Chapter 11
Dear diary,
Today was the first day back at school...
I walk beside my cousin into school. People turned to look at the pair of us, probably interested in the new student, Lucas. I roll my eyes as I watch girls ogle over him. I definitely wasn't used to people looking my direction. I nearly groan in irritation when a girl walks up to Lucas.
"Hi," she begins, "I haven't seen you around here, are you new?"
"Oh, yeah," he grins, "I'm here with my cousin."
He gestures to me, making me flinch. The girl glances over at me and glares before going back to Lucas. This was just what I needed, girls getting pissy at me because I hang out with my cousin.
"Oh," the girl sneers, "well how about we skip school and hang out somewhere more fun."
I fake gag when she says that, making her glare at me.
"Thank, but no," Lucas declines, "I want to get good grades in school and skipping wouldn't do me any good."
The girl just stares at him for a few moments before letting out some weird screeching sound before storming off. I was shocked, I was expecting him to agree and leave, but I guess you can't judge a book by its cover.
Lucas turns to look at me with a grin, "so, are we gonna keep going?"
"Sure, let's go get your timetable." I nod.
The both of us make small talk as you walk to the front office. We walk in and awkwardly stand around, waiting for the lady at the desk to acknowledge both of us.
"Hi, how can I help you?" the woman finally asks.
"Oh, this is my first day so I've come to collect my timetable." Lucas explains.
While this interaction occurs I distract myself on my phone. I hesitate for a moment before I click on Connor's number, deciding to message him.
'Hey, are you coming to school today?'
I wait a moment before he replies.
'Yeah.'
Even though it was just a text, I could feel how unenthusiastic he was. My lip twitches into a smile.
"Hey, are you ready to go?" Lucas asks, snapping me from my phone.
"Oh, sure."
At this point I was practically dragging myself along beside my cousin. I was not used to all of the attention. Usually I was completely invisible, but now that I was with your cousin, I was right beside him in the spot light.
"So, what class do you have up first?" I ask him.
"Oh, uh, I have algebra."
"Uh, okay, so we have different classes," I nod, "I'll show you where the classroom is."
Lucas nods and begins to follow along with me. The two of us are silent for the walk. I keep my head down as to not draw attention to myself. Once we get to the room I wave goodbye to my cousin and go to find Connor. Luckily now that my cousin was gone, I was once again invisible.
I manage to wander through the school, unnoticed. Once I reach the back of the school I smile, seeing a familiar figure sitting on the ground, back leaning against the wall. It's been about since I last saw him, but it felt like a month.
"Hey Connor." I smile, walking up to him and taking a seat beside him.
"Hey (y/n)."
We both sit in silence, Connor on his phone and me leaning on his shoulder, watching.
"I'm tired," I whine, "now that my cousin is hanging around people are going to probably notice me more."
"Welp, that's gotta suck."
"I mean, he isn't an asshole anymore, so I like him, but I still hate the attention, I'm not used to it."
"Uh-huh."
I'm pretty sure he really wasn't paying much attention, but I don't mind, I'm just happy to be able to freely rant.
Seriously, nothing had happened since I sat down, just me talking and Connor commenting every now and again. But I didn't mind, I just loved to be around him.
"So why didn't you come and visit me during the last week of suspension?" I ask him.
"I went over, but I saw a guy at your house so I left." He shrugs.
"Oh, that was just Lucas, my cousin."
"Well I didn't know that," Connor shrugs again, "I thought it was a new boyfriend or something."
"You could have texted me, and you already know I like you, so why would I have a boyfriend."
After a moment of silence I look over at Connor, I smile when I notice his red face.
"How cute." I mumble.
... and it was kind of average.
