chapter sixteen

It was a Wednesday night. I was off from work and had little to no homework. My dad came back home in 2 weeks and the time just seemed to be dragging on since I was all by myself.

I tried calling Ashton and Calum, who were actually busy doing "guy stuff", which was them just hiding out in Calum's basement playing hours of video games.

I wanted to call Luke and see what he was up to, but he had beat me to it. His name lit up my phone and I picked it up right away.

"Hey," I shortly said. I sat up on my bed and fixed my shirt just it was twisted from when I was laying on my stomach.

"Hey, how are you?" He sweetly asked, a door closing behind him on the other line.

"I'm fine. I was actually just about to call you and see what you were doing because I have nothing to do right now." I replied, looking around my dim room.

"Really? Well in that case, please come over. I was about to ask you anyways because my parents are home and wanted to sit down and have dinner. I want you to come." I furrowed my eyebrows at is response. We had become good friends, or whatever we are, just in the past few weeks so him dropping this on me was a bit weird.

"Wait, you want me to have dinner with you and your parents?" I asked, thinking this was a thing only people in relationships do. And me and Luke were in anything but that.

He paused, "I don't see why not. You're my friend and you have nothing better to do." He lingered on the word friend a little, it was really obvious that he thought about me being half naked on his couch that one time.

"Um, okay." I cleared my throat in attempt to clear the slight tension. "What time do you want me over?" I asked.

"Can you make it here by 7?"

I nodded, getting up from my bed. "Yeah," I quickly said.

"Thanks, Andy. See you then." I could tell he said this with a smile on his face, as he does with just about everything he says. It was contagious and I found myself smiling as well.

"Bye." I hung up the phone once I heard him repeat the word back and I found myself standing in the middle of my room in silence.

I had just accepted to having dinner with Luke and his parents and this was probably going to end very horribly. I was always awkward in these situations, but for some reason I accepted just so I could see him.

I looked down at my clothes, the same baggy t-shirt and shorts I've had on since I got home from school. My hair was still down and my makeup somewhat still on. My wall clock told me I only had 20 minutes so clean myself up before I left so I figured it'd be best to run right into my bathroom.

As I was getting ready I was pausing every so often to text Luke back. He was good at giving me whiplash from how quickly he could turn our conversations around. He liked to keep it interesting.

While I was changing into my only pair of jeans without holes or tears in them, I began to wonder if his parents were the judgmental type. They did own a huge house and did God knows what as a living, I'm sure I've been told before but have forgotten. This made me analyze everything about me from my hair to my nails to my clothes. Sure, I could somehow get them to believe I have this perfect personality, but I really wanted to make a good impression.

As I was taking out the many earrings lining my ear, I realized I had nothing to lose. I wasn't dating Luke, his parents basically had no idea who I was, so their opinion didn't exactly matter.

I sighed, leaving in a single pair of gold earrings my dad got me when I was younger. I reached to my phone, unlocking it a checking the time. I had 15 minutes to get to Luke's house so I had just about 5 minutes to waste.

I smoothed down the basic blouse that flowed off my body. It laid neatly on my tight jeans that tucked into a pair of worn boots. I grabbed a coat from the back of my chair since it was spring and the rain seemed to never stop.

My keys were no where in sight which confused me, but after a few minutes of searching in the most common places they had been in the pocket of my coat the whole time. With my phone in my hand I headed outside, shutting and locking my front door behind me.

On the drive over I was quiet, not my usual loud self in the car because I have 5 CDs of my favorite artists in my car with me at all times ready on repeat. I listened to the rain on the roof of my car and on the windshield and paid attention to every light coming at me from the other side of the road.

I turned onto Luke's road, pulling up to his gate and letting myself in. I adored how cut off his house was, it wasn't exactly secluded, but was still pretty private.

I sent Luke my basic 'I'm here' text, but when I looked up he was already jogging through the heavy rain to come meet me at my car.

"As nice as it is to see you, I really don't like being rained on so if you don't hurry I'm ditching you." He told me, his voice louder than normal from the rain drowning his voice out.

We both scrambled away from my car, giggling as we jogged up his front steps and to his front door. He pushed it open with ease, brushing a few pieces of hair off of his forehead.

This is one of those moments where you're sort of blown away with the way someone looks. On an everyday bases, you know they're attractive, but then there's just this one instance where you look at the curve of their nose or the nearly invisible freckles painted along their cheeks and the washed out color of their lips. It was weird to feel like this about Luke, especially since it seemed he had little to no emotions and he was a much more physical person. It just made me wonder if he's done the same.

"Andy, right?" A light voice called out. I looked up, seeing a blonde woman walking towards me with her right hand in front of her.

