chapter four

"Luke, can we stop at your house?" Michael asked from over the loud music that matched my own music taste.

"Why?" Luke peered at Michael through the rear view mirror as I leaned over to turn the volume down.

"This shirt is itchy as hell." He told him, getting Luke to roll his eyes. I lightly placed my hand over my mouth to hide my soft laugh from how childish they both were.

"No." Luke scoffed.

"Come on, your house is right down the street."

I watched between the two as they continued to bicker about going to Luke's house. Since I had no reason to go, yet no reason not to, I stayed out of it. I looked back to the road to see familiar street and realized that the entrance to my neighborhood was coming up to the right.

"Hey, I live in there." I spoke, pointing my finger to the stone sign and gates that were there for literally no reason.

They stopped fighting for a moment, looking to the passing entrance then focusing back to their dumb conversation. The car suddenly swerved to the right and immediately I thought we were going to crash, but instead, Luke had raised his voice at Michael.

"You almost made me miss the turn, asshole." He glanced over his shoulder before getting fully into the turn lane and quickly turning into the gated road.

"Are you okay?" Michael questioned, raising an eyebrow at me.

"We almost just died, but for the most part, yeah." I laughed as I turned to face him. He gave me a faint smile before Luke had broken our gazes.

"Can you open the gates?" He asked, leaning out his car window as he pressed a button on the speaker. I couldn't make out what the person talking back to him was saying, but they didn't sound too pleased. "Whatever, I'll just be in and out. It's no big deal." He sighed, sitting back in his seat and gripping onto the steering wheel as the black fence started opening.

He drove off once they were open and we soon pulled up to a large estate. My jaw dropped slightly as he parked out front, both of them getting out before me. I reached to open my door, but Luke had beat me to it, holding it open for me as I climbed out.

"Do you seriously live here?" I asked, hoping that I wasn't coming off as too rude. Luke nodded his head a few times and kept his hands in his pockets as we climbed the front steps. "It's so cool." I said, looking around at the vast amount of land before stepping inside.

The inside seemed to be smaller than I pictured it, but it was probably because of the large amount of furniture and pictures throughout the house that took up the space. Michael winded his way through the home as he obviously knew his way around. Luke and I followed as I admired the beautiful home, eventually having to climb the spiral staircase which I guess led to his room.

"My parents and brothers are all some type of physicians, they work for the highest paying medical company." Luke said randomly. "In case you were wondering why I have a big house and still go to a normal public school." He explained, which I nodded my head at. He rubbed the back of his neck with his hand. "I hope that didn't come off as too douchey."

"It didn't." I faintly laughed, glancing over at him once then back to Michael who was scurrying down the hallway and into a room. Luke stopped in his tracks, grabbing onto my arm so we wouldn't keep walking.

I didn't ask why, but I figured it was because it would be kind of weird of me to go into his room, especially with Michael changing clothes. We sat patiently outside and talked mostly about school, seeing that so far it was really the only thing we had in common. Luke had definitely given off a more bad ass vibe than I did which is why I felt so drawn to him. I knew it would be nothing but trouble if I got involved with him, but for some reason that was appealing.

My thought was broken by Michael coming out of his room and standing in to doorway, swinging a red bra around on his finger.

"Hey, is this Katherine's?" He smirked, now clutched one of the straps in his hand. I felt my face warm up slightly from the awkward tension between all three of us, except for Michael who apparently had no boundaries.

"Shut up." Luke grumbled, walking over to Michael and snatching the bra from his hands, throwing it into his room and shutting his door. "Kat and I broke up for a reason so please don't bring her up." His tone was annoyed and Michael simply brushed it off, walking towards me with a smile.

"Kat's a bitch." He whispered.

"You don't need to whisper, Clifford. I know she's a bitch." Luke replied, getting both of us to laugh, but at the same time it only made me wonder what had happened between Luke and Kat. I felt it would be too personal to ask Luke, so I let my curiosity wonder and suggested she was actually just a plain bitch and that Luke broke up with her.

Michael and I immediately clicked, making an instant start to our friendship. As for Luke and I, there was just some tension since I had seen more of his bad side than good. But in the end, it was something that could easily be fixed and I knew that from the second I skipped class with them, I'd be stuck with these two kids for the rest of the year and probably longer.

"School ends in an a little over an hour. Is it even worth it to go back?" Michael asked as we went back down the stairs. Luke and I looked between each other then back at Michael.

"Probably not." I spoke, glancing back to Luke who was toying with the ring in his lip that I'm pretty sure violated the school's dress code.

"I have a forensics test I have to take." Luke told him, running his hands through his hair and he fixed it in a mirror handing on the wall next to him.

Michael rolled his eyes, "It's always the smart kid who messes the fun up." I forced back a smile from his statement as Luke looked beyond annoyed.

"I'm not even that smart, I'm just good at memorization." He sighed, searching for his car keys on the multiple tables around one of the living rooms we were in. Michael and Luke went back and forth as they were back in the car, going on about a pointless subject as I zoned out.

