Appearance- 10%
Description- 5%
Visuals- 5%

This is the least important category for all intents and purposes. If I think your story is good but suffered in this category, I'll add on here.

Is your description interesting? Does it make me want to read your book? Is your cover appealing? Is it well made? Did you put in the effort to put in banners (I don't actually judge on this, lol)?

Mechanics- 20%
Grammar- 10%
Writing Style- 10%

While good grammar is not always indicative of a good story, it certainly plays a part. However, you can often recognize a good story by things the author includes as part of their writing style such as themes or that word I dread every time I hear it in an English class: motifs.

Does it look like you bothered to run your story through a spelling/grammar checker? Is your sentence structure understandable? Do I find myself needing to reread to understand what I just read? Can I see a clear writing style? Is there a message I can understand behind the writing?

Characters-20% *(see bottom of page)
Character Growth/Development- 10%
Character Realism- 10%

I am one of those people that consider characters more important than plot. There's a reason I can love some "Slice of Life" shows like Konosuba or Miss Kobyashi's Dragon Maid and it's because I love characters more than plot. However, I understand that this isn't the case for most people which is why plot does have a higher weighted grade (see the footnote for the exception).

Also, probably important to mention that Character Realism is where that new hip word "diversity" comes in to play. I'll be honest, in most cases, I don't really care at all if you include diversity or not which I'm allowed to say as a bisexual half Asian-half white female. However, there is a reason why I call this realism.

If you write an Alola fic where the entirety of the main cast is white, you're asking for it. As someone who lived there for two years, I am very well aware of the ethnic makeup of the state of Hawaii.

Character Realism also includes if your characters are believable. Sure, you might have a fantasy setting where the main character is a wizard and professional assassin, but I still expect them to function like a human being would in their circumstance.

Do I feel like all the characters play an important role in the story? Can I find at least one character I love? Do your characters change appropriately for the story and the events they experience? Can I at least imagine this character being a real person for a minute?

Plot- 25% *(see bottom of page)
Beginning- 5%
Middle- 10%
Ending- 10%

Depending on the book, these will belong to different numbers of chapters. In a forty-chapter book, I consider the first 3-5 chapters as my basis for judging the beginning. The middle makes up the rest of the story until the end. I roughly define the ending of a story as the last arc of the story.

Did your story interest me from the beginning (first five chapters)? Did you keep me interested? Was the ending good or at least impactful? Is your story well thought-out? Do I feel like your story was executed well?

Originality- 10%

This is the most self-explanatory category here. This is also where I might subtract points for suspected plagiarism of certain scenes.

Emotional Impact/Enjoyment- 15%
Emotional Impact- 10%
Enjoyment- 5%

I put these two categories hand in hand because they're both rather subjective. The emotional impact is only dipping its foot into subjectivity, but it was enough for me to place it with my own personal enjoyment.

Do I come away from your story feeling like I'll remember it for a good while? Will your book be something I recommend in the genre? Did my cold unfeeling heart move a little at any point?

And, at last, my final metric that doesn't really matter is, "Would I pick it up in the library?"

This is rather straightforward and is just there for me to add any other thoughts for my conclusion.

*In a romance story I will change the rubric for plot and characters.

It'll become as follows:

Characters- 25%
Character Development- 15%
Character Realism- 10%

Plot- 20%
Beginning- 5%
Middle- 10%
Ending- 5%

If you've come to the conclusion you aren't quite a fan of my rules or scoring system, the following people and accounts are excellent reviewers.

I won't tag then because I honestly don't know some of these people that well...