"Yes," I answered right away, forcing a smile on my face. I was really trying to force the awkward out, but it wasn't really going anywhere.

Luke glanced between me and his parents as we all introduced ourselves. A natural smile pulled at his lips. It was genuine and kind, but it had disappeared when he looked back at me.

He said nothing, he just nodded over towards the kitchen and sat right down at the granite bar. He pulled out the stool next to him and I sat down, realizing we were the only ones in the kitchen. His parents were a room over sitting in the living room where just a few days ago Luke and I were "studying".

"You want anything?" He smoothly asked, his eyes scanning the features of my face.

I shook my head although I could use really anything to drink right now. I still felt pretty nervous and I just needed to do something besides sit and getting my hands around a cup or a soda can could help.

"I'm getting you a drink anyways. What do you want?" He looked over at me as he got up and took the few steps to his fridge. I shrugged, not really caring. A coke came sliding my way, stopping short but just in my reach,

"Thanks." I sighed. I pulled on the top to open it, that being the only sound in the room. I took a sip and glanced over to Luke who was watching me. I set down my drink and raised an eyebrow at him, "What?"

"You are really pretty." Luke said, his smile turning timid. It was almost as if he was debating whether or not he should've said that.

I covered my face with my hands as my cheeks flushed. No matter how many times I received a compliment I had the same reaction. A laugh, almost a giggle, had poured from his lips. The sound was like listening to your favorite song.

He pried at my hands, trying to get them from covering my face that he apparently thought was pretty. Luke was successful, as he was with almost anything he did with me.

"Thank you." A short laughed came out as I thanked him. "I'm glad you think so." I added, which I soon realized sounded pretty dumb. But then again, we don't have much boundaries around each other to start with. I was a little too comfortable around him for only know him for a short while.

We both turned around as his parents came back into the room. They were still carrying on their conversation which sounded like something from work. I still had no idea what exactly they did. Whatever they were doing is what I need to get started on.

Luke's dad, who was rather intimidating, told us we could eat whenever we wanted since everything was ready. His mom already had a plate of food, as she was the one who prepared it and had gone to do so right when she walked into the room.

She sat right by Luke, smiling at me then back to her husband.

It all really went from there, we ate at the bar instead of the table. It was casual and calm, much of what I wasn't expecting. Luke's really talkative around his parents which I adore. It isn't a situation where his parents are gone and he doesn't have a connection with them. He knows to keep up with them.

We had eaten relatively fast, making our conversations jump around and sort of short. They got the basic information out of me, if I was ready for summer, what I was planning on doing senior year, if I had any siblings, that sort of stuff. His parents were sweet to me, but it wasn't fake or unbearable.

I got up with Luke to take my dishes to the plate after he bugged me for a little while because he wanted to take my plate but I reminded him I'm a big girl. I set the thick white plate down in the sink, careful not to clink it against anything.

"Hey, we're going to go get some coffee." Luke told his parents, wiping his hands off on the wash cloth next to him. He said nothing about coffee so I'm wondering what he's planning on doing here.

His parents nodded, pretty much just waving it off. They had a lot of trust in him wish made me suspect that he's never been caught. Whether it was partying or smoking, there was a lot of trust Luke had received from his parents. I liked it.

I exchanged the whole 'it was so nice to meet you' type of conversation that everyone has had before. While it was true, it was just not exactly necessary to me I guess. We were told to stay safe and to be home by a reasonable hour since I would still need to come back here and get my car to go home since Luke was planning on driving us both.

I waved goodbye to them as Luke shut the door behind us. He stretched out his arm as he pressed the button to unlock his car.

"So when did we decide we were getting coffee?" I asked, following him down the steps.

Luke bumped my shoulder, "I just wanted to be alone with you."

I smiled to myself, enjoying the time right now. Even though we were just getting into a car I still liked the time with him.

We drove for about 20 minutes. The closest coffee shop was maybe 5 minutes away. I didn't question him, I never did. Because his ideas were usually better than mine since he's just a bit more fun than me. I'm just the sensible one here.

Luke pulled onto a gravel road. I haven't been down this part of town very often, but I have recently. This road leads to a rope swing and rocks that you can jump off of into a part of the lake. I went there for the first time over spring break and I'm wondering why I'm down here again.

He pulls up into the empty "parking lot" which was just a ton of gravel right by the rope swing. Obviously, no one was here and it was already dark out side and he turned his car off when he parked so now it was practically pitch black.

I looked around, my eyes adjusting to the light. "What are we doing?" I asked, taking off my seat belt as he was too.

He shifted in his seat, turning to face me to where he could see me just a little better. He shrugged, "Getting coffee."

After the words left his mouth I found his hand placed lightly on my cheek and his lips on mine.