Michael had let his walls down very easily and with his reputation, it was very surprising to me. I had expected him to be tough and witty say things that Chuck Bass would say, when in reality he was just normal. Sure he got in a little trouble, but he reminded me of myself in a way. I'm not really intimidating and bad ass, I just have the vibe that I am. As for Luke, he had the first impressions and reputations that seemed to match his personality. But I kept thinking back to our day in ISS and how different it had been when it was just me and him.

Eventually after Michael and Luke stopped fighting, we decided to head back to school with an hour left of class. Luckily for Luke he wouldn't miss his test while Michael and I groaned on about having to spend it in study hall doing nothing. Luke had stopped our annoying complaining by taking us to a drive-thru and ordering milkshakes, but Michael still managed to throw in a complaint or two as Luke sped back towards school.

We pulled into the parking lot, getting back to Luke's spot and getting out of the car.

"Alright," Luke started. "Since we definitely did not just skip school together, we're going to go through-"

"Different doors so it looks like we weren't together." Michael finished his sentence for him, receiving a glare from Luke. "You give the same speech every time." He pushed Luke's shoulder and he swatted his hand away.

"Are you saying that you've managed to get other girl's to skip school with you guys?" I fake gasped, managing to get a laugh out of both of them.

"Ah, no." Luke awkwardly coughed as he started walking towards the building. "You're the first." His hands found their way to his front pockets, something I noticed he did often.

"I'll go through the main entrance and Andy can go through the side." Michael told us as he pointed to the opposite buildings.

"My room for study hall is in the back." I said, thinking it would be a better idea if I actually got to my class on time.

"Then go through the back and Luke can go through the side." He shrugged.

"My class is also in the back." Luke added in, seeming annoyed by the situation.

Michael narrowed his eyes between me and Luke and brought a finger to his lips before dropping it seconds after.

Michael gave us a wink,"Don't get caught." He turned his back to us, leaving us in the middle of the parking lot which looked rather suspicious.

Luke took a sip of the milkshake he still had in his hand, beginning to walk towards the back of the building. He nodded at me to follow and I looked around, weaving through a shortcut in campus with him.

"So Andy Emerson," Luke began. I gave him an odd look since he had used my full name. "How many times have you skipped class before?" He asked.

"A few." I quickly answered, kicking a few rocks on the gravel shortcut. The perks of having an outside campus.

"Which means a lot." He chuckled, taking another sip from his straw.

"It's never for anything bad, though. Like it'll be because I forgot I had an essay due and I'll just walk to the corner gas station for the hour." I explained.

"Me too." He laughed. I turned my head to him in surprise.

"Really?" I raised an eyebrow at him as he nodded his head.

We reached the back of our school and Luke yanked open the door as the ones in the back were older and heavier. I walked through first, stopping as I waited for him to catch up. He came up to my side, his hand lightly brushing against my lower back to get me to walk again.

I flinched from the contact and I glanced over at him to see if he had noticed, which to my luck, he still stared straight ahead with his crooked small smile he always wore. He either didn't notice or didn't care.

His hand fell seconds after we were winding through the halls and blending in with the few students rushing to get to their classes even though there was 4 minutes to spare.

I stopped in front of my classroom I was supposed to be in, "Thanks for the milkshake and half ass tour of the town." I said, getting a full smile to spread across his face.

"Anytime, Andy Emerson." He leaned on the wall, propping his lean body up next to me.

"Why do you use my full name?" I questioned.

His eye caught the ground, "I like your name."

I nodded slowly as he looked back at me, tugging on the hoop in his lip.

"My friends call me Ands." I informed him as I fidgeted with the end of my shirt.

"Can I call you Ands?" He asked, taking a hand and shaking it through his hair even though it did practically nothing.

"Are you my friend?" I answered with a half smile, crossing my arms over my chest as he stood up right.

He looked me up and down, which I guessed he was judging me or not so subtly checking me out.

"I'll see you around, Andy Emerson." He smirked, turning his back to me before heading off to his class without another word slipping from his mouth.

"Huh." I huffed out, biting down on the inside of my lip. I shook my head yet kept my same faint smile.

I walked into study hall and made my way to the back like I always did, my good mood changing into an irritated one as the group of boys next to me went on about their "interesting" spring break they had and plans for summer.

I rolled my eyes as the final bell rang, putting in one of my headphones. I was just about to put in the other one when I heard my name being called from the front of the class.

"Andy?" My teacher's voice caused everyone in the room to dart their eyes to me, an instant nervous feeling washing over me.

"They need you in the front office." She gave me a thin smile as I made my way to the front of the room, getting a pass from her an exiting the class.

I sighed as I walked out, pulling all of my hair over my right shoulder. Just as I looked up from the ground, I caught glances with Luke in the hallway and immediately felt my stomach drop from the realization that we got caught skipping.

"Shit." We both said together, groaning as we made our way straight to the office.
