over at Nathan, who was clueless in all of this and how crushed he would feel if he found out.
"Do you like him?" I asked her.
"I don't know. With him, I'm always confused. At times he makes me feel like I can conquer anything, but then the next seconds, he hurts me as nothing else could ever," she says, her eyes lifted to look at something behind me. I take a glance to see she was staring at Luke, who was looking right back at her. "He's so complicated," she said.
"They all are," I told her, my eyes finding Liam's.
"What you guys looking at?" Sky asked, snapping both Sarah and me back to reality.
"It's nothing," I said. She shrugged her shoulder. "You guys are coming to my play tonight, right?" She asked.
"Of course. We wouldn't miss it," I told her, and Sarah nodded.
"Good, you better not,"
"Well, I'm busy," Nathan said. The sky looked at him, giving the dead eyes. "I will murder you in your sleep," she said, without blinking.
Nathan gulped. Actually gulped.
"Fine, I'll go, but only because I want too, and not because I'm scared of you,"
"Ya right," Sky snickered.
"Dad can't come cuz they have worked so, if you don't come, who will tell them how amazingly talented their daughter is," she said, flipping her hair to the sides.
Nathan rolled her eyes.
"Do you guys want to go together?" Nathan asked.
"Ya, why not," I said, looking over at Sarah, who merely just smiled.
-
I was excited about the play.
We all had been looking forward to it because our theatre group was a talented bunch, and with Skyler part of the cast, it was going to be extra amazing.
Sarah, Nathan, and I arrived earlier than everyone, grabbing a seat right in the front to cheer Sky on.
Soon after, the auditorium filled with parents and students and staff, and the play began.
They were performing the classic play Hamlet with Skyler playing Ophelia. But they had turned into a musical.
We watched as she played her character and sang amazingly.
"Booo," someone from the crowd yelled.
We all turned our heads to see who that would've done but was having a hard time seeing in the dark.
Skyler ignored the sounds and continued singing.
"Booo get off the stage," someone continued to yell, and this time I knew exactly who it was. Isaac.
He was sitting with his legs up on the seats with many of his shares of followers but with neither Liam nor Luke with him.
"You suck," he continued to yell, and all of his followers yelling with him.
I looked at Sky, who fumed in anger but trying so hard to stay in character.
Many of the people around us are looking over at him, confused.
"Shut up!" He screamed once again, but this time he had something in his hand.
A tomato.
He threw it right up on the stage crushing right on Sky's stomach. She looked at him, horrified and stopped singing.
He smirked up at her and began throwing many more. The tomato's filled the stage Skyler covered all over.
"You fucking asshole!" Nathan yelled, rushing out of his seat and punched Isaac right in the face.
But he didn't stop with one; he continued. He was throwing punches after punches until the teacher pulled them off each other.
Sarah and I rushed up on stage to a still horrified Skyler, who stood there unable to move.
We helped her to the back and right into their changing room.
Skylar looked terrified and shaking.
Her eyes, turning red in anger.
"Sky?" Sarah called.
"I'm going to kill him," she said, turning on her heel and rushed out and into the hall where Isaac was standing with cracked lips and a few cuts.
Nathan on the other side with bruised cheeks and a bloodied nose.
Sarah ran to him, helping him.
I rushed behind Sky to stop her, but she was already in front of him.
He smirked at her like he didn't do anything wrong.
And she raised her hand and slapped him right across the cheeks. "You ruined everything!" She screamed at him.
"This was so important to me, and you destroyed it," she said again, punching his chest.
I went up to her trying to pull away, but she ignored me, punching his chest over and over.
He abruptly grabbed her arm, pulling him toward his chest.
"You deserved that for everything you did," he said, pushing her hard, causing her to stumble back. "And by the way up on that stage, the tomatoes were better than your awful singing," he stated before walking away.
I ran to Skyler's side, who looked at him, walking away as she fought back her tears.
"I hate him," was all she said before leaving out the door.
