Chapter 4
Today was my first day back to work after two months.
The hospital understood my situation with my accident, and they gave me a pretty big break to take.
But I was finally ready to go back to work.
"You know I missed you," Nathan said.
"Nate, you've been seeing me almost every day," I giggled.
"Ya, but I mean at work. It's not the same without you here," he said.
I smiled at him. "I'm glad to be back actually," I looked around. "I missed everyone here as well."
"They missed you as well. Especially Iris. She wouldn't stop asking for you," he said.
Iris. Jace's grandma.
Or maybe she wasn't. I didn't know, really. I haven't seen Jace at the hospital since I ran away.
He hadn't come to visit her, nor did anyone come.
"Did anyone come to visit her these couple of months?" I asked, wondering maybe he had come when I was away.
But Nathan mentioned that no one did.
Jace did lie about her.
He had to. He would visit Iris on the daily before and to have him complete abandon her now seemed unusual.
But I didn't dwell on it longer. I didn't like thinking about Jace and I was glad he hadn't come back.
"Hello, my coworkers!" Skyler shouted as she came up to the front.
"We're not your coworkers until you get the job, Sky," Nathan rolled his eyes.
"Which I know she's going to," I said.
"Ya ya," Nathan mocked. She stuck her tongue out at him.
"Anyways, when is your interview?" I asked her.
She looked at her watch. "It should be soon, " she said.
"You're going to be great!" I assured her.
"What's that on your neck, Sky?" Nathan asked, squinting his eyes looking down at her neck.
I looked at her to find a purple bruise forming on her neck. "Is that a hickey?" I questioned.
She quickly took her phone out and flipped her camera on her phone, and stared at her neck.
Her face turned red not from embarrassment but anger. She looked furious as if she was ready to throw hands. "That fucking no good piece of garbage!" she yelled loudly. I looked around to see if anyone might have heard her, but we were the only ones here, thankfully.
"What's wrong?" I asked her.
She put her phone away. "I'm going to kill him," she said.
"Who?" Nathan asked, his own face filling with rage. The protective older brother is coming out.
"That motherfucker-"
"Excuse me, Sky?" She was interrupted by a nurse named Lily.
"Yes?" she turned to meet her. She tried to control her anger.
"Are you here for the interview?" She asked her with a smile. Sky nodded her head. "Perfect. You can just follow me," she said, walking away. Sky looked at us with her finger crossed, and I gave her a thumbs-up before she followed behind Lily.
-
I was exhausted from the long day at work.
I wanted nothing more than just to go home. My mom had let me borrow her car and went to work with my dad. I was glad since I didn't have to ask for a ride to anyone.
I got inside her car and drove home.
I knew I would be home alone like always since my parents were working again.
I pulled inside my driveway and got out of the car. I noticed that someone was sitting on my front porch step, and I almost jumped. But took a look closer to find Cassian sitting there.
I was confused as to why he was here, especially at this time.
"Cas?"
He got up from the steps and walked to stand in front of me.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him.
He hesitated before opening his mouth. "I wanted to talk to you,"
"About what?" I asked him.
"About last night,"
I had remembered that he had left without saying anything. "Ya, why did you leave without saying anything?" I questioned him.
"That's what I want to talk about," he said. And I stood quietly, waiting for him to continue.
"Maybe it will be better if I showed you," he finally said and placed his lips on to mine.
My eyes widened, and I stumbled back a bit.
He cupped my cheeks, and I was too shocked to do anything.
Cassian was kissing me.
I felt like I was waiting for the butterflies to erupt inside me and my toes to curl underneath me.
But I felt nothing. I expected to feel something. Yet it was blank.
I placed a hand on Cassian's chest and pushed him away, and took a step back.
"You can't do this, Cas," I told him.
He looked surprised. "Why?" He asked.
I looked down at the ground.
I didn't know what to say. I really didn't.
I didn't want to hurt him because that's the last thing I want to do to him.
"I felt it, " he paused. I lifted my eyes to meet his. "You touched me, and it took everything in me not to pull you down on that couch and kiss you," he said.
I hadn't even thought about that. Had he been awake?
"So why? Why can't I do this?"
I opened my mouth to tell him that I hadn't meant anything by that touch. That he was a good friend, but I never had the chance to say anything.
"Because she likes me," I turned my head to see Liam walking towards us.
His hair was messy, and he had a few bruises on his knuckles.
He came to stand next to me, facing Cassian.
Cassian and Liam were always civil. From what I have seen, they have always been good to each other. They even had each other backs at times. But right now, both their icy stares towards each other made my own chills go up.
"I think you knew that too," he said with a cocky smirk.
"I don't think that's the truth," Cas said, crossing his arm. "Is it Storm?" He directed his attention towards me.
I shuddered, not knowing what to say.
"Shouldn't it be obvious? She has always liked me," he looked at me. His eyes darkened.
I could feel myself tense.
"No... that's not true," I said, finding my voice. I knew I was lying. I was lying through my teeth.
But having him say it as if he holds all the power against me makes my feelings a joke.
"Storm, let's just go inside," Cassian said, noticing my discomfort.
I took a step to move, but my hand was caught in Liam's.
"Let me go..." It came out like a whisper.
"You told me you wanted me to remember. Why don't you remind me then, " he said and dragged me away from Cassian and inside my home.
He locked the door shut and didn't let him in.
"Stop, Liam. Let him in," I said, trying to push past him to get to the door. But he stood in front of it, preventing me from getting to it. "This is not the time right now, Liam," I said.
He didn't say anything, just watched me. Eyeing me up and down. Finally, he reached up and touched the scar on my forehead.
He caressed it with his thumb, touching it lightly.
"Liam..." As if he got out of a daze, he dropped his hands. "Let him in," I said.
"He's gone," he said, walking away from the door.
I opened the door to find that Cassian was nowhere outside.
"Why would you do that? Why would you say that?" I questioned him.
"What? Was I lying when I said you liked me," he shot back.
"I d-don't l-like you," I squirmed, hanging my head low.
He laughed. "I don't believe you," he said.
"It's the truth," I lied.
He came up behind me. And right away, my stomach twisted in excitement, and everything flared.
He dragged his finger along the length of my arm.
"So if I do this. You won't feel anything?" He whispered in my ear.
I closed my eyes and shook my head.
"Really? What about this?" He wrapped an arm around my waist under my shirt.
I sucked in a breath.
I felt the warmth of his body pressed against my back as he gripped me closer. I placed a hand on his hand, holding it against me.
He moved my hair to the side and placed his mouth on my skin. My grip tightened.
He dragged his lips against my shoulder. He sucked right against it, and I let out a quiet moan.
My toes curled, and he turned me around to face him.
My eyes were still closed, and I could feel his breath fan against my skin.
I thought about all of these previous months when he would not even listen to anything I said and when he would barely let me touch him.
Without even realizing it, I missed this.
And I wanted nothing more than for him to remember everything that happened between us.
"Remember..." I whispered, opening my eyes.
He looked surprised, as if what he had been doing was all wrong.
He took a step back from me.
"Please, Liam," I said, trying to get closer to him, but he moved once again.
"Stop," he said. "This is all wrong," he muttered to himself.
"Liam, no. If you just listen-"
"Shut up!" He yelled. "I don't want to hear anything you have to say,"
"Please just listen to me," I begged.
"There is no point in listening. I don't give a shit about any of this," he paused. "Or you," he firmly said before walking away from me and out the door.
