Chapter 10

The day passed without any major upheavals. However, towards the afternoon Shelly let out an annoyed sigh.

"You ok ?"

"Yeah, it's just... It's frustratin' not being able to go out…"

"Oh... I see... Well I guess you will be able to go out in the backyard in a few hours. It's Bonnie's first appearance on TV tonight, she's going to do a duet with Janet. This is gonna be epic !"

"I don't see how that allows me to go out ?"

"Everyone will be either in the stunt arena or in front of their TV, soooooooo-…"

"So...Oh ! Everyone will be too busy to notice me ! This is excellent news !"

Colt couldn't help but smile. Shelly had the face of a 5-year-old in front of Santa.
Plus the redhead had to admit, she was adorable when she smiled. She was magnificent.

This is how the bandit, stomping up and down, was impatiently waiting the start of the show, under the amused gaze of Colt who had turned on the TV to find out when he could release the caged beast.

"Shelly, that's it ! Lola started the presentation of the sho-"

He didn't even have time to finish when he heard the kitchen door slam.

'Pff, she definitely NEEDED to go out.' He thought. 'She is like a wild animal that can't be contained in a cage... a powerful beast that could rekt me and yet, we kinda had tamed each other. In a way it is...Yeah… Wait no-'

"What was I even going to think about" Colt whispered, increasing the volume, blushing.

Shelly breathed in the fresh evening air, finally a semblance of freedom…
Why hadn't she left already ? It was a mystery. It seemed like she grew attached to Colt.
No, of course not ! He's a cop, she's a bandit. Tomorrow she will say goodbye to him, that's it.
She leaned against the wall while closing her eyes.

The two roommates were convinced they were safe.

However, they were both wrong. From the top of one neighboring house, a shadow smiled. They finally had confirmation of their words. The shadow pulled a cell phone out of their pocket and took a picture.

"Shit, the flash !"

The dark figure went to hide in the darkness because the bandit had raised her head, warned by the light.

Silence.

After a few seconds of scanning the sky, Shelly shrugged, thinking she had seen a shooting star.

The shadow sighed in relief, it would be a shame if the bandit noticed something.

The unlikely duo ended their evening quietly, without suspecting that the next day everything would change.

Next morning, when Colt woke up, Shelly had already made breakfast.
They both sat down around bread, butter, jam, a fruit salad and two mugs of coffee.

"Hello Shelly" said Colt yawning

"...Hi pretty face…"

Her tone was dull.

"...Is something wrong ?"

"On the contrary... I think I'm completely recovered... So it's likely that... Well, by the end of the day I'll probably be gone."

"Oh…"

"Eh... yeah... You won't have me on your back anymore, cariño !"

"Ha… yeah…"

The two remained silent. A sort of embarrassment and disappointment was filling the air. Was it due to their separation... ? Nah, that was stupid... Right ? They had been forced to stay with each other... So why this feeling of emptiness all of a sudden...?

"It's... cool... I... Yeah... I'm going to leave... And be back by noon... Well, not that you're interested ? Maybe you won't even be here anymore, huh ?"

"Yes that's about it…"

Breakfast ended in a gloomy atmosphere. Colt would go back to his routine and Shelly would go back to chasing treasure and escaping the law...

On the doorstep, the policeman looked at Shelly one last time.

"Well... It was quite an experience…"

"Yeah... Goodbye then ?"

"Or rather like a farwell... Well, unless we catch you in another robbery haha... ha…"

There was another awkward silence to the cop's attempt at humor. Shelley shook her head.

"Go. Go away. You are going to be late…"

They stared at each other one last time, then the redhead closed the door. Shelly heard the sound of the Vespa's engine, she heard it leave the small house and then the noise faded away further down the street.

The bandit sighed and went to sit down in Colt's favorite armchair.
Kit came to rub against her legs, seeming to know that she was going to leave. The Hispanic woman sighed and undid her ponytail, running her fingers through her hair.

"Say... What's going to stop me from staying ? At least for a quick laundry and a last shower ? God knows when is the next time I will be able to do it !"

And the outlaw stood up with a smile on her face. Who knows maybe if she takes her time she might be able to see Colt one last time ?
